Wonder Clips, Glue, or Both?
Once you have sewn and folded over your binding and you are getting ready to do the final stitching of the binding to the back, do you use "Wonder Clips," a glue stick, Elmer's liquid glue, just your fingers, or any combination of the above?

I sew my bias binding on the back, not using anything except my fingers. Then I sew it down by machine on the front. I love the Wonder Clips, for holding the binding in place while I am sewing it on the top. The small measurements on the clips are very helpful. When mitering the corners, I have to have a straight pin for that.

I pin one side at a time and then use Elmer's washable, set it with
the iron. Remove pins as I go. Do all sides then off to the machine. SID on the front so it catches the back. |
I do it like Barb in Louisiana except I hold it with my fingers when I sew the front. I bought a set of wonder clips to use for binding the front but I've never opened the package, just used to how I do it I guess.

I use binding clips. I have 5 to 10 pinned about every inch or two when I'm binding.
I make large quilts and I just don't trust the new low flow washing machines will get all of the glue out. I even took a quilt to a nice laundromat's big washer to wash it and it ended up smelling like someone else's detergent. This has happened twice. I use Tide Free since I'm allergic to most fragrances. Ewwww Clips work for me. |
I meant to say I use Wonder Clips.

I use wonder clips for machine sewing the front. I glue the final join the way Sharon Schamber does. Then Wonder Clips again while I hand sew the binding to the back.

I've done all of the above. Now for a really nice quilt I use wonder clips and hand stitch the back
For a heavy use utility quilt, I use elmer's and machine stitch from the front. Since developing arthritis in my thumbs, it's easy use for the thumbs and never do it with just fingers. Also, since getting older and still having way too many to finish in my life time, it's the fastest way possible. My happy part of the quilt is the design. Finishing is the grunt work. |
I like to use pins. I don't use my flower shaped pins as they bend doing binding but I use my other yellow headed pins that are stronger. I pin as far as I have pins for at my table and then sit in my comfortable easy chair to hand sew the binding to the back.
