I am trying to applique some shapes onto an "I Spy" quilt.... ugh... I have ironed the wonder-under (fusible web) onto the fabric, and now I can get the paper off. What am I doing wrong, any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Quilter1234

Can't help with the wonder-under, but I love your avatar.

dogsgod 09-19-2010 09:13 AM

make sure it is really cool, then roll a corner or edge until the paper separates. I have had this problem when I am in too much of a hurry. It has to cool down entirely before you try to split the layers.

QuiltswithConvicts 09-19-2010 09:16 AM

I have encountered that same problem often. I take a straight pin and scratch the paper backing in the middle, ripping it a little. Grab one of the torn edges and pull off what you can. Continue until it's all off.

Also, re-ironing it can help it release. You can try to roll a corner/point between your thumb & forefinger to see if it will begin to release. This only seems to happen to me when the Wonder Under is new. With the older stuff (really old) the paper didn't want to stay stuck to the webbing long enough to get it ironed to the fabric. However, when finally ironed down, it did release nicely. Go figure.

pookie ookie 09-19-2010 09:52 AM

Never had the problem. Are you removing it right away? I always wander off and do something else for a bit.

franie 09-19-2010 09:54 AM

Some of the glue is stronger than others. Steam a seam lite has my vote.

KathyAire 09-19-2010 10:00 AM

It definitely has to cool down completely. I really like to iron it and leave it overnight. It is so frustrating when it doesn't peel off properly.

Pam B 09-19-2010 10:09 AM

I try to let mine sit for awhile before removing the paper. Actually, I will often wait till the next day.

This is what I do also. Haven't had any problems.

On the same subject, the instructions refer to the iron being "hot" (or is it "warm?") and I always wonder why they don't just say "cotton setting" or "Wool setting." It seems to me they used to specify.
I too have had trouble with the peeling, and I thought perhaps
(A) I was using the wrong temperature iron,
(B) the wonder under was old,
(C) I pressed it too long, or
(D) I didn't press it long enough.
So I'm interested to hear your responses.

Occasionally, I have had the same problem with wonder-under. I usually just try another corner or different place on the piece if it is stubborn. Do let it cool. And thanks for the idea to slide a straight pin under it to loosen it. Great idea.

leatheflea 09-19-2010 10:56 AM

Make sure its cooled for quite awhile. I let mine set for an hour or so while I do other things.

I lightly score the center of the wonder under paper with a pin. Stay away from trying this on the sides, as you can fray your fabric or stretch it

That would have been my answer too.

The temperature depends on the fabric you are using it with. If they said "cotton setting" and you used it on silk, you'd have a mess. I believe it says the hottest setting for the fabric used, but I'm too lazy to go dig it out and look.

I was too lazy, too. Thanks for your input!

I take a straight pin and scratch the paper backing in the middle and it comes up a little at a time,

Mariposa 09-19-2010 12:41 PM

I just use Steam-a-Seam 2 Lite. Lots less hassle~

quilt queen 2 09-19-2010 01:19 PM

A lady at my guild says she puts it in the freezer overnight says it works great!

sdeaaz 09-19-2010 03:27 PM

I had to switch to a generic brand that I bought at Hobby Lobby.... I used the product the very same way... I did let it cool a little longer... but not an hour... it peeled fine.... maybe my wonder-under is old. I did email Pellon, so we'll see what they say. Quilter 1234

I finally got tired of fighting Wonder Under and started using Misty Fuse. I love this stuff. The hand is amazing, it doesn't gum up my needle and it stays stuck.

Dodie 09-19-2010 06:28 PM

I have also had so many problems with wonder under so I switched to heat and bond lite make sure it is the lite as the regular is for crafts and will really gum up the needle anyway no more problems works much better

renda 09-20-2010 03:09 AM

You must use a dry iron. NO STEAM. I keep one iron for day and one for steam. Sure solved alot of problems for me. Also use the pen to scratch in the middle.

Marge L. 09-20-2010 03:35 AM

Wonder Under is the only one I have used for years. When that happens, I figured that my iron was too hot. Not sure, but as all are saying, let it cool a while. Also found that counting off the seconds so you don't iron too long. Works for me. Good luck. Know it's frustrating.

I will be curious to see what they say. I , like yourself and many others, have had this happen - my solution is to let is cool completely - then if it is still misbehaving (lol) I hold the edge - paper side up and pinch is - making a fold in the paper and then roll it between my fingers. Once you have released one edge the rest peals off just fine.

Chatfield 09-20-2010 06:20 AM

I do the pin trick as well. It works....

grannypat7925 09-20-2010 06:48 AM

If you can't get the paper off, try scoring the paper with a straight pin, crease at the score mark and peel back from there. This is what I do and it works.

Lori S 09-20-2010 07:08 AM

I have had this frustration with Wonder Under. I re- iron and put it in the freezer . It works to separate the paper from the fusible since they react differnently to the cold.

Or if you press it too long - that makes it stick, too.

lynnie 09-20-2010 10:32 AM

I've switched to heat and bond, it seems to work better for me, i have the same probs you do with it

merridancer 09-20-2010 10:36 AM

I scunch it all up in a ball, then open it up. Something will separate naturally and I go from that point.

Other times, try scoring in the middle and peel it from there.

ghostrider 09-20-2010 10:39 AM

I've used Wonder-Under for years and have never had the paper stick, ever. I tried Steam-a-Seam2 Lite, Heat'n'Bond, and something else before I found Wonder-Under. Funny how some people swear by one brand and others by another. Good thing there's a choice, eh? :D

mshawii 09-20-2010 10:40 AM

Make sure you are using the right side to start with. Yes there is a difference. If there is paper in both sides, then remove the one that comes off the easiest. then fuse onto fabric. Also you may be holding the iron on too long. Check your instructions!

bels 09-20-2010 11:58 AM

Scoring with a straight pin works pretty good. Just score a line and peel paper away from the tear. Once you start the tear it is easy to remove the rest of the paper.

Moon Holiday 09-20-2010 12:15 PM

Sometimes when you iron wonder under too long (and too hot) it can become a horror to remove the paper... go back and read the instructions and try to follow them carefully. I ran into that problem several years ago... guess I got too cocky and thought I didn't need to read the instructions because I had been using it for quite some time. Apparently I was wrong! Now I try to read fusible instructions at least every other time I use it, just to be sure I don't have to re-live that nightmare again where paper becomes one with the fusible/fabric.

Annz 09-20-2010 05:02 PM

Let everything cool down for a few minutes or so then stick a straigt pin in the middle and pull. It will seperate and then pick and pull out all the pieces.

Edogirl 09-20-2010 05:54 PM

I had the same problem. Luckily, it was only with my test piece. I applied it, let it cool and it was still a pain to remove. Still, it worked and I couldn't thing of anything else I could use so I bit the bullet and applied it to all the pieces I had ready and waiting. Not wanting to face picking the paper off that evening, I left it until the next day. What a difference a day made, it peeled off all the pieces so easily it was like using a different product. My recommendation? Leave it at least overnight.

costumegirl 09-20-2010 08:05 PM

Leaving it sit and cool for awhile has worked for me.

jitkaau 09-20-2010 09:40 PM

Score the back of the paper with a pin so that you are actually cutting it, and it should come off then.Wait until it cools before you fiddle with it after ironing.

Dee 09-21-2010 07:44 PM

Thanks for sharing. Maybe this has been my problem.
