Whole Cloth - the real thing!
1 Attachment(s)
Ladies and Gentlemen ....
As some of you know I have been practicing my FMQ, and doing mini whole cloth quilts. I am now going to do the REAL DEAL!!!! I'm so pumped! I bought muslin fabric in a "cream". It's 75x75 (no mini LOL, but not massive) I saw it on pintereste: https://timquilts.files.wordpress.co...7/dscn3242.jpg and fell in love with it. I have the same stencil for the middle, but not the border stencil ... but I have lots of those! Here's my layout: I hope you can see the blue! I plan on doing stipple in the middle and then from the bigger "circle" to the border doing 1/2 inch grid (not sure if I will do cross hatch or just square). And then stipple in the border around the stencil. If you have other "filling" ideas instead of a grid, please feel free! Thanks so looking, I'll be posting my progress on this thread And ... A Huge thanks to all the people who have given me so much information, advice and suggestions ... all are welcome and so much appreciated! |
This will be spectacular!
TBH ... I don't think you need idea/suggestions! You are pretty incredible with them, on your own. Another weekend's project? :) |
I agree with QuiltE! The on point crosshatch will be the perfect fill for all those feathers. Labor intensive but worth it. They make painters tape in 1/2" so you won't have to tediously mark them out. And stop them about 1/4 from the feather motifs and stitch over to your new c/h line, they will form a lovely echo around both the border and the center medallion. This is what they did in the pinterest pic you linked and you can see how much it emphasizes the overall design. Looking forward to following your progress on this.

Yours will be beautiful!!!!!!!!! I have no doubt.

I’ve been following your progress. You do beautiful work. I’m sure this will be lovely too. How ironic that tonight I was reading through my new AQS Sept 2018 magazine and towards the back was an interesting and informative article by Margaret Solomon Gunn on The Art of the Symmetrical Whole Cloth Quilt. I don’t know if I’ll ever make one but I learned a lot from it. Nice pictures too.
|
I am sure your whole cloth will be gorgeous. You are very ambitious.
|
I always enjoy your posts and am confident you’re going to do a fabulous job (as always) on your whole cloth quilt. I’ll keep my eyes open for photos of your progress. It sounds like you’re enjoying the FMQ journey...
|
Wow - That will be gorgeous!
|
Can’t wait to see the finished product!
|
That is going to be a beautiful quilt. It's fun to watch your progress. You are certainly gaining new skills in the quilting adventure.
|
This is going to be stunning xx
|
Kudos for spreading your wings and moving into such a beautiful art form. I can't wait to see the finished quilt.
|
I think your design looks good so far. I hope you have tried the red marker before and it will come out. :-/. Just remember whole cloth quilts are quilted very densely. I am looking forward to seeing your post when you have finished quilting it.
Edit: I forgot to ask.....are you using two layers of batting to give the unquilted areas (feathers) “poof”? A wool batting on the top layer works so well to do this. |
Oh, Marion I so look forward to following your post/progress. Your "practice" pieces were gorgeous so I can't imagine anything but a beautiful outcome on this quilt.
|
That is going to be stunning! I would be too chicken to try it. Kudos to you my friend.

I've been using crayola kids washable markers (thanks Ube!), and they have been awesome! I hadn't thought of using two layers of batting, I'll give it a test run and see what I think - thanks for the suggestion. |
Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments and encouragement, I'm having lots of fun with FMQ now that I've finally figured it out!

That’s going to be gorgeous!

I envy your patience, your bravery, your persistence, and your past demonstrations of your skill. Can't wait to see it on this one.
|
I don't think that a whole cloth quilt needs to be densely quilted any more thab any other design. IMHO it is the pattern that makes the quilting shine, not necessarily dense quilting.

Spectacular work!! I have loved watching your whole cloth journey from the small practice projects to this beauty. You should be very proud of yourself!!
|
That is stunning! I appreciate your sharing your journey because you are so encouraging. I especially like your 'can do' approach to your developing new skill set. I really want to do one of these whole cloth quilts. Because of you, I think it has moved way up on the 'bucket list'. Your work is fantastic for sure. I, like others, am anxious to see more.
