Could be me.
I did something that I know better than to do. Brain must have been stuck on stupid yesterday evening.
As some of you know I had bought 9 yards of fabric at a thrift shop a couple of days ago. I always wash the thrift shop finds. The fabric was black w/white stripes, solid white and a solid dark red. Does anybody realize what did yet? I now have black w/pink stripes, solid pink and dark red. I know better than to wash red with any color, I even put 2 color catchers in the wash so somewhere in my mind I knew better. My Dd just laughed at me, she is a mean teenager. Oh well I didn't have any black and pink fabric anyway. Chalk it up to a lesson learned, don't do laundry when I am tired. I am laughing at my self and shaking my head.
Can anybody beat me for the booby prize? What did you do yesterday that you knew better than to do.

raptureready 05-06-2010 04:54 AM

Even with color catchers I still group like colors together. Now I might put all the browns and blacks together, the blues and greens, the purples and reds but not red with white. You get my vote. LOL

beachlady 05-06-2010 04:56 AM

Try washing it again and you might be surprised that it might go back to the original color. Ask me how I know!!!

grammyp 05-06-2010 04:56 AM

At least it was a thrift purchase, and had not been put into a quilt yet. It would be a shame to have a finished quilt change colors.

I went to work yesterday. I knew better, but did it anyway. It was typical day and I was SOOOOO glad to get back home.

sandpat 05-06-2010 04:56 AM

  Well....sorry, but I get to laugh too....When I was a teen, I had the greatest white jumpsuit..it was really cute!! Halter top, and little tiny red piping on it to make it look kinda "sailor" like, know what I mean?? Well, into the wash it went (waaayyyy before anyone even thought about color catchers)...taaa-daaaa.......a New PINK jumpsuit.....

Well, enjoy your black and pink fabric, you know its not a bad color combo and will probably look just great in a quilt!

Moonpi 05-06-2010 05:41 AM

I have seen Carbona Color run remover at my local Hancock store, but have never tried it. Might be worth a try.

cjomomma 05-06-2010 06:37 AM

I am rewashing everything seperately so let's see what happens. Fingers crossed.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 05-06-2010 06:40 AM

OK, here is my entry into the idiot of the day category.

I'm fighting with the binding on my quilt. I sewed it on the front and am using a decorative stitch from the front to sew the binding down in the back. There are about a zilion pins in this thing. Somehow, as I'm carrying this thing to the sewing machine my feet get all tangled up in the quilt and I end up on the floor with about 6 pins in my butt and the back of my legs. Yikes!

sharon b 05-06-2010 06:40 AM

Did you tell DD That you were using the fabric to make her a new quilt  LOL

It happens to the best of us , at least you can make the best of it. Keep us posted

She wanted me too use the black/white to make her a quilt now she wants a black/pink. Not to be mean but I hope the pink washes out so I can laugh at her.

oldswimmer 05-06-2010 06:47 AM

Oh Lisa, that hurts. I did that about a month ago. Got down on the floor to find a needle I dropped. Couldnt find it anywhere.... started to do something else, and about a 1/2 hour later my leg hurt to the side of my shin. I pulled up my jean leg, and guess what was there.... the needle, 1/2 way in my leg! I never even felt it go in, jut felt it when the pants moved it around!

Oh man, that sounds painful! I had to laugh though because a few weeks ago I turned to press something, got a little too close to the iron and just for a split second that hot iron got WAY too friendly with one of my "girls." It wasn't there long enough to cause any real damage but it scared me. It left a rather painful red mark but that went away after a few days.

OMG Rature, that sounds uber painful! I did something similar, but it was just my elbow...but let me tell you, it hurt! Got a blister and still isn't completely healed. Who knew that quilting could be so hazardous!

Did you put the pink in the dryer? If not, there's a Rit product that can take the dye out of something. I don't know if its been heat set though.

Pam 05-06-2010 07:03 AM

OK, THIS IS NOT A DISASTER! Take another look, NOW all of this stuff is perfectly color coordinated. This my dear is the gift horse you are not supposed to look in the mouth! Wash it all together again, you may loose the color, but if not, you are cruisin' making a fabulous pink and black quilt!

raptureready 05-06-2010 07:04 AM

Mine didn't even blister. The girls must get tougher with old age. LOL I also got the iron away VERY quickly. Do you think we could qualify for hazardous duty pay??? Between hot irons, pins, scissors and rotary cutters we take our lives in our own hands every time we consider a new pattern or project.

cjomomma 05-06-2010 07:12 AM

Ok the black/ white stayed black/ pink. So now I am rewashing what was white with the red again to try and even out the color on my new pink fabric.

Definitely! Hazardous duty pay in the form of fabric, or thread, or patterns.....or....hmmmm

bkb 05-06-2010 07:34 AM

only to some people!LOL

Baloonatic 05-06-2010 07:36 AM

cjomomma, what else would/should you have done? Use more color catchers? Ooohhhh, was that DIFFERENT fabric pieces, NOT one piece? Oooooo :p

bkb 05-06-2010 07:39 AM

can you imagine someone writing a paper on THE HAZARDS of QUILTING? 1. cut fingers 2. sewn fingers 3. New techniques for accupuncture. 4. Branding LOL That would be one crazy paper for sure.

It was 3 different pieces. 3 yards of each. I have decided I am gonna use them together in a quilt for my daughter. We will see if she laughs at me again.

Theresa 05-06-2010 07:49 AM

You ladies are soooo funny! 24 hours later and all is well.

The first time was a tired mistake. If you threw everything in together this time, it would definitely be a booby prize event! :)

Just read the last few posts. I meant to say "if you, once again, threw everything into the washer again....."

About a week ago, I posted that I'm reaching some ladies at work how to quilt. One of my first lessons was how to do it SAFELY! Reading these posts, I'm certainly on the right track.

In fact, true story... to save money, they all bought the beginner set by Fiskars... mat, ruler, rotary cutter. For safety reasons, I prefer the rotary cutters that are self-closing when you put them down, releasing the lever.

To demonstrate the difference between the two cutters, I asked to hold one of the cutters from the kit. Sure enough, thankfully before I opened the cutter, it went flying out of my hands, bouncing across the table. (Beware! the cutter in the kit is very smooth and is hard to grip tightly.) If I'd planned it, I couldn't have given a better lesson!!

Is there a doctor in the house? Sounds like we need one, now and then!!

Ouch! Sounds more like a cactus than a quilt.

cjomomma 05-06-2010 09:15 AM

sewnsewer2 05-06-2010 09:24 AM

I agree, put in a color catcher and wash it again.

Just so you all know rewashing didn't change anything and the color catchers were a pretty red too.

Oh, some art quilters use those, just a word to the wise. I do art quilts, but NOT the fabric catcher type.

JoAnnGC 05-06-2010 09:54 AM

Well, speaking of stupid, I had snagged a pretty piece of fabric from my DMIL's stash and decided that I should do a burn test on it to make sure that it was cotton and not a polyester blend. Unfortunately I forgot to drop the scrap of fabric that I was testing into the kitchen sink and ended up with a second-degree one-inch burn on my forearm. And of course this was made even worse by the fact that there was definitely poly in the fabric and I can't use it in the quilt I was planning.
