I've been watching the Missouri Star Quilt tutorials on YouTube and they had a lot of things with the jellyrolls and pre-cut and packaged deals like that. I was wondering who on here buys the jellyrolls and such and what you have made with them.

ruth c 11-12-2010 07:45 AM

I've wonder the same thing. I've never used them.

Baysidegal 11-12-2010 07:49 AM

I use charm packs all the time. I am working on a dresdan plate using charm packs purchased from Missouri Quilting and using their video tutorial as a guide. It is so easy so far.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 11-12-2010 07:49 AM

I've done a bowtie quilt with charm packs. Each charm makes one bowtie with just a tiny bit of waste and it allowed me to have many more fabrics than I would have otherwise.

I have the 1930's repro charms that I plan to do a dresden plate with soon.

There are lots of ideas on the Moda Bakeshop website.....

I've made regular quilt tops using just strips and recently I used the pattern "Strip Search" to make a Halloween quilt. Charm packs are useful for table runners because you have a variety of beautiful fabrics.

gale 11-12-2010 08:22 AM

I've done 3 quilt tops with jelly rolls. One was from a magazine pattern that was made for a jelly roll. One was the boxy stars pattern at quiltville (it was a quilt along) and one was a non jelly roll pattern from a magazine that I worked up in Electric Quilt to use a jelly roll.

SherriB 11-12-2010 08:31 AM

I have made several quilt tops with charm packs, jelly rolls and turnovers and one with a layer cake. I love to use the charm packs and make tumbler quilts. And 4 patch and 9 patch are perfect for charms. I have used turnovers to make pinwheel quilts. I have a Mary Englebright pinwheel ready to be put together. The honeybuns don't seem to go as far in a quilt top, more like a small lap size quilt. I made a hexagon quilt top from a layer cake that needs to be quilted someday.

Flying_V_Goddess 11-12-2010 08:35 AM

I'm amazed by how much you can do with these things. I saw a video on Missouri Star Quilts with one of the dessert rolls and she showed how she was able to make 4 table runners and a table topper (no including the borders). I didn't think you could do much with just of one them.

BMP 11-12-2010 08:44 AM

I love the ideas that they offer but since I have the time right now I prefer to choose my own style of fabric and to cut my own , its so much more cost effective.
If I had unlimited funds and no time I probably would buy some of them.

Mona Marie 11-12-2010 08:51 AM

I do my own. I have a lot of small pieces so cut them as I need them and how many I need, etc.

Connie in CO 11-12-2010 09:47 AM

I made a Twister with a Charm pack.It had all of one collection of fabric.I didn't know that collection had so many different prints.

sew_southern 11-12-2010 10:54 AM

I've done a lap quilt using rail fence blocks from a jelly roll. One lap quilt using jacobs ladder blocks & a tumbler block wallhanging from charm packs. I love the charms, cakes & rolls. :)

sunflower126 11-12-2010 10:56 AM

Love both charm packs and jelly rolls. Charma packs make quick lap quilts, baby quilts, tote bags, placemats etc. Just finished a bed runner using a jelly roll. Enough left for a jelly roll tote bag or table runner, dresser runner. Let you imagination be your guide.

plainpat 11-12-2010 11:00 AM

I haven't bought them, but received several jelly rolls & charms as gifts. I like making table toppers with the charms & sometimes use the jelly rolls as borders on miniatures.

One of the jelly rolls I purchased had 3 1/2 yds of fabric in it.
So yes, you can make several projects out of them :D:D:D

Quiltforme 11-12-2010 12:23 PM

I bought a book that tells you waht to do with them does that count :)!!

tuesy 11-12-2010 12:42 PM

I love making things with these. They're so easy to use. I just bought some layer cakes as well to go with some jellies I also bought.

 Yes, it counts! I have a couple books as well. :)

zactanls 11-12-2010 03:26 PM

I belong to a strip club that uses 2 1/2" strips to make quilts. We use jelly rolls all the time. A good book that we have made several out of is Scrap Basket Surprise.

Boscobd 11-12-2010 06:40 PM

I have several charm packs all with cottagy florals that I really like but could never figure out what to make. I have decided to make a scrappy quilt by just stitching them together as I pick them out of a bag. I also plan on tying this quilt. I've never tied a quilt before, but am really intrigued by it. I think it'll be really pretty and old-fashioned looking.

nantucketsue 11-13-2010 03:07 AM

I purchased some minky charm squares recently and made a small rag quilt for my granddaughter, backed with a piece of flannel, as demonstrated in Missouri Quilts. She loves it.

finch 11-13-2010 03:47 AM

I really love them both.Everything is color coordinated and ready to go.They can be expensive though, but I really shop around to find a good bargain.I have found the same ones at Walmart that they had at JoAnns, at a lower price.

Joeysnana 11-13-2010 04:52 AM

I am just getting back into sewing and have no stash. I love the precuts. I made a Chinese coin lap quilt with the charm packs; pinwheels using MSQC's video; 4 patch using charm packs; sewing machine cover using jelly roll; placemats and table runners using jelly rolls and charm packs. The list just goes on and on..... love my precuts!

scrapykate 11-13-2010 04:59 AM

I love the charms and jelly rolls. Have done several quilts using both. Have a layer cake that I am going to make a snowball quilt with as well. I do like to pick my own fabric so am picky about what precuts I buy.

laura59 11-13-2010 06:02 AM

I've used the charm packs to make placemats and table runners.

steelecg 11-13-2010 06:02 AM

I have used them for baby quilts and love the concept - I also love Missouri Quilt Company

dorilou58 11-13-2010 06:09 AM

I love the Missouri Star site and buy charm packs and love the tutorials..Its so much easier for me to watch someone make something than just to read a diagram..The Dresdern pattern looked so hard until I watched the tutorian on it and it looks so much easier..I will try to do it soon...The charm packs I bought came in just a couple of days and I was happy with the colors in it...

Gatormom3 11-13-2010 06:16 AM

I have made multiple placemats and table runners using both jelly rolls and charm packs. They allow you to use a variety of coordinating fabrics painlessly. They are especially good for beginning quilters like me.

pkary 11-13-2010 06:19 AM

I use jelly rolls for any pattern that uses longish strips or pieces not more than 2.5" in height. I do a lot of "scrap" quilting and the rolls are a perfect size for cutting small squares or triangles which are my preference. I use the charm packs for the same scrap quilts, frequently cutting them even smaller. I love the assortment of colors you get in each jelly roll or scrap pack and they are usually sold along side yardage of the same fabrics.

That is what I do as well--I bag them and when I want to do something (like the 10-minute blocks) I don't have to do anything but grab a bag and start sewing.

pieces 11-13-2010 06:57 AM

I have never bought charm packs, jelly rolls, etc.
Personally I would rather buy yardage. I believe the precut fabrics are more expensive. Buying yardage allows me to add to my stash.

acjacques 11-13-2010 06:58 AM

I buy charm packs because they are good fillers when you just need a small piece (less than 5"), the jelly rolls are also great when making quilts that are meant to be (ab)used, such as a baby quilt. I used to buy fabrics by the yard, then realized that when I want to make another project none of the leftovers are the right colors that I need, so now I just buy fat quarters or linear quarters. Besides when you buy the pre-cuts, the patterns and colorways are already coordinated so there's hardly any need to go through the fabric bolts trying to match colors.

born2quilt 11-13-2010 07:02 AM

I found a pattern called Shadow Square Quilt by Key West Sunshine Due Designs that uses charm packs. You sew a dark strip to one side and the bottom and it gives an illusion of a shadow. Makes a really cute quilt.

I have been a little leery of pre-cuts because I have read of some uneven cuts causing waste. Has anyone experienced this?

Numa 11-13-2010 07:17 AM

I often use charm packs. If I find them at a good price or a design that I like, they make great lap quilts and bay quilts that go together quickly. I also buy layer cakes sometimes and recut them. Out of one layer cake, I have made 2 large baby quilts and have enough for one more. Just need a baby girl to make one for.

Numa 11-13-2010 07:18 AM

That baby quilts, not bay quilts! Duh!

Rettie V. Grama 11-13-2010 08:07 AM

I use Charm Packs for a lot of things and fat quarters for matching fabric in a block. 2 fat quarters will usually make 3/4 blocks, depending on the pattern.

Rettie V. Grama 11-13-2010 08:11 AM

I like the drunkards path going in circles.

BeckiQuilts 11-13-2010 08:42 AM

So far, the sweetest flannel quilt I have made was with a wonderful layer cake I found in Hattiesburg , MS. There is a darling LQS there. I live in Alabama and visit our son in LA. often. I try to "Trick" my DH by saying, Oh let's plan to eat lunch in Hattiesburg! Works every time. This layer cake was in "man's" cloth, and was for my SIL. Since then, I have been hooked on precuts. The best thing to do is to find a LQS that has great ideas on combinations.
