Totally curious on where you are using the vice grips in your quilting?
:-P LOL. I had to get my dad's little vice grips from his toybox - I mean TOOLbox - to hold the corners. I had no idea how to do corner binding (still don't, actually) and had a big bunch of material to hold together until I could google binding and corners. Since then, I also use them to hold my backing down to the ping pong table instead of tape when I sandwich.

Why are you having problems with corner binding.....do you need help or have you fingured that one out.

It was my first quilt and I was totally in "learn after I go" mode (instead of "learn AS I go" even). I rolled up all the sides and held them with clothespins, but then had huge chunks of fabric and batting at each corner.

Yeah, I found a tutorial on YouTube before I put thread to fabric, thank God. What a mess it would have been. But thank you!!

Deborahlees 06-03-2011 06:52 AM

Hey I started with clothespins....years ago thats all we had....time is a great teacher. I feel very greatful when I have finished a quilt and learned something in the process. That is one of the reasons I try a new pattern every month....to learn

FAYE 06-03-2011 06:58 AM

I used the wonder clips on a quilt project...each blk has 6 pieces-4colors & I have cut each unit-clipped together, now have it set aside-ready to sew...I like them

IBQUILTIN 06-03-2011 07:14 AM

I use glue baste it, and heat set the binding, stays right where I want it

QKO 06-03-2011 07:24 AM

We use these little metal clips and really like them. They're dollar-store cheap too, about 6 to a dollar in a pack of 30.

I never use anything but my thumb to hold down the binding as I sew it down. I use 2-1/2" double binding so, to me, it's not wide enough to need pinning or fastening down before sewing.

margie77072 06-03-2011 08:19 AM

use binder clips, cheaper, you get a lot for a little money and if you're worried about rust stains use fabric scraps between the clip and the quilt. works great!

Anna.425 06-03-2011 08:35 AM

I have a really great set of tools that I use for holding my projects. Some of them are antiques and were handed down from my grandmother who used them to hold her projects, they are called PINS, and they are still the least expensive tool to use.

Deborahlees 06-03-2011 08:35 AM

Good old fashioned clothes pins work great. I use the wood ones and write on them. left, right, top, bottom, corner.....and super cheap...

DebsShelties 06-03-2011 08:40 AM

I wonder if regular clothes pins would work. They come in wood or plastic so no rust stains.

misseva 06-03-2011 08:49 AM

Looks like the very small binder clips you find at office supply stores would work. I buy them here at work on sale for less than $1 for 12. But - I use the clips that look like hair clips and I'm sure I bought them from a quilt place and paid much more for them. Sorry if someone has already suggested this - didn't have time to read all.

Carol Jean 06-03-2011 08:51 AM

Yes, I use the large & small hair clips at Family Dollar and they work great! Saves a lot of money.

Deborahlees 06-03-2011 09:22 AM

It is so important for us Quilters to think outside the box. Paperclips, clothespins, binderclips are were not made for quilting but work so well...and all else fails....a hammer !!!!!!!

T. 06-03-2011 09:32 AM

What is the ladder stitch? I just use the zigzag stitch and pretend that's part of the pattern :)
Couldn't you use the clothe pins, or the bag clips from Dollar store?

mshawii 06-03-2011 09:36 AM

I use the hair snaps that snap when you close them. Light weight and only need a small box of them. I bought then in the hair department of the cosmetics area. They carry the same thing at quilt stores but for a lot more money. Mine were cheaper for the same thing. Jan

Love your kitten. How old is it? Looks just like my new kitten that is 10 weeks old. Aren'tthey great!!!

Suzy 06-03-2011 10:34 AM

I use elmers school glue, that way I don't even need pins. There are you tube videos or different sites that have free videos to see how easy it is with this method.

I've had my "hair clips" for long time, but recently bought some at Walmart for my friend. They were cheap and work great.

Marysewfun 06-03-2011 01:35 PM

I just saw a bag of clips that looked soooo much like that at the Dollar Store - but they were packaged as clothespins - so help me, they looked just like that. I almost bought a bag, now I'll go back and look again and maybe get a couple of bags.

Yes, I know they are expensive. I am aware of that. Just want to know whether any other notions junkies (like me!) have tried them and what you thought. And yes, I know they are expensive.

I just use small 'binder' clips. I like the fact that I can put the little 'legs' down over the edges, and not tangle my thread around them as I hand stitch the binding down to the back. At about $2.00, the price is right too.

Hope you have better luck than I do, when ever I go back, looking for 'them' again...they're gone...no where in sight !!!

I had not seen them before, but looks like a good product.

These are exactly what I use for hemming & bindings and love them! :D

I went to Sally supply and bought the alligator clips

Quilter2B 06-03-2011 09:08 PM

Those are pretty cool looking. I don't think I'd use them though unless I could get them cheaper. I use those silver clips that look like hair barretts

Wow, great idea. I'll stop there tomorrow.

Pat G 06-04-2011 11:51 AM

I'm with Kitsie. I find the hair clips work just fine.

MisDixie 06-04-2011 12:05 PM

Got my hair clips at Feilds. They had square shaped ones and the hold binding very well. Also check the drug store. I have seen them there and this is smaller than small town here.

Would you believe they don't sell those silver hair clips here? Same for
buttons. Can't find a darn button in town. I have a fairly big collection of
buttons but you know Murphy's Law...never in the right size or colour. LOL

I still love the little cheapies you can get at the beauty supply to put hair bows on. And most of the time I don't even use them because I press the binding over and it doesn't need much holding. froggyintexas

marlene tarzwell 06-04-2011 08:50 PM

I have hundreds of those smaller clips, plus a bunch of bigger ones too. I bought them at one of our flea markets. all for a $1.00 for a pack of 12 or 24. I love them and use them a lot.

vegasgal47 06-04-2011 10:16 PM

I use the silver hair clips also. Very inexpensive and they work great.

Marysewfun 06-06-2011 03:23 PM

vegasgal47 - love your two "angels" - look like they are charging their batteries for the next devilish thing they can think of. :-)

haver never seen these--I think they would be useful. I am also a 'Notion Junkie', but I prefer the metal ones that are similar to the bendable barrettes in the 60's.

Me too and a girlfriend doesn't use any and her binding looks fine. I just like them
