Wonder Clips, Glue, or Both?
Once you have sewn and folded over your binding and you are getting ready to do the final stitching of the binding to the back, do you use "Wonder Clips," a glue stick, Elmer's liquid glue, just your fingers, or any combination of the above?

I sew my bias binding on the back, not using anything except my fingers. Then I sew it down by machine on the front. I love the Wonder Clips, for holding the binding in place while I am sewing it on the top. The small measurements on the clips are very helpful. When mitering the corners, I have to have a straight pin for that.
I pin one side at a time and then use Elmer's washable, set it with
the iron. Remove pins as I go. Do all sides then off to the machine. SID on the front so it catches the back. |
I do it like Barb in Louisiana except I hold it with my fingers when I sew the front. I bought a set of wonder clips to use for binding the front but I've never opened the package, just used to how I do it I guess.

I use binding clips. I have 5 to 10 pinned about every inch or two when I'm binding.
I make large quilts and I just don't trust the new low flow washing machines will get all of the glue out. I even took a quilt to a nice laundromat's big washer to wash it and it ended up smelling like someone else's detergent. This has happened twice. I use Tide Free since I'm allergic to most fragrances. Ewwww Clips work for me. |
I meant to say I use Wonder Clips.
I use wonder clips for machine sewing the front. I glue the final join the way Sharon Schamber does. Then Wonder Clips again while I hand sew the binding to the back.

Wonder clips

I've done all of the above. Now for a really nice quilt I use wonder clips and hand stitch the back
For a heavy use utility quilt, I use elmer's and machine stitch from the front. Since developing arthritis in my thumbs, it's easy use for the thumbs and never do it with just fingers. Also, since getting older and still having way too many to finish in my life time, it's the fastest way possible. My happy part of the quilt is the design. Finishing is the grunt work. |
I like to use pins. I don't use my flower shaped pins as they bend doing binding but I use my other yellow headed pins that are stronger. I pin as far as I have pins for at my table and then sit in my comfortable easy chair to hand sew the binding to the back.
I always held the binding with my hands and thought that was just fine, until I tried the Wonder Clips. I love them! I sew to the back by hand, and now my hands don't get as tired when binding.
I use Wonder Clips along the edges, pins for mitering corners. I admit this is the first I've heard of using glue to hold the binding down before sewing. Might try it!
I just machine sew my bindings to the back, flip and sew it down on the front with machine.

Hand stitch the back of my bindings and use only the Wonder Clips. I love those things! :)
I use them too. I'm going to get some of the bigger ones for putting together knitting projects, now.
I have tried the wonder clips, because everyone was saying how they loved them, I hated them and gave them to a friend, who also hated them and passed them along. I do use liquid Elmer's glue though, but not on the bindings, for bindings, I use pins.
I use wonder clips, machine stitch the top and hand stitch the back on all my quilts.
I use Wonder Clips. I found a you tube tutorial where she doesn't pin at all and wasn't sure how it would work. (Binding has never been my strong suit). I used her method and 1 or 2 binder clips-as I go I keep moving the clips down while holding the binding strip. I am very happy with the results. I do pin at the corners so I know where to pivot. So much easier!
I use wonder clips also and hand stitch to the back. I love the clips and my favorite part of doing a quilt is the binding. I know many don't like doing that but for me it is very relaxing and since I can no longer hand quilt it fills that need.

i use my fingers, or occasionally pins
I use and love Wonder clips and my fingers.

I machine sew the binding on the front, iron all edges out (for a crisp edge) then use these hair clips to hold it in place on the back so I can hand stitch.
I stared using them before I knew Wonder-Clips existed. |
I love those wonder clips. It never occurred to me to use glue- good tip!
I machine sew the binding to the front and hand sew the back. I can never get the stitch line on the front to look right or catch the back. I even used a decorative stitch one time but it still didn't come out well. |
Glue for me - I fold over and press the sewn on binding, add a thin line of glue to keep it perfectly in place then sew with no pins or clips in my way.
I use the 'hair' clips and love them. i did buy some red wonder clips but moved and now can't find most of them. either works well but I do love the silver ones best!
I glue and iron to set the glue, then hand sew to the back.
Susan Schamber has a great video on this technique. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2hWQ5-ZccE Watson |
I use wonder clips and love them. BTW- the generic ones sold for an amazing price on Amazon are identical to Clover Wonder Clips. Mine are all mixed together and I cannot tell the difference except the colors are slightly different! I use them at the intersections when piecing quilts, as well. They are a wonderful invention!
Watson, I also use Sharon Schamber's method and have for years. When I hand sew to the back I use hair clips
Pins on the back and hand stitch the binding. There is seldom a rush to my quilt making experience -- I enjoy every step of the process as I revisit times spent with my grandmother on the farm.
Just my fingers...but a pin for the corners.

It looks like more and more of us are first stitching to the back, then using various methods to stitch on the top front. I love using the flange method which looks great on the front BUT the back does not look so great - another row of stitches, but wonky. I've used glue, clips and pins. Any suggestions?
Lots of wonder clips.

I have to admit, I'm another of those who can't sew on my binding and get a nice straight seamline. I never thought of using glue , so I just pin and hand stitch on the back. Tiring, but it works for me.
I love wonder clips but not for binding. I pin the binding on with the quilt lying flat to machine stitch it on which prevents stretching the quilt or binding. I then us the 1/2 inch applique pins to pin it. My thread does not get hung up on the small pins.
I have a friend who makes lots of donation quilts. She uses fusible thread, sets it with the iron and serpentines stitches the binding down. She just flies.
