My schedule is cleaning in the mornings and quilting in the afternoons. Of course, quilt guild and sewing groups also meet in the mornings. And then toward the end of the week there are garage and estate sales in the mornings. During the summer, my walk must be taken in the morning when it is still cool. The bottom line is that maybe 2 mornings/week are spent cleaning with something else getting in the way the other days.

My husband does the dishes, and I never cook.

I Just love how different, and alike, we all are! My house is "comfortable"...it is the house everyone always wants to be at. We have nice things, but they are just that..."things". I have two signs...one in the entryway says..."My house was clean last week...sorry you missed it", and the one on the porch says..."You can write in the dust...just don't date it." Both signs have generated many comments and laughs. My laundry gets done, my dishes washed, floors swept, bathrooms cleaned and carpets shampooed....just not "anal" about it. Life is too short!!!

I can't remember where I got this idea, but you can make a wonderful tool for cleaning under the fridge, washing machine, sofa, etc. out of an extra yardstick and a strip of fleece. Cut the fleece almost as long as the yardstick and wide enough to go around it plus an inch or so. Seam the raw edges across the bottom and up the side and slip the yardstick in. It picks up dust bunnies and pet hairs and is easy to clean by sweeping it with a broom, or you can wash the fleece with a load of dark clothes.

I live alone with 3 dogs and a cat. I love to sew cleaning is if I want to use a different sewing machine or I'm changing a bobbin. Some days I sew in comfortable clothes my middle dog brings me other clothes usually a complete set. I think I am OCD to quilting and cleaning the house, doesn't seem to be included. Trying to train dog to take dirty clothes to washer, then will train her to open door and switch on I will put powder in. Next is to train another to put waste paper in bin.

MadQuilter 06-26-2013 12:02 AM

Housework is highly overrated. I do the bare minimum so I can play with my craft. Is anyone were to complain, I'd hand them a rag and invite them to go knock themselves out.

SueDor 06-26-2013 02:20 AM

Glad to hear there are other messy houses, I thought it was just me. Who want to clean, when there asre so many quilt patterns to do!

qwkslver 06-26-2013 02:49 AM

If it doesn't bother you why worry? My mother was an impeccable housekeeper, to the point of making everyone who entered the house or lived there miserable. Therefore I'm a slob. Luckily my husband is retired and a pretty good housekeeper so all I have to do is pitch in occasionally. I also work full time at home though, as a medical transcriptionist. It's all good. Don't worry, be happy.

sandy l 06-26-2013 03:01 AM

I figure if I can keep ahead of the cat hair dust bunnies, it's good

SuzieQuilts 06-26-2013 03:07 AM

My saying is "You can clean all day, but what do you have at the end of the day? A dirty house!" Quilting all day, at least gives you something to show what you have been doing all day.

skothing 06-26-2013 03:11 AM

I noticed the house is cleaned or the quilt room is straight. Can't have both on the same day.

Scrappy Gram 06-26-2013 03:13 AM

I like my Mom's philosophy: "I'm going to be under 6 feet of dust for a very long time, I'm not chasing it while I'm alive."

She liked to garden, read, fish and watch birds.....

sorry, but i guess you'd say I'm OCD about my house including my sewing space. I can not be productive knowing something is out of place in other parts of my home - guilt trip makes me clean first, quilt later

Hmmm, I should post that at our local grocery store...live in a cluster of homes where rarely see any of the wives outside....too busy making sure no dust dares settle in their " museums" and hubbies are busy mowing lawns every 3days whether needed or no----except my house! It is clean but not obsessively so.

lclang 06-26-2013 03:59 AM

If it's clean enough that I don't fear the Health Department and I don't find any live rats in the piles in the sewing room, it's good enough so I can quilt if that's what I want to do!

Latrinka 06-26-2013 04:12 AM

I keep mine decent, but there are plenty of dust bunnies (probably more like rabbits) around here!

QltrSue 06-26-2013 04:48 AM

Years ago, when my three kids were little, I hung a sampler in my kitchen that said "my home is clean enough to be healthy, ans messy enough to be happy.". This attitude has served well for many years, as well as the Sidetracked Home Executive rule, Set the standards for orderliness yourself. For me, I like a clear sink, a made bed, so my handmade comforter and shams look nice, and most things put away. Now that we are retired, we try to pick up after ourselves and keep things in fair shape, without getting obsessive about it. Just our level of comfort. Plenty of time to quilt, too!

Stitch124 06-26-2013 04:55 AM

I work full-time out of the house and my commute is 40 miles one way. I leave at 6am and return at 4:30pm. My DH is retired and makes most of the mess in the house. He cooks and does the dishes, but I don't want a 3 course meal every night and he eats very spicy so I don't always eat what he cooks. He's passion this week is gardening and tracks in mud and grass so he gets to do the vacuuming. He takes care of the lawn too since he is outside anyway. He does his own laundry because he's ruined enough of my work clothes so I told him I will do my own.

I keep the bathrooms clean and sweep the floors, feed and groom the dog and keep the pool clean and treated. They way I see it...I make the money and pay all the bills, do my laundry and pick up after myself, so he can help out with the rest. I also babysit my grandkids every weekend so I MUST quilt just to keep my sanity.

MaggieLou 06-26-2013 05:25 AM

I'm glad I'm not the only one whose house wouldn't be on the cover of Better Homes and Garden. :) I hate housekeeping. The dishes are in the dishwasher. Can't stand dirty dishes in the sink. When it get full they get washed. The rest of the house is a lick and a promise.

carolynjo 06-26-2013 06:00 AM

I, too, keep bathrooms clean, dishes clean, and clothes washed and fold them when I need that load. Dust? Only when necessary. DH runs the vacuum for me (bad back), so presentable? Yes, but not so much. NO one goes into my studio but me, so it looks like a whirlwind went through. Will get back to it after recovery from back surgery 3+ weeks ago.

barny 06-26-2013 06:35 AM

I was raised in a house where we couldn't put our head on the back of the couch. couldn't put ourhands on the arms. We lived in a small town, and people said they could eat on our floor. I don't blame my Mother because when she was small they slept on straw mattresses, Very, Very poor. She loved her house so much. I'm too old to do a lot of housekeeping. I hate it. We work from our home. I cook for 5. I like my kitchen and bathrooms clean, and that about does it. We have a cleaning lady every 2 weeks, but they don't know about under things. Like under the couch, chairs, etc. Just the middle. Real fast. That's my story.

cpcarolyn 06-26-2013 06:52 AM

Loved all the comments. I am a widow so live alone and I am pretty good about picking up after myself because I hate spending time looking for something I need. As for cleaning. I am looking around and you could write it the dust and I need to vacum and clean the bathroom. Maybe it will get done this weedend maybe it won't. I have two baby quilts I am planning on working on and they say it will be hot this weekend. There are no dishes in the dishwasher because I just ran the dishwasher, I ran out of glasses. I'd rather quilt or do other things than clean house. There are no faries that come in and clean for me so it will be there when I get around to it.

narnianquilter 06-26-2013 07:32 AM

I have 2 kids under the age of 2 and both my husband and I are ministers at our church, so we get a lot of people who just randomly stop by. Based on that my rule is this: I can only quilt after the house is clean. Living room, Dining Room, Bathroom, and kitchen. The bedrooms are a different story since no one goes in those except us. The good news is that once it is clean I get 2-3 days before I really have to clean again!

yorkie luv 06-26-2013 07:43 AM

Grass can grow, dishes pile up, dusting and vacuuming don't get done. I have my priorities. ;-) Hwever, I do take care of the dogs first.

Truly, when you look deep, our houses may not be magazine cover ready, but it is lived in by people who enjoy life. I will get the laundry folded, the bathrooms will be cleaned, the house will sparkle, but not today.

amen to all of the above. after the grkids leave their toys stay just as they left them, hubs picks up the doggy toys-he doesn't want to trip over them. i don't worry, i won't trip -i'm stationary - sewing!

Did you hear about the man who said all his wifes were good housekeepers. Every time he divorce
she kept the house.

MargeD 06-26-2013 08:57 AM

My MIL was obsessed with having a clean house - even to the point where she started cleaning mine the day after she arrived for a visit. I'm serious, and I do clean house before company comes. Anyway, I like a clean house but hate housework - not in my "contract" that I have to like it. If dishes and laundry done - no worries. I'm glad my children remember the games we played, Sat. night "drive-in" movies in the living room, picnics in the park and of course the quilts I have made them - that is what I consider my legacy.

BellaBoo 06-26-2013 09:18 AM

I expected my kids to respect their home and take pride in keeping it nice. Being compulsive does not enter the picture to want to live in a nice clean home. I don't mind dirt or mess but it's cleaned up not allowed to be part of the home. I don't want anyone to take off their shoes when entering my home. I don't like going to visit where I'm asked to remove my shoes. Of course if my shoes are muddy or wet that is different. I don't walk through a field or factory before going to visit someone. If you expect someone to take off their shoes then have a clean floor. Many times my shoes are cleaner then the floor I'm asked to walk on.

Iraxy 06-26-2013 11:25 AM

I can't stand to wake up to dirty dishes either.

I leave the clothes in the hamper until the minute they are going to be washed and then do the laundry as fast as I can. I have a little area where I can fold and put them in the basket lickety split.

My bathrooms are clean because I hate a dirty bathroom. Once had a very slobby roommate and I found that that my biggest complaint about him was that he would never clean his the bathroom, Yuck!

My kitchen floor still has remnants of the berry jellies I made but this weekend I will mop it and they will be gone. I am deep in dust, but that's okay. Vacuuming will have to wait until next week.

The scraps on the floor bothering you? Turn around, the door is behind you. Got a project on the machine that needs finishing. That's my excuse and I am sticking to it. LOL

We both work full time and we only have one daughter. We try to keep things picked up but that doesn't always work. When I'm the only one on my feet doing housework, I ask them what's wrong with this picture and then they both help. On weekends we work on chores or special projects until noon, then usually take the rest of the day off. Life is too short. I do try to keep the kitchen clean and cook from scratch. I clean toilets when they need it. I wear shoes in the house so I don't notice how dirty the floors are. He does the floors every six weeks whether they need it or not. :) Some things just aren't worth arguing about any more.
I have a contest to see who can go the longest before picking up little bits of trash on the floor. I always give in and pick it up. When I get frustrated I say Life is too short, then some things aren't worth arguing about any more and then repeat as needed.

Rosyhf, I'm sure those of us on the Board will gladly buy what your selling & gladly pay for the shipping if your able to do that

oldtisme 06-26-2013 03:10 PM

I detest housework, can't really do much anyhow with a bad back can't stand or sit for long periods of time so my siting is reading this board & playing around in face book the standing is making my bed a little laundry every few days & dust mopping dog hairs every couple of days. The dishes get done when the dishwasher is full. The end.

I have a bad back so vacuuming is a chore for me. I plan of getting a Shark vacuum. My friend has one and it is soooo light and easy to use. Maybe it could be a help to you too.

When working outside the home, I used the Sidetracked Home Executive method. This was really helpful for all members of the family. Each had their own chores. Things were cleaned on a 'schedule' but never meant a whole day of cleaning.
Now I use Flylady's approach. Once again, 'cleaning' doesn't fill my days. The kitchen sink is shiny and empty at the end of the day. The bathrooms get a quick swish and swipe at some point during the day. Bed is made and I am dressed to the shoes every morning. Those are daily things that get done. With Flylady there are email reminders of special tasks for that day. None of them are very time consuming. This is a spinoff of the Sidetracked Home Executives. House is always presentable but not sterile. Check out Flylady.com for inspiration and suggestions to housekeeping without letting the house keeps us!
Always time to sew during the day!
