Where is your sewing machine
Went over to new quiltilng friend's house and of course ended up in her sewing room. Noticed her sewing machine is in the middle of her sewing room. Hmmmm. Mine is against the wall, under a window. Why? Because when I'm quilting using my domestic sewing machine, it keeps the quilt from falling off the edge causing drag. She doesn't have a long arm.
So...where is your sewing machilne/table. Against a wall or in the middle of the room? |
My machine is against a wall. I pull out my portable sewing table and set up more in the middle of the room when sewing on borders and rows. I prefer to spread out when doing those .

I don’t like to be facing a wall. At all. Gives me the creeps, don’t like the idea of someone sneaking up on me. Plus I like to watch tv while I sew. Mine isn’t in the middle of the room, but it does face outwards into the room.
|
Mine is by a window also, and I like to watch the birds and bees in the crabapple tree outside. The window faces the street so I see everyone in the neighborhood coming and going, too. I've had it facing a wall before but this is my happiest spot. My sewing room is also our guest room, so I need to give it up sometimes and usually keep it [somewhat] clean just in case.
|
My sewing studio is basically a one bedroom apartment above our garage. My sewing area is the living room. My sewing "table" is about 6'x8' and butts up against a large window, but is not against the wall on the other three sides. My main straight stitch machine sits on the end near the window, looking but not facing it. So I can look out the window, but also see if someone (DH) enters the room. My LA is in the large bedroom and my stash is in the large walk in closet.
|
My sewing table sits against the window that faces the driveway/side yard with the bird feeders. The room is small and has three doors (2 under the staircase closet doors, 1 pocket door (my entrance) and two windows. Also contains a cutting table, an ironing table top with storage underneath and two chest of drawers to hold fabric. Not much room in there at all.
|
Cindi, your space is sooo organized. My 40 year old Bernina domestic machine is in the middle of the room in her original sewing cabinet. I found that locating in front of the window blocked my access to backside of machine area.
|
My sewing table is set up facing a window, but it is about 3 feet from the window. I like that I can drape over the front edge of the table when I am sewing to keep the fabric flowing. I like that I can walk around my table so that I can get the dust/fabric snips and threads off of the floor easily with a swiffer dust mop.
I like looking out the window from time to time to rest my eyes, and to watch our resident wildlife (our house is in the middle of woods) |
For borders, sashes and binding I use my small Brother machine at the end of my 4x8 cutting table. This way, the quilt is not constantly falling to the floor and causing issues while I stitch. This little Brother machine is lite weight so easy to move to the floor when not in use too. It has quite a few fancy stitches and stitches nicely which is a plus. Only thing it doesn't have is automatic needle threading. I've been spoiled with that on my big machine.
|
I waited a long time to have my own room. For the past 7 years it has been a small upstairs bedroom that overlooks green space in a subdivision. I can see birds in trees and that's about it. My machine table faces those windows and there are blinds if the few times a year the sun gets in my eyes. I don't have a real stash so fabric fading isn't a thing. I find I don't like to sew at night even though I have a lot of really good lighting. But daytime is wonderful.

My machine is on a table pushed under a window that looks out on my garden. My sitdown long arm is against a wall on two sides, but I pull it out into the middle when using it.

Bernina 215, in my front bedroom on a sturdy wooden folding table, facing the TV so I can watch Netflix while stitching APQS Lucey, in the middle of the basement dungeon room, two small windows Viking Topaz, in its' case underneath the big sewing cabinet in the dining room Pfaff Passport 2.0, taking up space in its' case on the floor in the front bedroom (needing to find a home for this one) Singer 66 crinkle finish (Godzilla), sitting on top of its' cabinet in the basement, but it does work Viking 905 surger, sitting on the floor underneath the dining library table And a Viking Mega quilter and a Gem Gold, currently visiting relatives |
Cindi - I love the little "trash hole" in your sewing table. What a great idea!

Cindi, like your set-up

I have my Topaz 30 against a short wall overlooking the stairs going to the garage, and when I use it for embroidery, I move it to a larger table next to it, against another section of the same wall, where my desktop computer currently lives, until my new desk is hauled up from the basement.
My Epic is on a farm table in the middle of the room, where my chair backs to the wall between 2 dormers. I have an old student size desk, where my computer used to live, set in an L-shaped position on my left, where I iron, among other strings! If I had it my way though, it wouldn't be a sloped roof over me. I would reclaim the space between the dormers as additional floor space and turn my table against the wall. As it is, I can't flip it, because there's an access door to a small, unused storage space behind my chair, and my husband is weird about covering it up. 😂 |

Mine sit on a desk my husband built into the closet.

When not in use my machines are stored on our three season porch in their carriers. When in use, they are on my dining room table. Unfortunately, I have no workable/dedicated sewing room space, so when I'm sewing I take over the dining room. That's usually 90% of the time. They are currently put away until after New Years.
|
It depends on which machine we're talking about lol. Most of my machines live on tables next to the wall. They're used for piecing or garment/bag making and I don't need a lot of room behind them. I FMQ on my Juki and it is in the center of the room in an EziSew table with a large "folding" table behind it. I have an extension for the EziSew table to make the space to the left of the machine better for holding the quilt when I'm doing FMQ

I have my sewing machine on a long Ikea table with two sets of drawers one on each end. under the table.... My cabinet sewing machines sets under the two windows in my room.. one is a singer treadle ,(1894) refurnished,, and a 301 in another cabinet...my two black featherweights and my white featherweight are in their cases, sitting in the room. They are used when my oldest daughter comes to sew with me..I have a huge closet that is full of cabinets with some material and other sewing items in them...I have 2 glass door cabinets with drawers underneath from Ikea that hold all my fabric that is in with organized by color...my walls are covered with thread racks, a wall hanging, and sewing decor...my long arm is a 6 ft frame with a Janome pro maker 16.. it sits in the room in front of the sewing machine cabinets...and I have my cutting table in front of that..yes it's a little crowded but I make it work...I live with my youngest daughter that built a new home almost two years ago, I moved from my home of 56 years after My hubby passed away....she built me a private suite on one side of the home, bedroom, huge bath and sewing room..I have my own privacy, washer and dryer built in the bath, I love it all, but had two sewing rooms at my other place..so packing up a 11 room home to put into 3 rooms was a challenge but it works for me...I just turned 80 in August, but got a lot of sewing, quilting left to do. I am in good health..and a happy quilter....

All 3 are in my dining room with 2 sitting on my dining table amd the 3rd has it's own cabinet that it sits in. In the corner of the dining room. 2 are singers and 1 a kenmore.

When I read the question I laughed and was about to answer "Which one?" but reading the replies, it looks like most of us have more than 1 machine going at a time.
At the moment, 3 of my machines share a long Ikea table. I am currently mostly using my Janome 4900 so it is in the center on one long side. At one end, is Mabel, my 301A who has the most important task of sewing zippers in pouches and totes. I love her tiny sewing foot--even better than her zipper foot. And at the other end is Brunhilda, my 1980's Viking and my latest addition. We still aren't very well acquainted but I try to sew with her every week or so. My Pfaff is on the floor, waiting for a service. Having tension issues with her. |
Let's see:
1.My vintage- ish Brother VX560 in on a table facing the wall between two windows in my studio- I use it for sewing rope bowls. 2. My Brother PC420 is in an Arrow Sewnatra cabinet that backs up to the table where my Brother PQ1500s usually sits. These two table jut out into the middle of the room. 3. Brother PQ1500s is currently downstairs on the dining room table because I needed the space to spread out for doing a paper piecing project. 4. My Janome 1522PG is currently occupying the table that usually houses the PQ1500s. Usually the Janome is stored under a table in my studio since I mostly use it when I'm taking a class. Right now I'm using it to audition some blocks for a quilt since I don't want to move all the paper piecing stuff away from the PQ1500s downstairs. 5. My Sweet Sixteen is in a corner facing a wall- It's on wheels so I can easily wheel it away from the wall if Need to get to the back. Having it in a corner against the wall helps keep any excess quilt from falling off the back and side. those are the machines that I use regularly. I also have a Kenmore 158.1914 that I seldom use and ought to re-home, and a Singer Featherweight that I converted to hand crank and also seldom use. Rob |
My Bernina is in the middle of my room in a Koala cabinet. My Juki is against a wall in the room. I have 2 chairs and my cat Mookie is always fighting me for the chair I'm in lol.
One of my FW's is in a FW table in my sunroom. It's so cute in there. |

It’s a small room and full. Behind the cutting mats are 2 Koala cabinets facing each other with most used machines. If needed, a machine can be removed and use insert for a large flat surface. Each cabinet has an extension to go over the drawer. The window is to the right of the photo, so I can look out from Brother machine. To the left is the design wall. |

My sewing area is in our finished basement in what would otherwise be known as a “red room.” It is HUGE! I keep my serger, embroidery machine, and ironing board against a wall, but my sewing and sitdown quilting machine are in the middle of the room. I have them facing the television, though I admit I hardly ever watch TV while sewing; I listen to audio books instead. I would take a picture, but the room is an even bigger disaster than normal! Who else is late with Christmas things?

Mine is against a wall but when I am working on a big quilt or FMQ, I move it to the center of the room. I will put a chair on each side to hold any quilt hanging over so there is not drag when sewing on binding or FMQ.

Patrice, it's not that table. It's a newly crafted one for Featherweights. I'd love to find the old one too. :)

I share my sewing room with my granddaughters' bunk bed and dresser for their overnighters. My sewing table is against a window with a cutting card table on lifts to the left. When I am adding borders, binding, putting a big quilt together or machine quilting I move the sewing center to the middle of the room and put the back extender up. That gives me a lot of room.
|
By a window because that is the only area in the bedroom it would fit
|
I had to look around. Four of them face a wall. Two of them face a window. Two of them have my back to the window. One is in it's travel case. I can't part with any of them. They each do something different or have a function that is missing in the other machines. I know a lady who has 32 of them set up in her garage!!!
|
Where is your sewing machine
Near a wall, but I am using an old wood dining table.
|
My janome is in the middle of the room on a 36" shelving unit. I stand to sew and the shelf unit is perfect for it.
|
My Baby Lock Lyric (named Riz) is between 2 windows in what is the "guest" bedroom. I like to look outside while I am sewing.
|
I have a large living room (about 16' x 24') so one end is the living room and the other end is for sewing, with my fabric storage in totes, ironing board, and SM on a large table by the window.
