Who else has two sets of notions?

I have 2 sets of notions. One set to use at home and the other set I keep packed in my sewing machine travel bag. I used to pack them when I went somewhere but I always forgot items. After borrowing several times I decided to buy a second set of notions. My notions include: regular notions, rulers, iron, scissors, cutting mats and other things. How many of you have a duplicate set of notions for taking with you to classes, retreats and sewing with friends?

Lori S 02-05-2012 01:48 PM

I have more than two sets just for my sewing room!! Too many time I have lost a small ruler , pincushion , sissors etc ... so I have way more than two sets of notions( the ones I use the most). I only hope I can find the one I need at that moment I need it.

loves_2_quilt 02-05-2012 01:55 PM

I have duplicates of some things that I take to my father-in-law's so I can mend this things. I don't have extra rulers and such since I don't get to go to classes very often.

Stitchnripper 02-05-2012 01:56 PM

I have lots of duplicates. Usually because I forget what I have. the duplicates come in handy for classes, travel, or when I can't find something which happens all too often.

That would be me too!

I don't go much to classes, but I do have duplicates as I hand quilt down stairs and machine quilt upstairs. I hope to brave enough to go to a weekend retreat quilt class, but it seems that I heard that everyone has a friend with them. I have lots of little scizzors and knippers, thimbles, rippers, and cutting boards.

Gramie bj 02-05-2012 02:58 PM

I also have more than one set of notions. I keep them seprate in sewing boxes, or baskets, so when I want to take a project someplace or just go to the living room to work on something while watching T.V. I have everything on hand. I do not duplicate my special rulers but do have some small ones like the 6 inch, I have a box each for embroidrey, applique, english paper piecing, crochet, general mending and sewing, 2 boxes for embellishments ( 1 is just for all the beads, an speciality items), and my class supplies that always stay in my case. Then there is my everyday quilting notions, each box also contains pins needles pincushion ect. things that are not special to the project but needed. Over the years I have slowly made these boxes so the expence has been spread out over time, it is sure nice to decide to do some applique and just pick up the fabric and one sewing basket and have everything I need instead of having to dig into my class box or run all over my sewing area to gather everything up before I can start. Oh Ya! these are good size boxes, I can store my project in with the supplies if needed.

I think I have duplicates of some and triplicates of some and quads of some and quilnts of some ...shall I go on? Invariably though, I will need then or my neighbor will need something or another friend will....life is good when you have sewing/quilting buddies who know they can call you in a time of "need"! This even includes fabric....my DH thinks I could be competitive with Hancocks! LOL,LOL

Pam B 02-05-2012 04:11 PM

I have duplicates of most of my notions (it helps that I acquired all my late MILs sewing things when she passed). I have a complete set of notions at each of my machine cabinets upstairs in my sewing room and another set of items in a basket downstairs. I have a notebook like thing at one of my machines and when I go to a class, all I have to do is close it and put it in my bag.

Painiacs 02-05-2012 04:13 PM

I have duplicates just so they are all over the house!!!

EmbQuilt 02-05-2012 04:26 PM

I too have many duplicates and many triplicates etc. Of some notions. I have a bag of basic sewing supplies in a class bag that came with a ruler and mat. I usually add to it depending on what type of class I am taking. I have a small mat and ruler and rotary cutter always by my machine and a large mat with a larger ruler and have recently added it's own rotary cutter for there. I was constantly leaving the one cutter behind - it would be at whatever spot I wasn't at at the time! I had an extra cutter just didn't get the aha moment until lots of walking around the room to get the forgotten cutter!

jollyquilting 02-05-2012 04:40 PM

OH I see there are others like me. I get teased all the time because when others come over to quilt, I have plenty of extras to use if they forget anything, including sewing machines. LOL

jacee kay 02-05-2012 04:45 PM

I find it easier to have a set ready to go to retreats. I don't have to think of what to take it is already packed ready to go. I do have more than two of several things I use alot.

luvTooQuilt 02-05-2012 04:47 PM

I have lots of dups of everything- including rulers.. Im really good at mis-placing things andits easier to grab one that was actually put away..

ive got over a doz seam rippers.. and I lost count on scissors and nippers..

jaciqltznok 02-05-2012 05:11 PM

I have about 4 sets....though two are for sewing, and two are for hand...oh wait..I have 3 for sewing if you count the entire sewing room...I have two sets extra, one for classes that stays packed in the machine travel case and one for quick trips to sew-ins, etc...

Divokittysmom 02-05-2012 05:38 PM

I too have duplicate sewing notions. I have 2 machines, both in the same room but don't feel like running from one side to the other so I keep a set beside each machine. This makes it super easy when I want to pack up one of my machines for travel in our RV.

lalaland 02-05-2012 05:53 PM

Now I'm thinking mmmmmmmmmm, I need 3 sets of notions. My sewing machine is in the family room because it's too crowded in my sewing room, but sometimes I set up my small classroom machine on my cutting table and sew in the sewing room (what a concept!) so I have a set of notions on my cutting table and in the family room, bit I don't have a set for classes. I could stick it in the roller case I use to haul my classroom machine around. Thanks for the idea!!

LadyElisabeth 02-05-2012 06:27 PM

We should think of a name for the second, or third, or fourth sets. but you are more organized, having a set packed and ready to go. Good plan

BellaBoo 02-05-2012 06:28 PM

I have duplicates of my duplicates! No way I would have just one of anything I need and use for quilting. Unless it was a long arm! I have more rulers and scissors then other tools.

Shelbie 02-05-2012 06:57 PM

I have a machine and a complete stitching bag packed at all times ready to grab and go. I usually teach one day a week and stitch another day so it is a time saver for me to keep it packed. My quilt buddies always know that they can borrow from me because I've always got it in my magic green bag. I have a separate bag packed for everything (church bag, library bag, school bag etc). This habit has kept me organized and has saved me hours of packing and unpacking. I've always loved making bags so it has been a perfect use for them. As they are all different, once glance tells me that I have the right bag and I know it has the stuff I need.

FroggyinTexas 02-05-2012 07:15 PM

Yes, yes and yes! Two or more of nearly everything. froggyintexas

QuiltnLady1 02-05-2012 07:23 PM

I have a travel bag packed with scissors, rotary cutter, pins, thread, bobbins, markers, needles cutter blades,... When I go to classes, I add a cutting mat and some rulers (which ones depends on what I am making) and grab my travel iron and my traveling machine. I don't have many duplicate rulers, but I do have duplicate mats and cutters (and they reside anywhere I can find a flat surface to cut on.

mighty 02-05-2012 09:48 PM

Let's just say I have several sets. LOL

mrs. fitz 02-05-2012 10:19 PM

Only two (LOL)???

natalieg 02-05-2012 11:33 PM

I have three sets...one in the sewing room in the basement, one at the sewing area upstairs and one set packed in my bag for sewing group every week....and of course extras everywhere!

Annaquilts 02-05-2012 11:38 PM

I don't but it sounds like a great idea.

jcrow 02-05-2012 11:43 PM

I always forget what I have and then I buy the same thing again. I have 2 of so many rulers and other gadgets laying around. But, I have a friend in Russia and I'm making a care package for her and putting in all my doubles. She has a hard time getting things over there. I sent her some fabric and she wrote me that she couldn't believe she had some Moda fabric. Made me want to send her more. She used it right up and put up pictures on her blog. She's a sweetie. I met her through our blogs.

Sadiemae 02-06-2012 09:40 AM

I cannot afford it, but it would be nice to have extras.

jgriinke 02-06-2012 11:11 AM

I have at least duplicates of many things and like someone else said - some of the things I have more than that. Why is it that sometimes I still can't find what I need??? Maybe too much stuff!?? LOL

Sandra in Minnesota 02-06-2012 11:20 AM

Yup, have dups and trips, but they aren't together in one place. Someday I will have to get organized!

Central Ohio Quilter 02-06-2012 11:37 AM

I have one set in my camper and at least one set plus several various pieces and parts in my sewing room.

When I find some items on clearance, or at a garage sale, I can't help but thinking it is always nice to have an extra this or that, just in case!

stampinteresa 02-06-2012 01:02 PM

I am like Shelbie. I have a bag for different things: tutoring (one per student); Sunday School/Church: Sunday nights missions group: substitute bag which is large enough to add a sewing project or rubberstamping project. Just like those of you with many unfinished sewing projects or WIPs; I have hand sewing, applique, postcard applique and cards to put together in the small gift bags lined up on bookcase in LR so I can leave the house with a project and of course a book. You just never know when things will get boring and you have to keep your hands busy. I had a professor once tell me if my hands were not busy my mouth was. Hehehe I guess it was a better class when I brought crocheting. Therefore, I have several sets of notions... Do not want to count...Ex. packing for Indy...I ended of with 5 pincushions, I guess I forgot I packed the first 4. We are fun bunch and share. Teresa

Delta 02-06-2012 01:11 PM

good afternoon. I have 4 sets. 1 travel sewing kit. 2 by my chair in my sewing box. 3 next to one machine 4 next to the other machine I hate using a seam ripper or something and then needing it at another place. I only have a few items I use. lol

jitkaau 02-07-2012 05:49 AM

I have a separate set for each sewing machine, for exactly that reason...if I had one sewing machine with me, the notion I wanted was always with another machine.

gailinva 02-07-2012 05:56 AM

Me too with the seam rippers!!!!

Longarm 02-07-2012 06:03 AM

I have 2, or more, of several items. Usually because I see a good deal and can't remember if I already have it or I buy it thinking my daughter or granddaughter might like it and they already have it so I end up keeping things. But since money has gotten tighter and supplys more expensive I have been returning some items that I know I will probably never use a duplicate or triplicate of.

Anna O 02-07-2012 06:08 AM

I can relate. I have a set upstairs, a set downstairs and a set for travel. Who has time to go looking for what you need when you have quilting to do!

royllsister 02-07-2012 06:18 AM

This would be me! Duplicates in the sewing room as I have 5 machines set up and ready to use so I have notions in the drawer near each one. Seam rippers, 6" seam guide/ruler, screwdriver, and the list goes on, lol. It is so handy for me that way.

Busy Bee Billie 02-07-2012 06:48 AM

I am known in our quilting group as the notion queen. I love notions and always have what they need when they forget a notion. I even have notions that I have no clue how to use.
