Since I'm new to quilting I have often wondered who the "Quilting Police" are and how do they get elected??? I mean are they people whose ancestors taught them to quilt generation after generation or are they people who just happen to have alot of talent and declared themselves police over all quilt domain???? :hunf: just asking....

sueisallaboutquilts 04-22-2011 02:14 PM

There are no quilt police!! Some people just think they are!! lol

huntannette 04-22-2011 02:14 PM

ha ha ha !! good question!!

Chele 04-22-2011 02:19 PM

Fortunately, the Quilting Police are few and far between. Don't worry a bit about them. Just have fun and enjoy the quilting process. It's really fun!

SamanthaLee 04-22-2011 02:21 PM

I think she runs a shop here in my city. Lol.

Ramona Byrd 04-22-2011 02:24 PM

It's someone who has no tact or enough talent to do things she wants to, so she (rarely he) feels it necessary to make snide comments about what more enthusiastic quilters actually finish with love.

Stitchnripper 04-22-2011 02:24 PM

I think some people dub themselves quilting police, but the rest of us ignore them and their comments.

Holice 04-22-2011 02:35 PM

Overly opinionated quilters who believe they are always right.

fabric_fancy 04-22-2011 02:35 PM

this is the only person i've met that was willing to admit to being the "quilt police"

Yup, those are the quilt police  I meet some every once and a while, thank them for their opinion and do what I want on MY quilt.

Just ten or so days ago, I was at a quilt shop with my paint cards to pick some fabics for a lone star...a lady there asked me what I was shopping for, and I told her I was participating in a challenge to make a quilt using colors only from two paint cards that were selected for me, they were in shades of peach nd orange and I was going to make a lone star. She said that would be pretty and went on to ask me what color I was going to use for the background...I showed her the faint peach batik I picked, and she went on to tell me that it won't work unless I used a white or black background  I thanked her and told her I will think about it. Well I made my star and guess what olor background I used :?: And it seemed to work just fine.

I enjoyed all the answers.

They are the three bitty witches who came in the quilt shop and examined every one of my eight bags and had the owner put a pin in the three places where there was a bobble. They had to turn things inside out and pull and tug, but they found them.

The rest of us look at a quilt as a whole and appreciate the beauty. We say done is best. WE do not criticize especially when we could not do any better

seweasy 04-22-2011 02:54 PM

From the ones I've met,(have to say I've only come across one or two) they seem to be the ones who have quilted for years and used to doing things the "old way" and not interested in learning something new.
I've taught myself how to quilt and would love to have the help of someone who's been "around the block",so to speak but don't want someone who thinks their way is the only way. I may not being it right but if I'm happy with what I've done; what difference does it make if I made a few so-called mistakes. I might like learning if I need to do something better but maybe I'm just happy that I could do it. Chris

You guys are awesome!!!!

So true and very well said :D

suern3 04-22-2011 03:18 PM

My quilt police are mainly in my head! LOL

SamanthaLee 04-22-2011 03:26 PM

Too funny! I think most of quilting is heart... Not the perfection of stitches, not the designer fabric used, not the color combinations, or anything else like that. It's about heart and soul. The quilting police have no clue.

Divokittysmom 04-22-2011 03:29 PM

Quilting Police: Someone who delights in bursting another's bubble!
I totally agree with all other comments!! Some people LOVE to hear themselves talk talk talk...but haven't got the talent to back it up! JMHO

Divokittysmom 04-22-2011 03:30 PM

AMEN to that!!

It is a rather unfortunate disease, either genetic or environmentally developed, especially if their childhood main care giver suffered from the same disease. The clinical sign is the insatiable need to ALWAYS say SOMETHING combined with their own delusions of perfection.

mtnative 04-22-2011 04:05 PM

So glad you asked this question:) All the answers have be enlightening!!!

nativetexan 04-22-2011 04:11 PM

don't know and don't want to meet them either!

QuiltswithConvicts 04-22-2011 04:35 PM

There are no Quilting Police. They were arrested & charged with impersonating an officer!

Quilt Police are those that don't have many friends

BellaBoo 04-22-2011 05:12 PM

I think my guild must be the seat of Hall of Fame quilt police. The elderly founding members! Nothing pleases them more then to tell others where they messed up. I wish there was a 'retirement age' for guild members. LOL

Way too funny! I think my ex-MIL was a quilting police at one time. Heck, she was also the judge and jury, and most of the time convicted me of not paying attention to her. My sentence? Having to listen to her complain over and over and over again...............

Furza Flyin 04-22-2011 07:16 PM

Quilt Police = Snooty, Old(no matter what thier real age is), Noseybodies, that have nothing better to do then find something to Tsk Tsk about in a quilt.

Over heard ONE (yep just one) at a quilt show today. "SHE machine quilted. Her hand stitching isnt even. He didnt miter his corners. blah blah blah" I then heard someone ask her if she had entered a quilt...are you ready? "Oh, I dont quilt, I dont even sew. I just like coming to quilt shows because my DIL has to drive me and she doesnt like spending the day with me" You think????? Poor DIL.

bamamama 04-22-2011 07:23 PM

The quilt police usually leave you a PM so that no one else will know who they are. You can delete those!

The "Quilt Police" are people who think quilts should be made a certain way. They are the judgmental, self-righteous snobs of the quilting world.

If there were quilt police, I would never be able to pass the test. I am a self taught, try anything person. My piecing abilities are atrocious but I love it anyway. Just finished piecing a Snake River log cabin and hoping to get someone to quilt it for me. They probably will refuse because of the piecing.

You are kidding aren't you, right? ? ?

I have always thought that my cat Peach was the quilt police. She always has to be the first to try out a new quilt.

ksea 04-23-2011 04:23 AM

I personally choose to beleive that the Quilt Police live in NeverNever land with the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy the Lepracans and Peter Pan and TinkerBell and that they ride around on unicorns and dragons and reek havoc upon those that believe!!

annesthreads 04-23-2011 04:24 AM

Quilt police: those who will tell a beginner who's thrilled with her first quilt that the points aren't accurate. The local group that doesn't welcome beginners. The member of the online group who questions whether some members are good enough to take part in the round robin. Anyone who has a superiority complex or who discourages others, especially the less confident, from discovering the joys of quilting.

olebat 04-23-2011 04:26 AM

One must be careful. This can be a grey area. The characteristics here mentioned are typical of the QP, and grey is usually their (natural) hair color. I understand that they can be bribed with fat quarters, but I wouldn't waste my time or fabric. The reason I issue caution, is that there are genuinely concerned people who will scrutinize our works and provide helpful comments or suggestions. You should ask for feed back. If someone makes comments about mismatched points, that may be a quilt police. If you ask, "How do I avoid these mismatched points?" then everyone who answers is a mentor. (Before you asked, they were making comments on the pretty color combo.)

Recently, I was picking the brain of a fellow guild member about the overall operation of the retreats, shows, fund-raisers, etc. New to this guild, it seems so different than the other groups to which I've belonged. I was advised to hang my quilts for show, rather than for judging, at our upcoming guild show. She described the judges as unemotional nit-pickers who don't know how to have fun. So, yes, we have plain clothes quilt police in my area.
