Have noticed that yellow is not a very popular color for quilts. Is there a specific reason for this? It's cheerful, happy and sunny.

Love yellow!
|
Yellow is my favorite color, so I use it alot. I really like blue and yellow together.
|

I don't know if there's a reason but light yellow fabric is very hard to find. When I shop on-line that's the first thing I look for and very seldom find anything but bright yellows.
|
When I started putting in gardens at our home, I loaded the beds with yellow and white flowers. It was a bit bright and hot looking. I traded some of the yellow flowers for pinks and purples, added a few blues, put in more evergreen shrubs, and now it is the way we love it. I think now the yellow flowers accent rather than overwhelm.
I feel the same about yellow in quilts. I love yellow. But in quilts as in gardens, a little goes a long way. |
My favorite color, but it is hard to work with in quilting. I think that is why most don't use it. I have dreamed of an all yellow Giant Dahlia for years. I have not had the nerve to try it though.

lots of reasons/opinions:
you may like it; others may have another opinion... think it depends on the palette you are using & what mood you are trying to create with that palette Also, many make quilts identical to the ones they see in magazines--and many use traditional WHITE yellow is seen as a feminine color... it's a great color--it just doesn't "FIT" with every project-- many of us are color challenged & i find it hard to build a quilt around a single color... |
I love yellow too. My first quilt used yellow as the sashing. I feel happier when I work with bright cheerful colors. Is that silly?
|
i don't know where you came up with that assumption???
around here i see lots and lots of yellow... and in our little sewing/quilting group we have one lady who has been actively quilting for over 50 years---according to her- it's not a quilt if it doesn't have at least a piece of yellow somewhere---she really loves yellow in quilts- and makes FABULOUS ONES! so... maybe in your neighborhood they do not use yellow??? typed yellow quilts into the search engine- over a hundred pages to look at.... personally- not a yellow person- but have included yellows when they were needed- i'm not quite convinced that every quilt should have a little yellow :) |
I love yellow too, but it's a very strong color that draws the eye. I think that's why many quilters use it sparingly in their quilts (when they use it at all) so it doesn't overwhelm the overall look.
I have several quilts that are either predominantly yellow or have yellow in them. I find it's a great color to use when used correctly. :D :D |

supposedly, yellow is the first color your eye sees when looking at a mass of color...
|
I love yellow and orange for quilts.
|
I don't use much yellow because a too bright yellow can make a statement in a quilt. Yellow is not one of my favorite colors so maybe that is why I don't use much of it.

says who?

I use a lot of yellow, and have made at least one quilt where it was the dominant color. I think it really wakes up some designs. I wouldn't say it has to be in all quilts, but it's not a color to be afraid to use. Janet |
I like yellow. but, honestly, haven't even paid that much attention. Will have to keep my eyes open. You are very observant.
|
type yellow in the search funtion and you'll see that quite a few people here use yellow.
|
Love yellow myself. Made a log cabin using yellow and purple for my 9 year old GD and it came out so pretty and sunny.

Yellow is just not one of my favorite colors. I do think it looks pretty in quilts though.

The eye is drawn to those yellow patches quite quickly! Thanks for sharing.
I thought I'd add some photos of quilts to demonstrate what I mean, These are mine. The zinnia table runner is a summer piece, but wow, a bit much. The others make better use of the yellow.
maryb119--couldn't help notice how the yellow pops in your avatar quilt  |
I read a book quite awhile ago that said Never put yellow in a quilt. I thought it was interesting, because I like yellow in a quilt.
|
Orange is my favorite color but yellow is a close second. I have made all orange and all yellow quilts. I scrap quilt so it can be all different shades of the color.
|
I love yellow and blue and my favorite yellow is fairy frost sunshine...

I am going to be making a quilt for my youngest sister, and it's going to be blue and yellow. Yellow goes great with a lot of colors, lavender, lilac, purple, greens...to name just a few. Yellow is a great color

After red...yellow is a fave color of mine. But you are right, there doesn't appear to be much yellow in quilts these days.
