I do it too. When I get to the "sawing" point, I'll change them!

wanda lou 07-02-2011 10:24 PM

I am guilty of the same thing.

i had one and it does work really well. I stopped sewing for a year after we moved and lost it and I miss it :( I always feel like it's a waste to throw it away when I know it could be like new again with one of those. I used to get like 4 sharpenings out of each blade! I used to sew and sell alot of cloth diapers and each diaper had like 8 layers so it was alot of cutting :)

cjtinkle 07-03-2011 02:58 AM

Hahaha... I do and feel the same thing!

mizunogirl 07-03-2011 03:02 AM

I am often wondering abut the blade, and I admit, the sewing machine needle, I hate to change, it's just so small and in a small space...my hands get all tangeled up...

Glassquilt 07-03-2011 03:04 AM

I use the sharpener. It's so much easier when the blade is sharp.

quilt3311 07-03-2011 03:33 AM

Change blades way oftener now that I found the Harbor Freight carpet cutter replacement blades. They are around $1 a blade instead of the $8-$9 of regular blades. I don't know if they work in all cutters, but they do in the Martelli cutter.

Bliss 07-03-2011 03:55 AM

It's like changing sewing machine needles
It feels so good when you finally do

Lavada 07-03-2011 03:59 AM

guilty guilty guilty

chiaraquilts 07-03-2011 04:01 AM

Saw a great sign in a quilt shop: "Replacing your blade is like buying a new bra- you hate to spend the money but are much happier once you do!"

19angel52 07-03-2011 04:06 AM

...time and time again, I do this....and there's no good answer is there?

Numa 07-03-2011 04:14 AM

Thought the same thing Friday when I was cutting. And I have new blades here, just needed to do it!

Suzi 07-03-2011 04:18 AM

I don't think I have ever changed a blade ------ the rotery cutter I use thinks it's the Energizer Bunny and just keeps going and going and going! I kid you not ....... occasionally a stray thread remains but only occasionally. It's a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" so I'll continue to use this one for awhile longer.

drw1mjw2 07-03-2011 04:22 AM

I always fold a sheet of foil up and then roll the cutter through it. It sharpens it and I get longer use from one blade.

Tinabodina 07-03-2011 04:27 AM

I do the same thing - I think it is because I am cheap and don't want to waste anything before I discard.

vickig626 07-03-2011 04:32 AM

that's funny you said that. I was dealing with that just yesterday. So, instead of "changing" it, I tried sharpening it with that little blue gadget that helps a little. Well, I went back to cut again....NOT!! So, again, instead of actually changing the blade, I went and got my other cutter. But, I have new blades sitting by my sewing table and the cutter that needs changing. I'll do that today.

I guess I didn't want to take the time to do it right and tried to get every last bit of cutting ability out of that blade. Shame on me. LOL

grannie cheechee 07-03-2011 04:38 AM

I know why I don't change the blade as often as I should.
The blade will skip, and I think Oh, just a few more cuts, and I'll get a new blade. LOL I'm finished with the cuts, and I forget that I should change the blade.

sweet 07-03-2011 05:06 AM

I have a ticket on the same boat!

Limey 07-03-2011 05:10 AM

Same goes for needles.

wolflady 07-03-2011 05:33 AM

I just have DH sharpen them.

quiltmagnet 07-03-2011 05:34 AM

I got one better on you....I can't find mine.

MargeD 07-03-2011 05:51 AM

Me? Never. Not. I know what you mean though, I try to get all I can and I'm the same with needles, but I'm getting better. Have fun cutting butter.

Haven't tried it but saw a picture of a rotary blade sharpener. Have you seen it? Wonder how it works! Yes, I hold on to mine, too, mainly because they're so expensive and it's 26 miles round trip to get a new one and gas is out of sight!!!

MargeD 07-03-2011 05:54 AM

I can relate. It's taken years, but I finally picked up a nice plastic box where I put my spare rotary cutters and blades (yes I found more when I thoroughly cleaned my sewing room). Then I actually marked the box so I knew what was in it. So, there's hope. Happy July 4th.

My reason for this is that I don't realize how bad it's getting....until I change blades and then I "get" how bad it was!

This is why I started with one and now have three.....if I couldn't find it for a couple of days, I'd go get another one...and then once I couldn't find either....so now I have three. Right now I know where two are.

Rose Bagwell 07-03-2011 06:04 AM

I am the same way, guess trying to save on blades to buy more fabric, that I don't really need.

danade 07-03-2011 06:11 AM

My problem is that when I change the blade in one of my several cutters, I always get the pieces of the cutter mixed up somehow and have a hard time getting them back together! I lay them out in what I think is the correct order but somehow get it messed up. So that's why I tend to use blades longer than I should.

nativetexan 07-03-2011 06:37 AM

nope, i do too. sad but true. you'd think i'd remember how wonderfully it cut with a new blade, but it seems to disappear from my memory.

IdahoSandy 07-03-2011 06:41 AM

Most of us do this, trying to stretch the dollar, because these blades are expensive. The last one I brought was titanium and it has lasted longer.
Guilty,
IdahoSandy

that's me in a nutshell!

ILK2QLT 07-03-2011 06:45 AM

I only think about changing the rotary blade when I am using it and do not want to stop and change it ... even if cutting would be easier if I did

ILK2QLT 07-03-2011 06:51 AM

Roatary blade sharpeners come in many shapes and sizes and costs so can't speak for all of them but the one I bought looked like a knife sharpener. After one try, it became part of the next garage sale

sewmuchlove 07-03-2011 06:51 AM

Well, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one that keeps trying to use dull blades. We are a thrifty and sometime stubborn bunch but old dogs can learn new tricks.

ILK2QLT 07-03-2011 06:52 AM

If we don't take time to change a blade, we probably wouldn't take time to sharpen them either

ILK2QLT 07-03-2011 06:54 AM

If we don't take time to change a blade, we probably wouldn't take time to sharpen them either ... even if we found a great sharpener

Blinkokr 07-03-2011 06:56 AM

Change them, I didn't know that haha
Have a Blessed day
Ellen

aronel 07-03-2011 07:12 AM

No you are not the only one. I am currently using a blade on the third quilt, it is getting bad, but I'm not going to change it until I start the next quilt. For me it is economics, either that or I am just cheap, Probably both. LOL!!

I bought a sharpener, it doesn't work.

2pedersens 07-03-2011 07:40 AM

I do the same thing. But, FYI ------ if you clean the blade and the cutter with mineral oil, you can get a lot of extra cuts from that old blade.
