Why do I wait Soooo long before I finally break down and change the blade on my rotary cutter??? It is like cutting thru butter with a hot knife when I change the blade. I am the only who trys to get every cut and then some out of my blades??

DebraK 07-02-2011 04:51 PM

I've gotten a little better about it ;-)

thimblebug6000 07-02-2011 04:51 PM

What???? You're supposed to change them....hehehe.... it's amazing what a new blade can do.......

Sadiemae 07-02-2011 04:52 PM

I often wonder the same thing....

sarahrachel 07-02-2011 04:53 PM

I think part of the reason I don't is because I don't have another blade on hand and when I finally get another one, I forget to change it right away. Once I get frustrated enough, I'll finally change it. But no, you're not the only one

arizonagirl 07-02-2011 04:53 PM

Nope I do the same thing.

lscho4jm 07-02-2011 04:55 PM

I'm just a bloomin', cheap, tightwad! I do agree though, when the blade gets changed how much easier life gets. :)

Carrie Jo 07-02-2011 04:56 PM

I do the same thing. I just dont think about it. not to bright sometimes I guess.

jillnjo 07-02-2011 04:56 PM

...always think it will make one more cut....

lynnsim 07-02-2011 05:05 PM

I'm the same way. But how nice when I do finally change the blade, lol.

alikat110 07-02-2011 05:06 PM

Harbor freight has made this easier

LOL - I just changed mine & was thinking the same thing. Amazing difference isn't it?

bearisgray 07-02-2011 05:17 PM

Do the same thing.

Don't have a good answer as to "why" though.

Jingle 07-02-2011 05:20 PM

Usually I am just too lazy to mess with it. I find if I keep using the blade it does finally sharpen up a bit.

jean1941 07-02-2011 05:21 PM

You are not alone and part of the reason is the price that we pay for them I have be wondering if I should get a thing so I can sharpen them do they work??????

klc 07-02-2011 05:23 PM

I'm bad too. I hate changing them.

QuiltingKrazy 07-02-2011 05:27 PM

Glad to know I'm not the only one!

I wait to long too.

amma 07-02-2011 05:32 PM

I just don't think about it until my wrist starts hurting, and then I realize how hard I am having to press down on that dull blade  :D:D:D

butterflies5518 07-02-2011 05:41 PM

I too wait till it skips way too much before I take the minute to change it.

Get carpet cutter replacement blades from Harbor Freight. They are a package of 2 blades for between $1.49-$1.99. WELL WORTH the price. They are item #97642 and you can get them online if you dont have a Harbor Freight near you. ALOT of quilters are using these now instead of buying them from Joann's or Walmart or LQS.

LisaGibbs 07-02-2011 05:46 PM

At least I have good company. I try to save every penny I can so I can spend it on fabric and not something boring like a blade.

I bought one of the sharpeners and I don't think it was worth my money. I have it in a drawer, if someone would like to have it to try it, its yours for the shipping!!!

I tend to be frugal in the extreme...but a new blade can make things much quicker and easier.

crafty_linda_b 07-02-2011 06:15 PM

Did you know you can take them out and turn them over? I do that with mine and they cut like new on the other angle...I try to keep using mine too as long as I can..I bought 5 of the 5 packs of them off eBay and now I can't find them!! I got a great deal on them, paid $25 and the guy shipped them free!! They were fiscars too not an off brand. I wish he would have had more packages, I would have gotten more of them. I think my quilt gremlins are up to no good again!! They love to hide stuff from me constantly..

Yes, or at least they do when you have your son do it. lol I tried using the sharpener I got from Hancock Fabrics and apparently my arthritic hands just don't press hard enough to sharpen the blade. Hancock's had them soooo cheap I couldn't resist. I did have to purchase the Dual Rotary Blade Sharpener at regular price, but I had a coupon to make it 40% cheaper, and the replacement sharperner disks were back in the clearance bins for only 50 cents each (I got the last 4 they had, lol) I'm very pleased with the result - I haven't bought blades in a very long while, and only had to sharpen them a couple of times. I use them pretty frequently, too. Good product, just don't give up if they don't sharpen well enough at first - try again (maybe with a different pair of hands).

S D G 07-02-2011 06:34 PM

Same here! :?:

BellaBoo 07-02-2011 06:39 PM

I bought the Grace sharpener and use it before I start cutting. It really keeps my blade sharp. Remember to sharpen a sharp blade and it will last a very long time.

Ruby the Quilter 07-02-2011 06:40 PM

I do the same thing. Need to check out Harbor Frieght - there is one just a few miles from me.

kbs 07-02-2011 06:41 PM

I am not alone.

SueSew 07-02-2011 06:47 PM

Me too - except I assuage the guilt of buying new blades by using the sharpener which works for about 3 yards of fabric before clutching

I am guilty of this also.

BETTY62 07-02-2011 07:59 PM

It's nice to know I'm not the only slow learner. LOL

RenaB 07-02-2011 08:55 PM

I am guilty. Sometimes I just don't think about it. Then one day when I just keep struggling the light comes on. Duh, change the blade. It does make a world of difference.

Yep, that about sums it up.

OneMoreQuilt 07-02-2011 08:57 PM

I am bad about changing my blades and also machine needles. I do like the new ones soooo much better. I'm trying to get into a better routine about changing them.

I do the same thing. I even changed to the other side, same blade, twice. I had 2 pkgs. from Harbor Freight, so I have no excuse.LOL

M.I.Late 07-02-2011 09:34 PM

I do the same thing. I can't remember when I changed mine last. But, it's still cutting and not skipping so it stays...

slk350 07-02-2011 09:42 PM

Maybe if they didn't cost so much, we would change them more. You would think they are gold plated LOL
