No fun to have around at or with your quilt group!!!!!! and I feel sorry for them.

Labtechkey, don't you listen to all these non-believers. The Quilt Police do exist. They come in the night and knock on your dream door (usually after you've made some insignificant error in a project). As you ponder whether or not to get up and rip out the minor error, the quilt police hover over your bed and chant "rip it now, rip it now, rip it now...."
Shame on you ladies for not being truthful to our "newbie". I've always counted the Quilting Board as a place where I could get good, honest feedback - no matter how much it may hurt. Excuse me, I leaving now, going into my closet and pray for each of you. I love you all and I know you'll do better in the future. |
They are self elected and are to be ignored. LOL

I met a 'Quilt Police Officer' once. I love foundation piecing and was looking at FQ at my LQS. After I had picked out several FQ and some Jelly Rolls I went to pay for them. The woman who was waiting on me asked me what I was going to use them for. When I told her I was doing foundation piecing for a quilt, she made this big sigh and said that was not real quilting, but cheating. After stopping myself from saying something I shouldn't, I said, "Oh well, then I guess I won't be needing this stuff" and turned around and walked out. By the way, she had already rung everything up, the total was a little over $200.00.

But they also have others that look like they were made by someone full of hate, torn almost apart in shreds by wild dogs, left out in the rain for a month, grew uglier by the minute, stained all over with mud and worse and then sold for millions of dollars to people who have way too much money and way too little sense! But others are fine examples of craftsmanship. You can see which way I lean but I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just wonder what the 'quilt police" would say. They would probably have heart attacks! |
They are the same people who feel the need to point out that we are too fat, or that our shoes don't go with your outfit. They are righteous, overzealous, busybodies who miss a certain social filter and a certain amount of kindness. They generally appoint themselves.

I was at a quilt show, and one of the quilts hanging was done by a 90 yr. old. Machine pieced ( all the points were beautiful), and it was hand quilted by her. Her quilt was told that even though it looked good her colors didn't really go with the pattern. This quilter has been in magazines, and had won many other awards. Found out later, that this judge didn't like earth tones in a quilt, and if those were your colors she found something wrong with it no matter what. Now I would call that judge the Quilting Police. That isn't helpful to anybody.

Over heard ONE (yep just one) at a quilt show today. "SHE machine quilted. Her hand stitching isnt even. He didnt miter his corners. blah blah blah" I then heard someone ask her if she had entered a quilt...are you ready? "Oh, I dont quilt, I dont even sew. I just like coming to quilt shows because my DIL has to drive me and she doesnt like spending the day with me" You think????? Poor DIL. |
i've met a few that thought they were but they were just boogers hired by the boogyman.

I appreciate all your answers to this question because you find these people in every club or organization out there. Olebat, I do love your answer, it can all be in the way you ask for feedback as to what kind you get. I don't mind critisisim as long as it is helpful and not hurtful. Since im just learning and have yet to complete a project, I think i'm still protected for a short time from the quilt police. |

that's why i love quilts. each one tells a story. sometimes it is filled with love, other times, with hate. some are filled with a story of plenty, others, a time of want. sometimes they tell of amazing skill--sometimes, sheer determination. sometimes they tell about a person's quilting education--or the lack of it. maybe that's what the "QP" don't get--the story in each one. yeah. real quilters get it...

Actually, I like the "fur babies" type of quilp police best of all. They have nothing to say, just circle, lay down and take a nap!
|
I just loved that question anddddddd the answers were perfect.........lol.......

From all the talent I've enjoyed viewing on this site, I could never understand how anyone would dare criticize any of your work, ladies and gents - I must tell you I look forward to opening every topic and usually find myself in awe of the piece of art shining back at me. Kudos to you all for your talents. I feel blessed to be a part of this. Happy Easter - Happy Passover!

I noticed that many of you from the list stopped by my blog to say hello to the "quilt police". Thanks for stopping by!
Leslie http://leslietuckerjenison.blogspot.com/ |
I ran into one of them. She started quilting at the same time I did, less than a year ago, but felt a need to tell our instructor, LQS owner that she missed a few points on a quilt.
|
They come from the planet Mongo. :hunf:
|
Several years ago I asked a quilt shop owner (quilting police) if she gave classes on quilt-as-you go. She brushed me off and implied the only way to quilt was by hand and not by machine.
Personally I think there are too many quilts to make and too little time to do everything by hand even though I love to do hand sewing and quilting as time allows. I admire anyone who does all hand quilting however. |
I think its over-opinionated people who wish they could quilt -My Pops always said If'n ya ain't got nothin nice to say -say nothin at all I've been quilting a long time and I make bunches of mistakes and give all my quilts away and every one loves them and they never see my mistakes all they see is the love that went into them
|
Really enjoyed reading all these answers and the stories that went along with them.
|
Hmm, the quilt police....I think they're the same ones that also claim to be "recipe" police, "child rearing" police, "fashion" police, etc. Since they usually know little or nothing about the subjects they claim expertise on, we don't have to pay any attention to them. :D :D :D
Loved all the answers here. |

Best thing to do is pity them. froggyintexas |
I have one in my quilting group. She can pick out a mistake 100 feet away!!! I feel like I am being scrutinized!! I have lost a lot of self-esteem because of her and am thinking about changing to a different group.
Sorry for the rambling!!!!!!! |
Just as in other areas of life, there are people who happily provide their "unsolicited opinions". They tell you how you should change your colors, change the size of your blocks etc. Ignore it! Each time you sew quilt as if you will never sit at your machine again and savor each moment.
|
It is very interesting to me that many people feel there is only one right way to construct a quilt. Isn't there enough room at the table for all of us?
I began my quilting journey making fairly traditional quilts by hand. Eventually, I transitioned to machine-pieced, then, machine-pieced and quilted, quilts. When Hollis Chatelain won best of show in 2004 for "Precious Water", I heard many people scream about how it was unfair because this "wasn't really a quilt"..? Because it was dye-painted it is suddenly no longer a quilt? It is 3 layers stitched together. How is that NOT a quilt? It makes me shake my head. I have a deep love and respect for traditional quilts, whether pieced by hand or machine. I don't make many traditional quilts anymore, but I still love em. They are all in your head!
|
My husband, who knows everything(!) says since I send my pieced tops, batting and backing out to be sewn together by machine I have therefore not quilted it. So I therefore am not a quilter. You may remember his interesting definition of creative. If I hand sew it together he considerd me to therefore be a quilter. So........I said since he plows, cultivates and harvests using machines he must therefore not be a farmer! If he did the work by hand, he would be. His reply......."Well, thats different." Gotta love 'em :x
|
I run from the quilt police!! I hope they never catch me, so in the meantime I make my quilts the way I see fit!!

I consider them to be people with their noses up in the air who are very insecure to begin with. I don't worry about anyone criticizing my quilts. My friends care about the beauty of the quilt in my eyes, not in the flaws they see. Anyone who can't do that, I don't need in my life. If I want your opinion, believe me, I WILL ask. Just enjoy what you do and know that no quilt is perfect. The Amish even put a "mistake" in every quilt on purpose. And I don't know any better quilter than them.
|
You hit the Nail on the head, Quilter "Want-a-bees".
|
I've generally found that 'quilt police' are the people who are jealous of anyone else who shows a smidgin of talent or original thought!
|
I know one that works at my local Hancock's Fabric Store. She about turned me against quilting before I ever got started.
|
Self righteous, know it all morons who think they know it all and don't know how to keep their opinions to themselves. They see themselves as ( top, better, best, expert, etc. ) quilters.
Oh and by the way, they are self appointed. |
They are the people who know more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing! If they come to your house, don't let 'em in!
