When I first started on this board back in December I thought what the heck is a WIP - and then someone explained it to me....then I thought "how on earth can you have more than one project at a time going on" - just finish the one you were working on before moving to the next.

Well....I currently have 7 WIP's...in various forms and stages and abandonded for various reason - I need binding...I need a strap for the tote bag; I ran out of that color thread; I got bored.....

So here it is I'M SORRY....I'm sorry for silently chastising all of you for your WIP's and thinking you were crazy for not finishing what you started before you began something else. I'M SORRY....I have officially joined the ranks of WIP Woman!!! (in more ways than one!) :lol:

Hello and welcome. When I started quilting I would finish each project too. Now there are WIP and UFOs everywhere. Sigh.

Lol I have one I started on 24 years ago king size all hand pieced and put together most of the quilting is done but I put it away and forget about it because I have so much trouble threading the eye of the needle just can't see that tiny eye any more.

I think one of the reasons for WIP is the excitement of discovering another quilt pattern you saw and want to make or a quilt design we dreamed up or a piece of fabric that just has to be made up NOW, or the gift you have to create in just a week or so...the reasons are many. I have 7 quilt tops done, but not layered for quilting yet because they are not designated for anyone yet. I am working on a civil war quilt and a baby quilt at the same time...just praying I get them both done in time. I fight going on to another project before finishing the one I am working on, but I lose the battle at times. Oh, how we love our art form, don't we?

it keeps us entertained each day :) I think each project can be a "bright shiny object" on any given day (today pink/black is what my mind wanted, so my pink/black project was my bright-shiny, tomorrow will probably be red-white-blue) Welcome to the club!!!

I said the same thing when I first started quilting! :lol: I think having WIP, UFO's, PIGS, etc is a prerequisite here!!

I'm starting to join the crowd of WIPers, too. With me it's time constraints. I put aside the ones with no deadline to keep the others with deadlines on track.

I saw some needles on TV tonight that threaded without having to find the hole. I wish they'd make for the sewing machine.

OK, I think I have had WIP's and UFO's almost since I started, but this year I vow to finish some. So far 1 done, 1 almost(wallhanging needs a sleeve) and 1 that just needs binding (finished quilting today). If I can finish just one between each new project, I think I can get about 1/2 of them done this year. I may have a lot to donate to charity because I've lost interest in them or don't know what I was thinking when I started some, but I will finish them. Then I will have more room for stash, or just to move around in my sewing room.

Now that it is in writing, it will have to be done.LOL

I always wanted a pet pig and never lived where I could have one but, since I got into quilting, I have several laying on the bed in my guest bedroom!

LOL, welcome to our fresh H.E. Double Hockey Sticks ;) We've all been down here sweating for years... it's nice to see some new comers :-D down here. Congratulations on joining the ranks. I promise, there will be many, many more of these. These WIP's and/or UFO's - as I've said in a previous thread are expressions of creativity that have been birthed but not yet born. Once day, they will be born and will come into the light with specific purpose, and be the vision of completion you desire!

Now the hardest thing is too recognize when there are TOO MANY, and you need to either finish some, pass them on to someone else, or just throw them out.

That's the point I am at right now. I have 14 UFOs and WIPs and no room for more. And yet I am temted by new patterns every day. It's a dilemma.

Ah, so many quilt patterns..so little time. Hence forth WIPs.

If I didn't have WIPs, I could never justify my fabric stash. I have more than 30 WIPs, not to mention all the projects in my head that led to the purchase of fabric in the first place. :)

I was going to say "only 14" but I think I got beat out by 30. Mine is more like about 20. But I am going to wittle that down to 10 this year and I AM keeping that resolution! LOL

Welcome to the club! I live about 50 miles from anything related to quilt shopping so if I need anything I either have to plan to get it while I'm out or plan another shopping trip or order it. So...if I find I can't do one thing, I try to find something else to do with what I have until I can get what I need to do the other project. Hence, several WIPs which can sometimes become UFOs...but that's another subject. I got very excited one day just before Christmas on finding that my husband had to travel close to LQS for work. So I sent him with a list. The LQS owner laughed and said "I see you have a list". She graciously helped him and he came home with exactly what I asked for. I was happy!

I actually like to have several projects going at once. I love having things in different stages so if I feel like handquilting I have a quilt in my hoop, if I feel like peicing I have my unfinished top to work on, I plan on starting some sort of hand piecing or hand applique project so I have a travel project and now I add LAing projects to the mix. I find it is much harder to get bored with any one project that way. The ones that are nagging at me are the UFO's that I started piecing and then just kind of abandoned. One of them I have a good excuse, it is a scrappy log cabin and I ran out of logs, but I have since added to the stash of scrap logs and really need to pull that one out and work on it. Then I have a quilt I call "Norwegian Forest Cats" that has been a poor UFO in the drawer for several years. It is a bunch of different sized pine tree blocks and a bunch of cat blocks that are all the same size. I am going to have to get real creative with sashing and filler blocks to get that one to work. No pattern of course. I am still mulling over how to arrange them and put them all together as well as trying decide do I want this to be a wall hanging or beef it up to lap quilt size. That particular project has been nagging at the back of my mind for a while now. Unfortunately the fabrics I have picked out for other projects are calling to me so my poor Wegie quilt will languish away.

Pamkasperi, I think I'm a lot like you were. I usually finish what I started, but I think I can see that some day that will probably change. I do get excited about wanting to make a new pattern or use a new fabric. So far, I've made myself finish what I'm working on, but the wait gets harder. Plus, I start to hate the current project, because it's not done, and I want to move on. Then I hurry it up, and I know I could have done better if I had only slowed down and taken my time.

does anyone know how to find out if disabled vets accept quilts in their therapy or how to contact. i would be interested in donating some in the kansas city area. erma bauer

I am presumingh a WIP is what we call UFO's here in Australia... an UnFinished Object? I felt the same as you, and I STILL prefer to finish then start next project, but since I started quilting, other than my first ever quilt, I always have a UFO!!

Irishrose was asking about "cheater" needles, and whether you can get them in machine needles. Yes, you can. A friend of mine has them. Just ask at your LQS. I use the ordinary hand needles and I wouldn't use anything else. Even been known to use them for hand quilting!

They now have self threading or easy threading needles in Joann's plus lots of threading helpers some that are decorative.

There's a new needle on the market ------- called a cheater needle, that tiy can thread with ease - no trying to find that timy hole. Do a search on Google by typing in "cheater needles".

You are forgiven! I didn't realize I had WIPS! Then I came across a bin pushed into a corner that hadn't been opened in a while. 7 quilts at difference stages! I'm not down to 3 that just need quilting. Oh, but I just pinned a new one on the board. DArn, back to 4!

Let's just face up to it people....We all suffer from ADD to a certain extent :roll: After all we are artists....and our mind just races with ideas. I end up with WIPs because some glitch comes along ie when I was working on the silk quilt I had to order the silk velvet backing and the silk embroidery floss so I just HAD to be doing something while waiting. So on comes the seashell quilt. Then I ran out of blue thread during one of our snowstorms and couldn't get out to find more. So another one was started. Then I went back to the silk quilt....and on and on and on and on it goes...... :roll: :lol:

DH asked when I was going to finish my WIPs. When I responded I would finish them someday his comment was, "MY dear, you're running out of somedays. Cheater needles are great for working those little ends of thread between the layers.
