Oh don't feel bad, we have all been there... I used to be so organized (think boring) and now... well, last year I finished my "divorce" quilt... this is one I started about 12 yrs ago, got the top done and never got back to it.. well, I finished it last year.

I do have about 6 tops in there that are done waiting for further instructions from me to finish them..themselves..haha

Being on these boards is really bad. You see all these wonderful quilts and projects and you just want to do them all....

Miss Ruthie 01-28-2011 05:19 AM

What's a PIGS? I probably have that too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am new on here and new to quilting and I am here to say, someone really needs to put a permanent page on here that explains abreviations. Sometimes I have totally no idea what you all are talking about!!! lol

We are in this together. I have lots of WIPs. I think there are about 10 bags, each with one WIP, hanging up and more in a box somewhere and some orphan blocks just waiting to be put into an orphan block quilt, and more somewhere else. The longer I'm in quilting, the more WIPs I have. Oh yes, I intend to finish some this year - I hope.

You know what Dr. Phil says. Not finishing something could mean that you are avoiding judgement of what is completed. My Mother always had something negative to say about everything , and I think my Not completing something has something to do with that judgement. What do you think?

jolo 01-28-2011 06:06 AM

this board is an enabler for WIPS too. I am going to do the BOM that started Jan 1. Finally got my fabric pulled out of my stash and of course had to buy one of them, had to wait for my LQS to get it in and then it was on backorder, waited again. Now it is in and I am a month behind almost. So I had to do something while I waited didn I? lol

sik1010 01-28-2011 06:06 AM

When I first joined here, I thought I was the only one with UFO's or WIP, now I tell DH it's part of the addiction process and MOST people have it (and it's verifiable right here-so thanks for the back-up support to my claim)!!! (lol)

The Clover desk needle threader will solve that problem!

You may have something there, we had the same mother. I love your little baby, I have one that looks just like him or her.

WIP's, PIG's, what do those two stand for? Thanks

be a quilter 01-28-2011 06:39 AM

WIP - work in process
PIG - projects in grocery bags

That is what I heard.

For those of us who are just getting started (please forgive me) what are WIP's and UFO's. Acronyms are not good for newbies at least not this one, I don't understand them all. Is there an abrevation guide somewhere that can help? Thanks

Grandma Peg 01-28-2011 06:53 AM

Welcome to quilting!!

I fall in the with the rest. I think unless it is something I HAVE to get done, I would rather have a few things going at once; it gives a little interest. I seem to get bored easily these days so I am always looking at new projects. I do try to keep the WIPs at a minimum and discipline myself though, sometimes it just does not work.

KathyKat 01-28-2011 06:58 AM

So far I'm a serial quilter. However I want to start a Grandmother's Flower garden quilt so that I have some hand sewing to take with me when traveling or when sitting around visiting with family and friends. So will that then count as a WIP so I can leave the dreaded wierdo designation? lol!

lillybeck 01-28-2011 07:00 AM

This is funny. Welcome to the real world of quilting.

Minnisewta 01-28-2011 07:04 AM

LOL, I counted mine yesterday. I have at least 9 projects going right now. I'm good at starting but not so good at finishing.

meistarri 01-28-2011 07:18 AM

I saw some needles on TV tonight that threaded without having to find the hole. I wish they'd make for the sewing machine.[/quote]

I believe I have seen self-threading needles for the machine. Can't tell you where, sorry. I love the self-threaders for burying threads from machine quilting. No need for long thread tails....

gnewk 01-28-2011 07:21 AM

ditto, I hear ya!!!☺

skitter 01-28-2011 07:27 AM

Thank you so much this is very helpful.

I have 7 quilt tops done, but not layered for quilting yet because they are not designated for anyone yet. I am working on a civil war quilt and a baby quilt at the same time...just praying I get them both done in time. Oh so true. I love your smile.

Schmetz makes a machine needle that is quick threading. I purchased a pack at Joann's on sale of course:-) . Just tried threading one and it is a breeze:-P . Haven't given it a test drive yet.
I too have a sizable collection of WIP's, UFO's, and PIGS.
This is the year to I have dedicated to getting as many of them finished as possible. Oh, that doesn't even count my stash and the quilts in my head:oops: . I am destined to becoming a sew and sew.

so glad to have you on board with the rest of us

cosyquilter 01-28-2011 09:05 AM

OK, I get UFO, unfinished objects, WIP work in progress,. PIG's, project in gracery bag but what is the differene between WIP and UFO? PIG: fabric purchased but still in the bag?

SandyQuilter 01-28-2011 09:06 AM

I asked my students to count their projects. Largest number was 35. I counted mine and was at 36. Finished on since, but have added another 2 BOMs that are arriving in the mail too frequently. Will stock pile on until I've finished several quilts.

Yes, I love new colors, fabrics and design my own also.

Always remember the one woman years ago who come into my quilt store. She said her "husband wouldn't allow her to make more than one at a time." Not in my lifetime!

Many projects keep me busy and interested.

Sandy

A UFO, to me, is one that has been put aside for one reason or another. A WIP is one I am actively working on over a period of time. We need to come up with POTB (Projects On The Brain) of which I have millions.

catrancher 01-28-2011 09:15 AM

I used to finish one before starting on the next, but I like having many projects going. I get bored working on the same one all the time. I currently have three awaiting quilting, but we are traveling and so I plan to do those next when we get home in March. I don't want to allow finished tops to pile up waiting for quilting. I can honestly say mine are all WIP's. None are what I would call UFO's.

IBQUILTIN 01-28-2011 10:01 AM

Like you, I thought I finished one first, then on to the next. NOT I don't even know how many are piled up in there

quilter1943 01-28-2011 10:07 AM

Welcome! You're a true quilter now. I also have some tops I started years ago. More than likely I've used the remaining fabric for something else, so some may never be finished.

Ethel Hoffman 01-28-2011 02:13 PM

I too have trouble threading the hand needles I like to sew with but I spent about 15.00 bucks and bought a Clover needle threader and it works great I am not trying to sell their products just another old quilter who needed their kind of help

glenda 01-28-2011 04:41 PM

Have you tried the needles with the slot on the top for threading? I have trouble getting the thread through the eye, too. They really do work.
