Valium can give you unpleasant lasting effects and quilting gives you a pleasant high, that you don't want to lose.

Or during! You may come up with a really cool new design!

Either one is addicting but at least you have something to show for your time when you quilt!

Lyn4ty 05-15-2010 02:06 PM

Valium won't keep you warm on a cold winter's night, but a beautiful quilt will!

How do you think I quit smoking almost 3 years ago now? Quilting and visiting this board......that's how. It will be better than valium too.....you'll see!

RuthiesRetreat3 05-15-2010 03:34 PM

Because you can share your "dose" with your friends, without shorting your own "dose".

chris_quilts 05-15-2010 03:36 PM

because you can leave your quilt stuff out laying around without DH having too big a fit about the meds being everywhere except in the med container for that class of drug.

Rainy Day 05-15-2010 04:08 PM

and because you can say I quilt to people openly, but can you say I take Valium as openly? And quilting is more soothing than any medication. I am considering introducing it in our psychiatric ward, and writing a PhD on it - get paid to quilt at work - YAY, reduce peoples need for Meds - a win win I reckon.

I tried to convince my 14 yr old who has anxiety and panic attacks that quilting would greatly reduce his anxiety but he didn't go for it. But I believe it is true, quilting and chocolate.

sallylarson34 05-15-2010 04:18 PM

could you post a larger picture of your avatar? It's beautiful.

wvdek 05-15-2010 04:42 PM

...when you say you are a quilt addict, you have lots of nice, friendly, loving enablers happy to help you grow your stash.

Pam 05-15-2010 05:11 PM

Quilitng friends are a whole LOT more interesting than drugged friends.

She did a couple of weeks ago but I can't remember what the thread was called. You're right, it IS beautiful. It's her own design if I remember correctly. Try pm-ing her and perhaps she can tell you how to find it.

1quilt_gma 05-15-2010 05:25 PM

Because quilting feeds your soul

IrishNY 05-15-2010 05:45 PM

You don't have to waste money going to a center for quilting addiction rehab.

AliKat 05-15-2010 06:09 PM

Hey guys,
I am a Nurse Practitioner. Guess what .... I've actually written prescriptions for exercise and hobbies. I don't have to worry about drug interactions or drug side effects. Addiction [to quilting] is something else.

Pam 05-15-2010 06:31 PM

Alikat, does that mean I can get a tax credit for quilting? If so, you could probably open a private practice from just new patients here!

I do have panic and anxiety attacks and when I am bothered by something and feel an episode coming I can come into my quilting room and start quilting on soomething and it averts the episode every single time. Don't need no stinkin' valium with quilting around. Just a tall cold glass of milk.

quilting is better because we can all have part of the fun! and talk about it in the morning!! with anyone!!!

MadQuilter 05-15-2010 08:12 PM

because you can think straight and make rational decisions - although Valium does have its uses.

Rebecca VLQ 05-15-2010 08:27 PM

Because when you're going looking for your next "fix" (aka the LQS) people are supportive for a REEEEEEEALY long time before they try to stage an intervention...

Newby0709 05-16-2010 03:34 AM

...get paid at work to quilt...now that's my idea of an ideal job...can't imagine that happening with valium...

IrishNY 05-16-2010 05:47 AM

No one ever said "wow" and "beautiful!" about a picture of a valium.

re:rehab for quilting addiction:
YES, please rehab all of us -- in a fabric shop with a sea of sewing machines and no interruptions for annoying things like the need to stop for cooking..... tee hee

Gerbie 05-16-2010 10:22 AM

The major side effect of quilting is a beautiful project when it is finished and it doesn't harm the body. However, there may be a few strings attached here and there after quilting. lol

MadQuilter 05-16-2010 10:29 AM

easier to share on the QB - I'm sure a Valium-supportive thread would be quickly nixxed by the mods.

Ada Shiela 05-16-2010 11:02 AM

All of the aforesaid positive remarks are wonderful - a busy mind and hands are all we need to keep us going - We do lots of pressing and I think ironing is therapeutic too, time to think and solve some of life's problems, and maybe plan the next project. The valium adverts surprised me somewhat Lostn51!! Just like smoking ads used to impress us eh? Patchwork and quilting might be an expensive hobby but how rich would some of us be if we had $1 for every packet of cigarettes we'd bought in our lifetime - I gave that up 27+ years ago but I'm not the slightest bit richer financially - I wonder why not? LOL

JoanneS 05-16-2010 11:19 AM

No hangovers from quilting ~ ~ ~ Valium made me UGLY when it wore off.

postal packin' mama 05-16-2010 11:29 AM

Congrats to you for kicking the smoking habit!
My SIL kept track of what she & DH were spending on cigs every month (probably 30 years ago by now) and faithfully put exactly that amount in a cookie jar - literally - every single month for a year. They accrued enough to buy one new appliance AND go on a cruise, in only one year! How nice.

Quilting is better than valium because valium is a tiny tablet and my quilt is BIG, BIG, BIG.

That is a wonderful Idea...only problem is the needles, scissors, and pins may be considered "weapons of mass destruction"
