Our homes are filled with all kinds of appliances , washers , refigerators , mixers... you name it .... if any one of them needed to be replaced I would be upset about the expense , but the idea of having one of my sewing machines being at the end of its useful life just hits so hard. Its not the expense of a new machine ... but something else ..... So why so much attachment ?
Is this odd? , should I book time on the "couch".

tsnana2000 10-31-2011 04:52 PM

I think it's because we use it to create something special. And for a lot of us it helps us keep our sanity. lol

familyfun 10-31-2011 04:54 PM

washers , refigerators , mixers.

These just seem like WORK to me...
cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, cooking, cooking, and more cleaning..
Sewing is FUN.

Maia B 10-31-2011 04:55 PM

Probably hormonal. I'll bet there's a dopamine or prolactin release.

Think about how emotional a craft quilting and sewing are. Sometimes it goes much farther than ART. I have upgraded sewing machines 3 times..and I keep them all because I'm attached. The good thing is my youngest is wanting to sew and I will pass on my Pfaff 6120 to her...It still sews like a dream after 15 years of Love and abuse. =)

athomenow 10-31-2011 04:58 PM

I feel the same way. I'm actually dreading the day my beloved #1 plus dies because I know she can't be fixed. They aren't making parts for her any more. So having said that I tell her every day how much I love her and to hang in there with me!
Yeah I have a problem. Scoot over on that couch.

JenniePenny 10-31-2011 05:04 PM

I don't feel that way. And I must add that I am sentimental in other regards.

raptureready 10-31-2011 05:05 PM

I think it's because those other things are appliances which translates as work. A sewing machine is a tool of ultimate self expression. It's our phychiatrist, therapist and sometimes our best friend. There's a definate emotional attachment to them.

SuziC 10-31-2011 05:09 PM

They are our BEST FRIENDS!!

ChaiQuilter 10-31-2011 05:16 PM

My machine is my favorite thing in the house - not including DH, of course!

Mariposa 10-31-2011 05:20 PM

It's definitely a therapy thing!! The sewing machines help us to express our creativity, and de-stress. (at least for me!) :)

Lyncat 10-31-2011 05:28 PM

My grandma gave me a Singer when I graduated from high school. 20 years later I traded it in at a dealer for a newer one to sew my sisters wedding gown. A few hours later I went to the dealer and asked if I could buy it back. He told me he was expecting me...he could tell I was emotionally attached.

Murphy 10-31-2011 05:29 PM

I think this is exactly why. This machine helps us fulfill our creative side and we can make beautiful, practical and comforting items with it.

jaciqltznok 10-31-2011 05:44 PM

uumm//they are an attachment to our arms aren't they??

they clear out minds...they sooth our souls...they calm our nerves...oh wait..that is wine....no chocolate...oh well heck all of the above..hehehe

deedum 10-31-2011 05:53 PM

Yea, it is a real close and personal thing. The thrill I get when I sit down with my old machine, it is like visiting a very dear friend, almost like going back in time!So surreal!

DogHouseMom 10-31-2011 05:57 PM

I have to say that I love my new shower far more than any of my sewing machines.

But I love my sewing machine a LOT more than I like my alarm clock!! Heck, I like my husbands circular saw better than my alarm clock.

MissM 10-31-2011 06:01 PM

Not at all. It's because it is something you name, touch, talk to and spend many hours with. Your machine becomes a part of you, or like having a sister, or a best friend. So it only stands to reason if they become ill, it causes distress.

knlsmith 10-31-2011 06:06 PM

Its the same thing I feel for my Hummer that I drive everyday. But my 1st love is my 95 Camaro convertible that lives under a cover in our garage most of the time.

We don't have to share our machines with anyone. They don't talk back (well sometimes the is "tension" in the room!) Lol. And we can create master pieces with our own hands.

wvdek 10-31-2011 06:28 PM

My machine is all mine, I chose it, I paid for it, it calms me, it soothes me, it helps me create, it is an extension of my arms and hands and me...

hannajo 10-31-2011 08:02 PM

For me, it's more practical than sentimental. It's overwhelming to use a new machine with things even slightly rearranged. Also, there might be different/new features to figure out. I just have more of a rhythm with a familiar machine.

liminanc 11-01-2011 02:46 AM

So I guess I am the only one who also loves some of my other appliances, lol. Anything that works great and makes my life easier I get attached to.

jeanneb52 11-01-2011 02:58 AM

Because it's my baby. Aren't you attached to your babies?

jitkaau 11-01-2011 02:59 AM

Breaking in a new one is time consuming.

sewcrafty 11-01-2011 03:08 AM

For me, I cried when my 6600 melted. All the things I've made for people, were in progress for people, etc. Much love came from my machine for others.

Buttons922 11-01-2011 03:12 AM

I agree we create with our babies....but it is ours, something we spend our time with, think, solve home, and all the national problems with and it doesn't spred a single rumor.

MsLoriAnn 11-01-2011 03:16 AM

Sewing is a pleasure; it's therapy. A happy place to be and fiber is good for us.

Lori

Do you sit and smile while using these appliances? When was the last time you sat and watched your freezer freeze a piece of meat? Besides, you don't create their results, they do.

fabric_fancy 11-01-2011 03:30 AM

i have been thru some difficult times with the loss of my child and my sewing machine has helped me thru some of my darkest day.

for me, the loss of the machine would be like losing a friend that has dried away many of my tears.

lurag 11-01-2011 04:42 AM

I had my Singer sewing machine for thirty years and I never had any problems with it until it just could not be fixed it was wore out. I could not get rid of it, I had my daughter take it and get rid of it. I have never had another sewing machine as good as that one yet.

nannya54 11-01-2011 04:44 AM

Don't you suppose that it's because being creative is therapeutic, in itself. While I sit and sew, I also think about other events in my life, sometimes present, sometimes past and those emotions are then transferred into our project. The sewing machine is the vehicle that enables that to happen. Men get attached to their vehicles for the same reasons. Our machine enable us to produce fun or beauty or silliness. We're intimate with it on an emotional scale.

TexasSunshine 11-01-2011 04:48 AM

I am attached to my Pfaff bought new in 1986. I think it is also because you know that machine so well, every sound, every detail. I dread when something happens to it. I do take care of it.

Val in IN 11-01-2011 04:53 AM

I think that I'm the weird one here... I am not only attached to my machines (all 5 of them) but I couldn't imagine life without some of my other non-sewing things. Example(s): Kitchen-aid mixer, crockpot, toaster/convection oven, laptop, Nook, android cell phone, Food Saver vacuum sealer (use this one EVERYDAY to re-seal cereal, potato chips etc) Keurig coffee maker....list goes on and on and on :-)

Tinabodina 11-01-2011 04:55 AM

Our machines are our creative outlet and for me, my time on the couch. Over the years she has paid for many visits without me leaving the house. :D

I agree! I talk to my machine. Do you?

Iowa Grandma 11-01-2011 05:17 AM

Your sewing machine is yours and yours alone so of course you are attached. Everyone else uses all the other appliances also so you don't get attached. It is like I have a "love, hate" relationship with mine. Love it when things are going well and hate it when I mess up.

Oh yeah !!! and after a day of working with truck drivers (who think they know it all !!LOL), that wonderful sewing machine that will help me forget about the worries of the world and let me make something and be proud of it (even if the stitches are uneven LOL).
Hmmmm.. wonder if Dr. Freud would have a prognosis for that one ? LOL

annthreecats 11-01-2011 05:35 AM

None of the other appliances in my house get the attention my sewing machines do, because I don't spend as much close up time with them. My sewing machines help me create beautiful things to use and display. I only hand sew when necessary. If I can do it on the machine, I will. I love all my sewing machines.
