Who uses a Center ruler?

I was listening to the radio while sewing today and one of the commercials was about a tool they call a Center Ruler.
I had never heard of one, so I had to look it up online. The commercial mentioned it works well for quilting, which is what caught my attention. I'm including a link to a website so you can see what i'm talking about.
Does anyone use one or even heard of one?

Thanks for the website. I've never heard of them either - but I think I'm going to order one for my husband for Christmas.

deemail 12-01-2011 06:51 PM

it just starts at 0 in the middle and counts upward going both left and right...it helps you center things easily when you layer projects...fold each in half, mark the middle and then line up all the middle marks on the '0'....each edge should end up on the same left and right number and you will know you are all set... i made my own inexpensively by using cheap tape measures and sewing them onto the leaders of my quilt frame...

lalaland 12-01-2011 06:58 PM

I have a center measuring tape vs. the ruler, comes in real handy for all sorts of things.

sharon b 12-01-2011 08:00 PM

Lala where do you find a center measuring tape ? I need one of those :) LOL

BETTY62 12-01-2011 08:09 PM

I think I might need one of those. Thanks for sharing the website.

QuiltE 12-02-2011 06:34 AM

It's a wonder that someone hasn't made a quilter's centring square ruler!
It'd be handy when squaring up blocks ..... I often start with the centre point and measure outwards, squaring up with the points, so I'm sure not to cut them off, or leave too much!

mighty 12-02-2011 07:53 AM

I have a center measuring tape use it all the time.

grammy Dwynn 12-02-2011 08:08 AM

I have a Center tape measure 120" from Golden Threads ~
http://www.goldenthreads.com/shop/pr...easuring-tape/

Also have a 36" center Omnigrid ruler. I received it yrs ago at Puyallup, WA Sewing Expo as a 'hand out' for taking a class.

I have used both. The centering saves me calculating and figuring.

AnitaSt 12-02-2011 08:24 AM

I have a centering ruler and use it all the time. I bought it a few years ago in the drawing and drafting supplies area of Hobby Lobby. But I need that centering tape for bigger things!

Peckish 12-02-2011 08:56 AM

I'm not sure, but I think my friend Cindi has one on her longarm frame.

Nanamoms 12-02-2011 05:46 PM

I have a couple of small plastic ones that I use with my embroidery machine. One came in a Placement Kit and the other I got at the dealer I bought my machines from. With the plastic you have to be very careful how you store them because they bend easy.

JUNEC 12-02-2011 06:05 PM

I get the feeling this would be one more ruler I can find in my sewing room

Thanks for sharing this. I may have to buy one tape and one ruler. I think they would both help me when i'm trying to square up.

Kim Bohannon 12-02-2011 06:38 PM

I had never heard of center ruler, but think it is neet... could probably be made fairly easily, too

Jim 12-03-2011 12:07 AM

I use my shape cut .....works the same way...has opposing measurements on each side

mcar 12-03-2011 04:32 AM

Centering Ruler

I have one. I used it mostly when working in Graphic Design
where every segment had to be perfectly aligned before going to print.

blondeslave 12-03-2011 04:55 AM

That is one very cool tool. I drive myself crazy when I need to center something.

lindagor 12-03-2011 05:06 AM

Thanks for the link. I just ordered one for my husband for Christmas. I don't know if I'd ever borrow it for quilting, but who knows!

Drue 12-03-2011 05:13 AM

Why can't we just make our own "center tape"? Take a 120" tape measure and mark the 60" mark with a permanent marker and they you have it! I also have a 15" clear plastic ruler that I have done the same thing with. Works like a charm every time!

jad1044 12-03-2011 05:14 AM

I had never heard a name for it - and did not know they existed, but thought how unique if someone created something like this cause so many times I've come up to a point like this needing exactly something like this - love the idea!

Charleen DiSante 12-03-2011 05:19 AM

LOL, my 'center ruler' consists of measuring with my cloth tape measure and folding it in half then marking the spot. This is a neat tool, thanks for the website.

Thank you Valsma for sharing the information. I have never heard of the center tape measurer or ruler before. After watching the video from goldenthreads I think I should have one! Thanks Grammy Dwynn for sharing the information/website with us.

WoW. Great idea. I used a ruler like that when I was doing newspaper layouts. That was back in the day, after lino-type, but before computer layouts. We did wax paste up. I found it most helpful when I was wrapping text around a photo. I have a feeling that I'll be plundering through all my drafting supplies again in the near future to dig that out. I can see the value in using that tool for fussy cuts too.

hairquilt 12-03-2011 06:18 AM

Thanks so much for posting this-I just ordered a 18"-Sure will help me

Linda - K. 12-03-2011 10:07 AM

What a great idea. I used to be good at math but as I get older and lazy, this would be a good tool.

Mousie 12-03-2011 10:52 AM

ohhh, I'll have to go look. I think I have a shape cut. nifty idea!

Dee Dee 12-03-2011 11:20 AM

Thanks for posting this. Let us know if you order.

caspharm 12-03-2011 11:25 AM

I was just looking up several websites for that centering tape measure - everyone from quilts shops to Amazon has them for sale.

The centering ruler looks good for drafting patterns or squaring up quilts.

valsma 12-03-2011 11:43 AM

I have such a problem squaring up a quilt when I use my quilting rulers, I just can't seem to get it squared up easily, takes for ever. I can see either the tape or the ruler especially the long one helping a lot in reaching that goal quickly.

sewsecksy 12-03-2011 12:02 PM

I don't know if this is in reference quilting and embroidering. I was looking for this particular ruler and found it, it helps to put your embroidery design right in the middle and you can cut your square right away. Lets just be straight forward it is the best Fussy Cut Ruler. I got one as a gift for Me from Me. Here is the name of the site www.CraftyBev.com
Be sure to check out the video to and I got the Big Sister 3 in 1 Fussy Cut, and I even got my name engraved, great for classed ruler is not ever leaving without me.

Thanks Need one! LOL:thumbup:

patdesign 12-03-2011 04:49 PM

Have used one in the past, dont use it so much tho.

T-Anne 12-03-2011 07:56 PM

I have a center ruler and use it very often, I love it. Very helpful tool.

bearisgray 12-04-2011 04:52 AM

I have an old wooden yardstick with 0 in the center.

I can see where it would be helpful - but it isn't that big of a deal to me to use a regular ruler for centering.

I do find it helpful to use a number that ends with a zero as my starting point though.

ljs317 12-05-2011 05:43 AM

Hey I love it!

Wunder-Mar 12-05-2011 11:21 AM

I use one all the time for fussy cutting center squares for novelty blocks and for my needlework projects. www.craftybev.com has two sizes of center-finding rulers, depending on the size of your projects.

This is what my friend Cindi uses on her longarm. Not only does it help her make sure the quilt is centered, it also helps her ensure it stays straight as she rolls it. I gotta get one!

See how she has the pink markers on the tape lined up with the corners of the blocks:
