Why I make scrappies I think.
I just love scrappy quilts and the thought crossed my mind why! I am free, free to pick whatever color I want, to start and stop on the project without any ado. I don't have to think, worry about the pattern or anything. I can be As creative as the mood takes me. I am so much of a free spirit on my off time. At work, I am very structured, hard working and hold myself very accountable and don't take excuses lightly.., at home in my own little sewing room, In my own little chair, I can be whatever I want to be!
I think the scrappies, just ooze love, warmth and comfort!! Why do you like scrappies? |
I love scrappies because they bring back the feeling of long ago, when family was a the most important thing. Quilts were made with scraps from clothing, and were functional...I hate to see a quilt I made not being used...Scrappies are the mac and cheese of bedding!
Scrappy quilts seem to have more warmth and feeling than a "coordinated" quilt.
I love scrappies for the same reasons. The freedom they give you. They are warm and cosy and thrifty too. They remind me of older times when everything was used to make something lovely and useful.
I like them because they remind me of my grandmothers quilts. She was the only one in my family who made quilts. Sadly none of them survived my relatives just throwing them away when she died. I love making them also. Makes me happy
I love scrappies, they can be frugal, fun and forgiving!
I like the idea that I'm using "leftovers"--plus, they force me to be somewhat creative with "what I've got". The end result is always functional and often quite pretty. :)
My DH says that scrappies are "real" quilts. (sorta like our oldest saying a garden with fruits and veggies is a "real" garden.)
I like "most" of them and that's all I have made so far being a beginner quilter.
The main reason is that I had no clue on how much fabric to buy when I learned, and I had to continuously go and buy some more which (of course) was not the same that I already had so I had to be inventive. Plus, I wanted to learn of lot and did not want to do the same block over and over for one big quilt. Now, I just finished piecing my third ever quilt and, as justflyingin wrote, it uses leftovers and I know that I could not create anything if I had to much leftovers in my way, so I try to use them as much as I can. That being said, I am into genealogy and my ancestors history etc so to me, scrappies is along the same line: the way my ancestors made quilts that's what I am intersted in learning |
i think scrappies are my favorites. so reminiscent of my childhood at my aunt's house.
I make a lot of scrappy. i have even cut up regular fabric. i just love them
I grew up sleeping under them and I love the coziness...makes me feel loved and safe. Best of all I feel my grandmother's nearness and I like how they look!
what a lovely way to put into words, what I have been feeling for years. Thanks I hope I can find this again on the days I'm feeling like a bum for using up my scraps.
I love a scrappy best of all.
I love the memories of a scrap quilt. Each fabric was from a project I did and I remember the fun making the "other" quilt and for whom I made it. A little trip down memory lane and I feel the love I have for quilting and the one receiving the quilt each night as I fall alseep.
I love scrappies because I like to use up "extra" fabric. I guess it makes me feel better about how much I spend for planned quilts. I also like them because I usually don't try to match fabrics. I just pick a pattern and start cutting, and whatever happens, happens. And yet they always look great. It always surprises me how fabrics that shouldn't go together end up looking great together.
I wanted to learn to quilt after spreading out a quilt that my grandmother made and listening to my dad say, "That's George's shirt, Mama made an apron out of that one, that was my favorite shirt ...". They were all gone when he told me about the fabrics, but the memories lived on in that quilt. I don't use clothing to make my quilts, but my scrappy quilt gave me the same feeling. I could see the quilts I had made for other people in the quilt. I saw a scrap from Emily's quilt, one from my DGD's quilt, one from my son's quilt ... AND there were no rules and no seams that absolutely had to match unless I chose to match them.

When I make planned quilts I seem to end up with a lot more scraps than pieces big enough to use in another planned quilt, so using up my scraps is always enjoyable. The majority of quilts I have made in my 5 years of quilting have been scrappy, and as I'm far from great at getting points to match up, I find scrappies are very forgiving.
I love scrappy quilts! Mostly I use them as donations, but I am currently making one for my Granddaughter. It is in all girly colors and I'm doing it in 2 1/2"squares, sewing it to 12pieces X 12 squares...so as I gather the scraps I am putting them into the pieces....when I have enough, will join all the smaller squares.
I like them because I hate to throw anything away.............calla
I agree with Deedum - doing a scrappy is easier and more relaxing as there is less to think bout and you can just enjoy sewing. I like to do crumbs because there is less thought, very easy and the results always look great! - just like putting a puzzle together.
I love scrappies for so many of the reasons given previously. I love seeing fabrics that have become part of other quilts, I love the variety of directions the fabrics take in new quilts. I love the freedom of trying new blocks and then putting them together. I like variety and sometimes quilts are repetative in making the same block over and over. If it is with different fabric that helps change it up as you see the block come together. I also like that when I don't want to sew, I can cut scraps into pieces for a scrappy. Right now I have a nice box full of 2 inch pieces that will be a scrappy around the world someday. I love fabric and scrappies are just another form of play and creativity.
I love them because for some reason, people aren't afraid to USE them. They don't put them away to never see the light of day, but feel they can be genuinely used, which is what I want.
Scrap quilts for me are enchanting. It amazes me how each and every piece of fabric fits in perfectly. When I began to get interested in quilt making I was generously given fabric by several people who were no longer going to be quilting because of medical reasons and so began my journey with nothing but scraps. I very seldom buy fabrics unless at a garage sale. I also think that working with scraps takes away some of the tension, they are meant to be used for love and enjoyment.

All of the above plus just love all the colors. Color is what quilting is all about for me. One other reason is the way I buy fabric. I very rarely buy enough fabric to complete a color planned quilt, so even if am cutting yardage rather than using scraps, I use a lot of different fabrics.
My mom's cousin taught me how to sew cloths. She used the scraps for quilts. As my children were growing up and I made their cloths I saved the scraps to "someday" make a quilt. I recently made scrap quilts for my 2 oldest and each of them recognized fabrics from the past in them. I am always receiving scraps from people who no longer sew. I have a sister who makes cloths and always threw away the scraps. Now she saves them for me. She's not wasting and it is free for me.
I think people are more inclined to use a scrappy quilt rather than "saving" it for "special" use. They don't feel "guilty" if it gets worn out. |
I love scrappies too, and for a lot of the same reasons as you, deedum!
At work I am a programmer so as you can imagine...lots of precision, lots of rules, lots of details that must be explored, tested, documented... In my sewing room....sometimes I bring that focus and precision to bear, and other times....it's scrappy funtime!! Plus I like to buy lots of small pieces of fabric....fabric that I "can't live without" but can't afford the space (or dollars) to buy six yards at a whack. I treat myself to fat quarters and half-yards all the time so I have a huge variety of small pieces of fabric...perfect for scrappy quilts! Right now my favorite quilt is a scrappy made from the bits and pieces left over from all of the quilts I made as Christmas gifts for my family last year. I love looking at it because each piece makes me think of a specific quilt and the person I made it for. It's like a mental family reunion! LOL |
What I see in these first 3 pages of reasons why people make scrappy quilts is a lot of quilters who have something inside them screaming to get out. Repeatedly responders said things about the freedom, the colors w/o "matching", the memories (both real from recognized fabric, or remembered because of the variety of fabrics). I think those of you who enjoy scrappy quilts are ready to fly in new directions, dare to quilt w/o patterns, experiement and if you don't like it, give it to a charity (someone will like it!). Too many of us are stuck on "patterns". Time to let go and DO your thing!
I'm new to quilting but scrappy are my favorite because of the freedom of no pattern.

I am with you. I just love scrappies.

Love doing a scrappy quilt, they just make me happy.

I love em all. But I had an eye opener a while back. I had always made pattern quilts and I really like them, I no longer like the BOM - I think I've tried about every block out there. Anyway I had made a planned scrappy it was so much fun - 6 strips sewn/cut into sqares/cut square diag/put together and you have a light and dark going on.
My daughter (40's) was over and I wanted her to have a quilt and she wanted one. So I pulled out all my quilts and the one she picked out of all my very planned/precise quilts was the scrappy! So lesson learned - the other 3 kids all did about the same thing. Son picked out a flannel raggy - go figure. I do like a planned quilt so now most of my quilts are scrappy but with a plan - and they are a lot of fun. |

I don't think I could duplicate even what I create if I tried cause my mind just does not work that way. I see it in my mind and I start sewing, slashing and/or cutting it all after I sew and recreate it many times. |
I like scrappies too because I can follow my own ideas and I will probably never get 2 the same, they are bright and I think of the original reason why people got the make their quilts, was with scraps of other things - dresses, pyjamas, shirts, etc..... Not to say I don't like the other kind of quilts, I admire them too but I don't suppose I will ever buy a pattern to make a quilt, I follow my own heart :) Happy quilting to you all!!!!
I much rather sew a scrappy anytime. Even the quilts I make by a pattern have a scrappy element to them ( ex. Turning twenty).
I also love scrappy quilts for all of the above reasons. I also like them because I do not have to "think" too hard about the color choices. They always come out very nice and very colorful!
