Windmill quilt layout opinions needed

hi there I'm making a windmill quilt and before i put on my corners I'm testing a layout should i do a Color fade or a random? opinions please

Beautiful blocks. I think it would look great in a random arrangement but I always turn to have my blocks scattered across the quilt. I am sure you will get great ideas from the QB members on here. Which arrangement do you like the best?

QuiltnNan 01-15-2018 04:36 PM

i would normally say the color fade. but with your windmills, i would say scattered

Maggie_Sue 01-15-2018 05:48 PM

Color fade is my vote!! Love these blocks!!!

cathyvv 01-15-2018 06:00 PM

I love them both! So glad I don't have to make the decision.

JayneW 01-15-2018 06:08 PM

I like the scattered arrangement just a bit better.

quilt addict 01-15-2018 06:29 PM

Since it isn't very many blocks, I would go with the scattered. Great blocks.

My vote is scattered. Looks like candy!!!! Beautiful.

I like a color fade and would put that purple one in the far left corner and work up--blues, turquoise, greens, etc. Neat quilt.

I agree with this ^^^^^

I like both. Very nice. Great colours too.

I'm no help because I love both!! But if I have to choose I go with the second one.

Macybaby 01-16-2018 07:00 AM

My choice would be a random placement for the existing blocks. For a color fade, I'd be making another light red/pink/coral, and remove the darkest blue.

Layout:
Dark red in the upper right, then going diagonal, two mid red, then three lighter red (one new). Then four using the yellow and three oranges. then another row of four, using the four of the lighter green (and the blue/green since the green in that one is light). Next row would be three darker green/turquoise blocks. Then two blue and the purple in the lower left corner.

Another thing that helps with color fade, move from light to dark in the diagonal row, so where you have yellow and three oranges, example would be put the yellow at top, then the lightest orange and the darkest orange at the bottom. The next row, put the lightest green at the top and move down to the darkest green at the bottom.

I prefer the random look.

Boston1954 01-16-2018 07:28 AM

I like the random one.

ArtsyOne 01-16-2018 07:42 AM

I like the random one, with possibly the purple one in the center since it appears that you only have one of those.

Jennifer23 01-16-2018 10:18 AM

I prefer the colour fade, and I like Macybaby's suggestion for how to arrange it.

Whichever way you go, your quilt is going to be lovely!

I prefer the colour fade.

Lovely, any way you look at it.

Color fade, but either way those two white cornered ones are very distracting.

Kassaundra 01-16-2018 11:15 AM

Oh my, just realized my mistake, I just woke and have had very little sleep in the past 36 hours. The brown is the floor, you weren't trying to make the secondary circle patterning. Ooops, I still prefer the fade, but I seldom prefer complete random or scrappy, my mind always tried for some sort of order.

zozee 01-16-2018 12:09 PM

Color face is my vote. Pretty quilt.

Annie68 01-16-2018 01:25 PM

I'd go with the random, lovely quilt!

platyhiker 01-16-2018 02:24 PM

I vote color fade, but with Macybaby's suggested changes.

Becky's Crafts 01-16-2018 07:03 PM

Lovely pattern! Very pretty!

JustAbitCrazy 01-16-2018 09:24 PM

I like the random the best. Very pretty blocks!

Oceangirl2 01-17-2018 12:21 AM

I agree, colour fade after moving purple to corner.

quilterpurpledog 01-17-2018 02:28 AM

I like those blocks very much. I like the color fade or rainbow effect. I also think Macybaby's suggestions should be considered.

Karamarie 01-17-2018 04:59 AM

With the colors you have, my choice would be random.

margied 01-17-2018 06:02 AM

I like the fade.

WMUTeach 01-17-2018 06:13 AM

I like the second option better. The colors seem more balanced. I noticed that some have the three color triangles going up while others have the three color triagles going to the side was that on purpose or just by accident?

Ioftheneedle 01-17-2018 07:42 AM

Please explain, what does the term 'color fade' mean in quilting terms?
Thanks!

Macybaby 01-17-2018 08:24 AM

color fade is when you arrange the blocks so you are moving from one color to another, and usually following the color wheel - IE going from red to orange to yellow to green to blue to purple to red. And sometimes it's also done going from light to dark in one color group.

these are all examples of color fade - guess I really like using it!

it is on purpose, you alternate the blocks that is why i did not sew on the corners yet so i could rotate the block.

I love a color fade quilt. Yours is beautiful.

I vote for re-arranged color fade. Very nice :)
