I agree with quilticing. I generall cut 2.5" and fold in half. My walking foot lines up slightly more than 1/4" and this gives me a 1/2" binding, but if I want it a bit wider I cut 3".

I cut mine 1 7/8 inches. I make a 1/4 inch seam to attach it to the quilt. Cut this size and making a 1/4 inch seam makes for a nice tight binding. Judges really like full bindings, when you feel of the edges you don't feel any empty space, the binding is full. I don't know what you do with all the extra fabric when you cut it wider. I like mine to be 1/4 inch on the front and 1/4 inch on the back, looks very nice.

Mine are always 2 1/4 inches...works great for me.

Since you use 3" binding when you attach to your quilt do you sew it at 1/4 or 1/2 inch? I did a 3" binding on my first quilt but sewed it to the quilt at 1/4 and it seems I had to much freedom of material when had sewn to backside. I sewed to backside right beneath the stitch line.

I use 2 1/4 for regular fabric on quilts but I use 2 1/2 for flannel to allow for the thickness of the fabric.
2 1/4, 2 1/5 or 3". Depends on the size of the quilt.
I cut mine at 2 1/4" wide fold in half & press.
2-1/2
Most of the time I cut it 2 1/2 inches fold in half and press .
I used to cut them 2 1/2" because that's what I was taught to do, but there was too much overhang on the back side, so I cut it 2 1/4" now.
On most of my quilts I prefer a 5/16 inch finished binding, and cut them at 2.5 inches.
I make mostly charity quilts and use fluffy poly batting. I use 3.5" piece of fabric which makes kind of a wide binding. I also sew the charity quilts ones on by machine.
When I first started quilting it was 2 1/2 to 3, now it's
2 1/4". |
I use a flat two inches for double fold binding. I like a very narrow binding, though. I've tried 1 3/4" but that is just a little too narrow to be workable.
I cut 2 1/2" and fold over to make it double. Machine stitch onto the top side of the quilt with 1/4" seam. Turn under, and slip stitch by hand on the back. I also miter the corners.
I prefer single fold binding so I usually cut anywhere from 1.5 to 2 inches. If I'm doing French Fold Binding, I use about 2.5-3"
It depends on a couple of things:
1. The size of the project. For small projects I prefer 2.25 but for a large quilt probably 2.5. 2. The amount of fabric I have to bind. Sometimes it has to be narrower in order to use the color I want without another trip to the store. |
2 1/2 inches.
2 1/2 unless it is a small quilt. then 2.
Mine is always 2-1/4", but batting thicknesses would have to be considered I think. I mostly use Warm and Natural.
2.5, works great for me.
I actually cut it 2 3/4" sometimes and move my needle 1 stop to make a wider 1/4" seam. The finished binding is the same width. I did it a couple times to hide my oops on the edge and liked it a lot so I've done it that way a few times now. I still use 2 1/2" sometimes, but never narrower.
I cut at 2.5" and fold in half. I Sew it onto the front by machine using a 1/4" foot and whip it down on the back by hand. I enjoy hand work and I love the clean look of the binding with no visible stitching:-)
I cut my binding 2 3/4 inches wide, press in half.
Machine stitch to the front with my walking foot, turn and hand stitch to the back. |
2 1/2" - also fold to make it double.
I always thought a 1/4 inch was a 1/4 inch. Didn't know there were different sizes of 1/4 inch.

me too unless I use a fluffy batting for some of the Linus quilts I do.

I moved the needle 1 position to the left - guess I should measure it for exactness when I try to explain it. I think of it as the opposite of 'scant' for which I move the needle 1 position to the right.
2.25" ~~
I cut it two and a half inches
2 1/2
2 1/2. because that is the size of my strip cutter for my go.
For my current quilt I am using 3 1/2" simply for aesthetics purposes and fold over to make it double. I usually just do 2 1/4" and sew on with 1/4" seam.
2 1/4", fold and press and make double binding.
