Why do people cut their fabric like this? Obviously, they cut something out and left it that way. I cut mine clean across and then throw the scraps in the scrap bin. Nice clean scraps.....Otherwise it bugs me! Grrrr... Is this weird?
Mine are all kinds of weird shapes. :)
Cut it like what? Do you have a picture?
Oh it bugs me too. Lol
Because I never know what shape I will need next and tehn I might regret trimming it off. Does that make sense? OK the pieces I am looking at do look really odd. I would have cut off those peaks.

 As long as I can fold it, I don't mind what it looks like. Do you want to see the expensive batik that I fussy cut? You'd scream. |
I have cut fabric straight across and regretted it later. It depends on what you finally use the scraps for.
I have been given fabric that looks like that. I just figured it was used with a pattern you cut out for clothing or something. That's why it ended up looking like that.

I do it for applique pieces and for puzzle quilts.
Those look like some of the donated fabrics I get from someone taking a class & having to cut a weird shapes out!! I cut them straight across & do as you do put the rest in the scrap bin!
Whenever I cut appliques out, I leave my fabric like that. I never know what I'll cut out next, lol.
I am on the fence about this. I hate that look too but then again I have needed that little point to make enough room for a odd shaped piece so if I can fold it up and not have a big messy pile I leave it.
People do things differently. I like to keep my big pieces together, and cut all of the small pieces into bins using Bonnie Hunter's method for a guide. It is working for me. I usually cut off a small piece of my fabric when cutting out a project, depending of what I am doing, but I do find some like that, but later on they do get trimmed and later into proper bins. I am almost caught up with my scrap control on cotton. But still out of control on my flannel, but I am getting it organized slowly. When I get this done, my second goal will be to finish up all of my UFO's, so I can move on to other projects without all that clutter going on. Wish me luck!! HA HA HA

Those look like mine lol

That is exactly what my stuff looks like. LOL. Sorry. & some scraps are even pinned back to the main fabric.
?? I might need it?? Dunno. but no, I dont trim off the peaks. cheep cheep cheep, I guess. :) |
Back in the olden days (so I've been told) fabric was cut using scissors and templates. I imagine this would be the result. (Also with applique pieces being cut out.)
That fabric looks like it's been used for clothing.
I have trouble with that type of leavings, because it's hard to tell where the straight grain is and that's a problem if I don't want to use the bias. |
I have some pieces that look like that left over from fussy cutting or clothing. I just leave it because I don't know what I will do next. Sometimes they are perfect for paper piecing.
Not only do I leave those odd cuts on the main piece, I also fold any small scraps of the same fabric inside. I have no small scrap heap.
Looks like my fabric. I'll cut each piece to the shape I need it when I need it. I never know if I will use it for an applique piece, something for a baby's clothing or a piece for a quilt. If I cut it straight across it would probably be just enough to prevent me from being able to cut out a small shirt or a long stem or leaf. Where's the fun in having everything cut into squares or rectangles?
I tend to neaten mine unless the odd shape is at the fold. Those I leave because the piece when opened up can be big enough to cut a shape out of.
A lot of mine looks like that when I have been paper piecing. I just cut out the fabric I need to fit the piece I need - it's not neat. :-(
I don't trim anything away after cutting a piece out of something or when making clothes. I save the little scraps too. No it doesn't bother me. The next time I need that fabric I just repress all the pieces and then use the one that works for the currant project. I call it tightening the belt.
I had asked on another post if buyers preferred the pieces "tidied up" - with a nice even edge - which I agree looks ever so much neater -
or Whether they would like "the extra" left on. Of the people that responded, most preferred to have "the extra" left on. I decided - in many cases - to leave it on - and the buyer could tidy up the pieces if it bothered them. I frequently cut fabric from the back side because it's easier to see the grain lines from the back. |
Nope. That's how I cut mine.

Looks like mine, too. If I were to trim off the odd parts, that would be exactly how much more I'd need for the next cut to fit. I've never been the obsessive-compulsive type, though; just happily go with the flow. :D
I find that if I cut the shapes I want out and leave the rest, I have that extra fabric something else later down the road, when I have cut straight and cut something out of that chunk, it wastes a lot of fabric and these days with the prices of fabric I try to get the most I can out of every piece :) Just me, yeppers I am a penny pincher!
if my scraps are less than 1/4 yd, then i cut them into 2.5" strips, whatever the length on each pc.... if more than 1/4 yd, they are folded and go back into the stash in it's color group. if any scrap has odd tails or small leftover scraps, i trim them and either put in my 'confetti' quilt jars or chuck them, pretty much depending on my mood. my 2.5" strips are stored in color coded pizza boxes so that i can pick up any 2 or three boxes at any time and play or work on them for donor blocks...
Looks like someone made the cuts for some kind of clothing or for appliques.

My friend Dorothy does alot of my prep work for me and when I give her fabric to cut for making Blocks she will look at it and see the holes or jagged areas and say:
Well it looks like a little mouse has been at it again! LOl I am always hacking off a small piece here and there. I always have ragged looking fabric! I might need a piece that only that only that fabric will allow me to cut it out. I leave the ends and odd shaped sections because I might need to cut a long piece and that odd shape might just give me enough room for the length I need. |
I really don't like the "all kind of shapes left" fabric, either! But, I am like Rhonda, and I do leave it that way as I always think, "What if I need that exact fabric, and it needs to be a few inches longer??...and it was until I cut it off to be even.." ;)
I don't have a problem with it. You can always cut it straight later but what if
I cut mine that way when I use it on applique but anything with geometrics, I also cut a strip and trim down. The good thing- they will be easy to straighten out.
