I really don't have any plain white fabric in my stash. I guess I tend to shy away from it because all I ever seem to find is thin stuff you can see through. Well now I'm needing some. What white fabric should I buy?
Thanks |
I was told by a quilter to buy Kona at Joann's or you can pay more $ and buy some at a quilt shop
Moda Bella Solid line is very nice. I buy solids from that line now. Kona is good but Kona is a bit heavy feeling for me. I found some great solid white cotton at WalMart a few years ago. I wished I had bought the bolt. All white fabric is not the same white. So be sure and buy all you need from one brand.
I use cotton sheets if I need a solid white. You can always find one on sale.
I use the Kona from Joanne's also.
I just buy Bleach muslin
Kona from Joann's is great...and it is on sale!
This is a question I have wondered about many times. Thank you for asking./Regards, Dorothy

Very good topic. I shy away from buying white and I know that I am missing out.
Kona cotton's whites are really nice and not see through. I have bought some and really been pleased with them.
I think Kona feels coarse and clunky compared to some other fabrics.
Kona cotton user here!
Ditto on the bleached muslin. It feels so nice and soft after it has been washed. There was another one I saw at Joann and at my LQS that is a pricier muslin. I want to say it was called Southern Belle or something like that. Anyone else know the real name of what I am thinking of?
I bought a bolt of 50/50 cotton/bamboo from Joann's at 1/2 price (35.00) and loved it so much I went back and bought a second bolt. It's thin, but not transparent, and feels amazing. I have already used 1/2 of the first bolt. It was pre-packaged near the cutting table.
Working now with Kona "Snow" and 30's prints. I like Kona for solids, though I usually get mottled fabrics instead of plain solids...
I like the white on whites, they are not as see through and I love the texture they add to my quilts :D:D:D
I buy the Kona at JoAnns, or the more expensive white muslim anywhere. The cheaper stuff is so see through!
I just bought 6 yards of white Kona at JoAnns last week. It was not on sale, but I had the 50% off coupon, which is always a better deal than their sale price. It is $5.99/yd. I have a bolt of white muslin, but it is sort of thin for this particular quilt, which is very time consuming. Embroidery and applique are part of the quilt, so I want something that will last and wear well.
I'm usually a KONA girl, but the bamboo/cotton sounds worth a try.
I like a tone on tone white. It takes away the sharp plain white look and adds some texture to my background.
Kauffman's Kona cotton is nice. The quality of muslin really varies but some is nice very nice. I also got some plain white yardage at Connecting Threads that was very nice, but I'm not sure they always have solids at their website. I wish now I'd gotten more.
I just bought a Moda white that was fantastic.
I know it is a bit more expensive but it was worth the extra cost. Nettie |
Bleached muslin , white on whites. Really - that's all I ever use. I buy Kona solid colors - but muslin is really my staple. Remember - you are going to have batting behind it. It will not shadow through. And there are some really nice "quality" muslins out there. I've never had a problem with them. The age of some of my quilts can prove that.

There's white, and there's white, too. winter white bright white soft white off white ............ |
I just bought the Moda solid white, and I like it a lot. It is quilt shop pricing, though.
For a lower price, I'd buy bleached muslin. |
Southern Belle feels great. Love it.
I love Kona fabric. I found some white on white at Hancock Fabrics. It's one of the few whites that called to me.
Buy a tone on tone. They add more interest than a solid white and generally are a better quality. You can buy different shades of white-cream. Sometimes an off white looks better than a real white. Personally I prefer the off white for my scrappy quilts.
Try this out for solids. The white and black comes on 6 yard bolts, if you need that much. I bought the black from here awhile back and it was fine great I wish I had bought the white back then too. It was only 17.00 for the 6 yards. lol
They have it by the yard too. http://www.fabricdepot.com/index.php...=kona%20cotton |
Marshall Dry Goods has the best price online.
I too have bought Kona at Joanns and like it. |

I like Kona very much but have found --as with every fabric--
there are different qualities. I have bought from Joanns (when you can find it in stock) and it's okay but if you have a Hobby Lobby store nearby try their Kona. It is different. What I do now is buy 1/4 yard of several whites from different places--pin a note to them and write the end of the bolt info on the note with a number--1,2,3, etc.-- and then when I get home I cut it in half--pin info note onto both and use a permanent pen and mark the number onto both notes and both fabrics. Put aside one half and then take the other half to the washer--save the note--and wash with a full load of laundry. Then I compare them all with the project I want to use them with. I know, I know this takes a little time but in the end you WILL BE much happier with your finished project!! And we all know how much time, thought, and money that can go into these projects!!! |
I have always used Moda Bella for solids. Never tried Kona. Think I will order from FabricDepot on the 6-yd., good price. I am presently needing to add white/white tone on tones to my stash, I am completely out! Any sales going on for this???
I guess I don't tend to buy a lot of white. Usually only to print on and then I buy the high thread count. If I buy a solid it is Kona. I buy a lot of black Kona. I guess it's the teens in the family. They are partial to black. All black is not equal. I assume white is the same. Be sure to get enough for your project. I have had the problem before with running out and it not matching  Now I will have to look at white the next time I am out.

A low thread count Egyptian cotton sheet is best for quilt fabric use.
I buy white by the bolt. I am now on my second bolt. My friends will buy yardage from me from time to time, so I haven't really used it all. I get the Kona Cotton from a store on Camano Island, WA. They are an online store but we can shop in person since we are so close. She give me a great deal on bolts. I love the weight of the Kona solids, it isn't flimsy nor is it heavy.
BTW - whichever you get, mark the fabric because there is no selvedge edge with the information on it on solids so you can get it mixed up if you buy from different manufactures.
