so...
maybe in your neighborhood they do not use yellow???
typed yellow quilts into the search engine- over a hundred pages to look at....
personally- not a yellow person- but have included yellows when they were needed- i'm not quite convinced that every quilt should have a little yellow :)

Perhaps I should have phrased the question differently ....yes, I see a blotch of yellow here and there in quilts but if you look at the quilts overall it's almost never the dominating color. The reason I asked was because I did an old timey Butter and Egg quilt for my daughter, on point, with a white background and a single, repeated, patched block of yellow with small, white polka dots alternating with a white square in which I quilted flowers. The border , also, was white with quilted vine and leaves and it was so stunning it just made me wonder why I didn't see something of that nature in most of my many, many quilt books and magazines is all.

Your quilt sounds beautiful, would love to see it.

Lovely quilts

bnlmom 06-02-2011 01:18 PM

My last quilt was yellow, orange and red--not colors I usually use but loved how it turned out!

uniquelynancy 06-03-2011 02:54 AM

I have never made a yellow quilt but have a yellow and black one in my "quilts to make " pile. I always add yellow to my quilts too.

Lavada 06-03-2011 03:12 AM

look at the fabric store yellow is usually hard to find at least in my area of the country

19angel52 06-03-2011 03:22 AM

...have no idea...but I almost always have a touch of yellow (at the very least!) in my quilts!

SueDor 06-03-2011 03:28 AM

I put yellow in my quilts!

Scrap Happy 06-03-2011 03:28 AM

I love yellow. I remember when I worked at LQS the owner and ladies working there said don't use 'too much' yellow in a quilt because it 'takes over' a quilt. So I didn't get much yellow. After a while I realized I like yellow and will put as much of it as I like in my quilts. :-P

patchsamkim 06-03-2011 03:31 AM

I love yellow...and have used it in quilts...yellow and green...yellow and purple...it is a great color...I have had a picture for years of a yellow and white 2 color quilt that I want to make...one of these years I will get going on it...have to find the right yellow, and I don't usually go with white, so will be muslin...someday!

smagruder 06-03-2011 03:41 AM

I use a lot of yellow.... have lots of quilts... just haven't posted any quilts on here....I don't know how to get them posted from they are on my computer. I am not very computer literate.

stitchengramie 06-03-2011 03:41 AM

I like using yellow in a quilt. I am making a graduation quilt for my grandson and yellow is one of his favorite colors.

Oh come on now, people. Let's see some pix of these quilts you're describing with yellow in them! A picture is worth at least 1000 words-- especially a picture of a quilt!

dove 06-03-2011 03:43 AM

that's so funny...i just finished buying material for my next quilt, and it has yellow in it...i did have a hard time finding yellow fabrics though...not as much of a selection...yellow is great...it's happy and bright!

My daughter and I love yellow, also. In fact, I am in the process of making her a blue and yellow quilt. I have a blue and yellow quilt on my bed at this moment. Blue and yellow cannot be beat!

mic-pa 06-03-2011 03:46 AM

When I first started quilting(many years ago) I did not use yellow. Then I read an article in a magazine from a famous designer and she said there should be a little yellow in every room to accent it. I started using it in my quilts and love it. Also I just recently made two quilts with orange in them and it really popped. My grandson loves them. He got one

JulieTN 06-03-2011 03:49 AM

I LOVE YELLOW - like red, it can add zip to the quilt. Yellow, in variouos shades, goes with many many other colors very well.

I use it to the extreme in my baby giveaway quilt - cheerful!

GOOD question!

I am working on a quilt now that has yellow in it. I haven't used it much but it is such a happy color. It's a color that makes you smile as you quilt.

star619 06-03-2011 04:00 AM

I've noticed that yellow has become increasingly popular in the last year or two. I imagine Kaffe Fassett's prints with his bright color palettes has influenced the current trend. Also, I find that the clearer yellows ( no green or grayish tones) surive the test of time better.

Linda Renfro 06-03-2011 04:03 AM

I was raised that yellow is bad luck... they used the term it's forsaken. I have very very few pieces of yellow anything in my wardrobe, house or quilts. If I buy anything with yellow I rename it "maze" or something like that. I know stupid, but after 65 years I don't think I'll chance it now. Although I love the color I just don't buy anything yellow.

Tinker Tots 06-03-2011 04:08 AM

My favorite quilt I made is mostly all yellow. I myself is a lover of yellow, blue and white. I then like red and white.

To post your pictures with a topic you are starting, you’ll see at the bottom of the page (under Send) “File Attachments.” Select “Browse” and add your picture(s.) All the way to the left of “Browse” is a spot where you can type in a Heading to go with your picture if you like. Don’t preview your pictures or they will disappear. Hope this makes sense.

Interesting topic! I don't seem to use a lot of yellow but I love the color. Hmmm......??
We painted our bedroom yellow and what a nightmare!! It was supposed to be soft but on the walls looked like lemons. Did it over and finally got a nice soft shade.
Much easier to work with yellow in fabric in my opinion LOL
As someone else posted a lot goes with it too.
I agree it's a happy color! :D

Me too!!!!

I don't know why I don't use much yellow. It is a nice bright color and I love brights. I always seem to go to the purples, pinks and teals. I use some though. Yellow just has never been a favorite of mine. My sister uses yellow everywhere

Iamquilter 06-03-2011 05:09 AM

As Sadiemae said I also saw in a quilt book that said yellow gets lost in a quilt.I use a little but not much in my quilts.

Janetlmt 06-03-2011 05:14 AM

Yellow is my favorite color as it is my DH. My sewing room is painted yellow..it is so bright and cheery. My first quilt was also a lot of yellow.
I think a lot of people are afraid of yellow. I know it sounds crazy..but so true. I owned a flower shop for 15 years..and I can't count how many times people would say "don't put any yellow in it" Yellow tucked in makes the other colors pop! It does the same for quilts also..but used in the right setting.
Peace and blessings,

Homemother 06-03-2011 05:25 AM

Yellow is not my favorite by a long shot, but it looks great in quilts. You all are right - it makes the quilt pop. I tried using yellow in a quilt of mine and I had to remove it. Maybe it was the hue, maybe it was the pattern, maybe it was TOO much yellow.

Bottom line is: I have no idea how to use yellow in a quilt. The quilt I'm making now is bright with very pretty fabrics, but it lacks a certain pizazz, which is probably yellow.

Show me your quilts!!! Help me like yellow!!! Overwhelm me with your beautiful YELLOW quilts!!! Post! Post! Post!

suzette1954 06-03-2011 05:26 AM

yellow is my favorite colors, I love all of the primary colors.

vickimc 06-03-2011 05:28 AM

I have never made an all yellow quilt. but I like some yellow in most of my quilts. adds a little pop here and there. but there is nothing wrong with yellow. It is a hard color for people to wear. it looks better on dark skin people that pale skin. go for it.

ScrappyAZ 06-03-2011 05:37 AM

I'm currently working on a quilt with snowball blocks, and I'm using yellow for the corners. It's not an extra bright in-your-face yellow, but enough to add some "pop" to the blocks.

I generally use more gold than yellow in my quilts.

MissJMac 06-03-2011 05:37 AM

Seems every season there's "favorite" color, but I agree with you, there does always seem to be a shortage of yellows, oranges and peaches. I load up whenever I see these colors and I have a pretty good supply now. Looks like this is the season of lavender and purples - my granddaughter's favorite colors.
Anyone have info on the apparent shortage of yellows on the quilt walls??

ButtermilkMama 06-03-2011 05:42 AM

I haven't used very much yellow, but would not hesitate to use it to "spark" a flowered quilt orsomething for an older lady, or a baby quilt. I guess I definitely would stay w/ a feminine quilt.

I use a lot of yellow but I suspect it is because I love quilts from the '30's. Yellow is one of my 3 favorite colors...red, green and yellow. My GD says, "Oh just like the stop lights!". Just attached the one I am working on now..it is called "Little French Picnic"..from a magazine from several years ago. If interested, I can send more info.

Marge L. 06-03-2011 05:52 AM

A few years back it was hard to find yellow prints---period. Mentioned it to someone in the know and they said it was hard for the mfg. to find the dyes. Really don't know how true that is, but it is easier now. As was mentoned, light yellows are hard to find. Marge L.

I use a lot of yellow. Adds a little sunshine!

Doreen 06-03-2011 05:56 AM

I love yellow and I'm always in seach of "yellows". I also have a lot of shades of orange.

Below is a link to an article about using yellow in a quilt.
I found it most helpful. There are many more articles on that website that discuss color.

Enjoy.

That's a very good article. Thanks - it's amazing how our subconscious works. Is there an article on green?
