How wide do you cut your binding? Just wondering!
I usually cut mine 2 1/2".
2-1/4"
I do 2 1/4 inch. But it really depends on how thick my batting is.
2 & 1/4"; then folded

I've always cut it 2", and it worked really well for me.
But I recently started using Sharon Schamber's method, and on the last quilt that was just a tad too tight to work (I had cut the binding months before I saw the method). I made it work, but it wasn't fun. ;-) So now I'm going to start cutting it 2 1/4" wide on future quilts. |
2.5
Looks like I'm in the minority but I cut mine 3 inches. I like a little wider binding.
The cut width depends on the width of your seam. for a folded binding start with 6 times the width of your seam and adjust accordingly. However that formulae doesn't take into donsideration the folds of the binding both when you fold it initially and the fold to the back. Since most of my quilts have a 3/8" seam allowance I cut 2.5".
When you initially stitch the double folded binding down, then measure how much binding there is to the left of your seam line. It should be slightly more than twice the width of your seam. I found 2.5" a little wide so started cutting to 2.14" and it works better. I attach the binding to the back by hand. The seam of the binding should be consistent and a size to fill with the quilt. Practice a bit until you have found what is good for you. |
I use 2.5 for quilts, 2.25 for wallhangings. It is a matter of preference for everyone. Whatever you are comfortable with and works for you is what you should do.
2 1/2" and fold over to make it double. Sew on with 1/4" seam. I only quilt with Warm and Natural or Warm and White....
2" works for me unless I'm using a thicker batting (I usually use Hobbs 80/20). I use a 1/4" seam to attach it to the front. If I use a wider seam allowance to attach it, then I also increase the width of the binding.
I cut mine 2 1/4". Turns out perfect every time. :D
2" folded over and folded again, giving my 1/2" of finished strip on the quilt.
2". The tighter the binding, the longer it is supposed to wear according to Kaffe Fassett
I've been using 2 1/2" folded in half, but I'm going to increase it. I like a slightly wider binding.
2 1/2"
Depends on what kind of batting but the standard I mostly use is 2 1/2". :)

As Holice and others have said, practice different ways and decide what works best for you. |
It's really personal preference! I belonged to a smallish guild that had speakers two months in a row. The first one told us she cuts her binding 1 3/4ths and gave her reasons. The next month the speaker said she cut hers at 3 inches and gave her reasons. Do what looks good to you!

Do you remember what her reasons were? Just curious. Edited to add "French" - I was thinking it but apparently didn't type it. |

Do you remember what her reasons were? Just curious. Double fold binding is still only one layer thick. It just means both raw edges are folded to the center. Single fold binding means one raw edge is folded to the center. |
Anywhere from 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 depending on how wide I want the finished binding to be. I personally tend to like them wider.
I cut 2 1/4 if I'm going to stitch it onto the front and hand-sew it to the back. I cut 2 1/2 if I'm going to wrap to the front and do a decorative stitch.
2 1/4
I cut it 2.5 and fold in half. My binding is always wider on the back, but that's how I want it. I sew with 1/4" seam on the front.

2 1/4
2 1.4 to 2 1.2 depending on the mood, the batting and the binding fabric.
I always do the math to have a nice even binding on both sides but the reality usually has the back wider than the front. Oh Well. |
I use 2.5" on a regular quilt and 2" on mug rugs. I think it just depends on personal taste. I think a narrower binding would be harder to put on, so maybe the more experienced one gets, the narrower the binding can be? I am kind of a slap and dash kind of person... I agree a thicker batting needs a wider binding, too.

Not every quilt needs 1/4" binding showing. Sometimes wider looks better. Go with the look you need for the project. When attaching, sew the 1/4" seam but at the corner you have to adjust the amount needed to get a nice 90 degrees, Then trim accordingly. So plan on strips 2-3" normally.
