If you combine a charm square with a pieced unit made up of other charm squares, like half square triangles, 4 patches, etc, you will need to cut the full ones down to match the size of the pieced units. The pieced units will be smaller because of the seam allowance. It all depends on the pattern if you need to trim them to a smaller size or not and what that new size will be. I really don't think it has anything to do with pinked edges.

Thank you all, this is the answer I needed. Guess I have had a brain freeze or something, I knew it was related to math.

I just bought the Brother sacnncut machine, and it cuts perfect blocks of any size (with a quarter inch seam marked on the back of the fabric) l. Its amazing, no more precuts for me and perfect 1/4 inch seams if you sew on the marked line.

if your pattern calls for 4 1/2 in. cuts then you would cut them down. But if it calls for 5 in. they wouldn't need cut down.Use a different pattern.
