Yup. That makes even more sense.
Although theoretically one could quilt from the top with the pins underneath, removing them as you go, I think the major problem would be if you miss a pin. Once your machine is very close to the pin, it would be impossible to remove it from the back without taking the quilt from under the presser foot. I think it's mostly an issue of preventing a problem while quilting, ounce of prevention, that kind of thing.....
