I just made a boo boo and I double posted on a reply and I was wondering why this isn't set up to delete our own mistakes, instead I feel like an IDIOT double posting. Does someone have an answer for me?

okiepastor 03-24-2011 12:33 PM

cant figure out how it happened--first time this am!

QuiltnCowgirl 03-24-2011 12:38 PM

A lot of message boards do not have a delete option. While it sounds like a simple option to have in the case of a double post I have seen it misused.

An example: A thread gets a little heated or controversial, posts get snippy, and then someone who was especially snippy will delete their post, come out smelling like a rose, while everyone else who responded in defense or offense to the deleted post look like crazy people. And then the posts go wild all over again because of that.

So, the simple solution on a lot of message boards? No deleting except by administrators or moderators.

okiepastor 03-24-2011 12:41 PM

thank you for the explanation--had not thought of it that way!

EasyPeezy 03-24-2011 12:42 PM

No need to feel stupid. It can happen to all of us. Send a PM to one of the
moderators. They will be happy to delete it for you.

You are welcome :)

I'm the second idiot on this board! I double posted twice in a row a couple of days ago...don't know how it happened. It's my laptop's fault...I think.

thequiltmama 03-24-2011 12:57 PM

I don't think anyone looks like an idiot for double posting. When I see that I think....computer trouble. So no worries, we have all done it. :)

LivelyLady 03-24-2011 12:59 PM

I've done that and will be watching this thread...hopefully there is a trick to being able to delete a double post.

Shelbie 03-24-2011 01:00 PM

I made my first double post yesterday. As I didn't think to ask Admin to delete it, I went back into the duplicate with the edit button, erased my message and wrote another completely different sentence. I figured that way it would just look like I'd had another idea about the topic and wouldn't appear as a double post. It worked for me.

greensleeves 03-24-2011 01:07 PM

I just edit and say Oops. :) Happens a lot to a lot of us.

This makes a lot of sense to me now....I never thought of that. Thankyou everyone for your answers!

I 'stutter' (hit enter twice very fast) and double post occasionally. I just clear it and say 'oops!' too.

On another board I go to that happens all the time. Posters have gotten into the habit of quoting at least the original post (because often the OP will delete when they don't get the responses they wanted) and sometimes other inflammatory posts because inevitably, the poster will come along and delete. And yes it makes for a very confusing conversation. :hunf: Most boards I go to also only allow editing for a set period of time. So you can quickly edit if you make a typo but you can't go and change things after several people have replied.

Allow me to introduce myself.

My name is PatriceJ.

I am a member of the OOOPS!-I-Hit-Send-Twice! Club.

I have renewed my membership more often that i care to admit.

No matter. I know I am in very good company. The Club Meetings are a blast.

of course ... they take twice as long as normal meetings because we constantly repeat ourselves.

gale 03-24-2011 01:42 PM

But PatriceJ, you have no problem deleting your own duplicate posts right? so there's no evidence...

Jennifer22206 03-24-2011 01:51 PM

I've done it a few times. Mainly when I'm posting from my cell phone, and others when my DD hits the enter button on the keyboard faster than I can stop her.

No worries.

I never ever think idiot person. I always think stupid computer. Sometimes you can hit the send button and the stupid computer makes you think it's not doing anything while behind your back it posted your message. So then you hit send again and it laughs at you.

you were not supposed to point that out.

kwendt 03-24-2011 03:28 PM

That was a good explanation there of the reason why. Hadn't thought of it either.

When I do a double post. I just go back and 'edit' the 2nd one. I delete all the text and replace it with a . or a (sorry, double post). So at least it's not cluttering up too much.

BeeNana 03-24-2011 03:36 PM

I have had such a good laugh.
We can say that we are having a PICNIC= Problem In Chair Not In Computer!

SueDor 03-25-2011 03:40 AM

I have deleted my second posting, going to the edit and deleting that posting and sending it. Doesn't get posted.

olebat 03-25-2011 04:45 AM

The club chair is a great delete button. (Thanks Patrice) I'm also in the edit, delete contents, update chapter.

When this has happened to me, I simply go in, delete all of the words through the "EDIT" button and it is gone. You may still end up with an Avatar, but the message part will be empty.

P.S. Sorry, didn't read all the posts before I sent the same suggestion others had.

featherweight 03-25-2011 06:43 AM

Yes, that very thing has happened to me to. Then I think everyone is saying, That women must have double-clicked on the send... But, really I didn't. I am sure we are not the only ones this has happened to.

matraina 03-25-2011 08:36 AM

I've double posted a lot. Could never find a way to delete. Will have to try the "edit" suggestion. What happens to me is that, usually the post goes up right away. Sometimes I can't remember whether I hit "send" because I don't see it right away, so I think I didn't hit "send" and hit it again. Then I see both of them there.

Good thinking! I commend your creativity!

I love the PICNIC acroynym!!!

Becky Crafts 03-25-2011 10:20 AM

Have you tried going to edit, backing over the whole note, then hitting your backspace button? I've found that works ok for me.

Marysewfun 03-25-2011 10:50 AM

I have seen messages (as of late) come up "Locked" -

What is that used for?

My laptop does the same thing to me. 8-)

My time 03-25-2011 02:59 PM

Ditto I've double posted several time. It's embarrassing but hey, welcome to my world.lol.

#1piecemaker 03-25-2011 04:26 PM

Do it all the time myself. I just get in too big a hurry for it to show up so I hit it again.

yellowsnow55 03-25-2011 08:32 PM

Happens sometimes when you leave your finger 4 too long on the send button, no harm done, so don't worry about it. We've all done it at least once.❤

an accidental double-post is not a rules violation. it causes no harm at all to the board or to the topic.

please don't worry if it happens to you. we'd rather you left it alone than rush in to delete the words in the extra post.

when they're left alone, we all know what happened. when we encounter self-edited posts that leave nothing but blank space, it looks a lot more strange than two of the same.

we fix the ones we find. we don't worry about the ones we miss. life's too short.

Linda1 03-26-2011 05:45 AM

I think I have done it twice this week. I believe it is because I hit the back arrow button got distracted, saw the message and thought I hadn't hit send. I hit send and there it is, same message posted twice.
