Wooden spools

Hi everyone. I have many wooden spools. When I cleaned out my mother's apartment and my aunts house, I found a lot of spools of thread that have wooden spools. I have been gradually using up the thread and now have a stach of wooden spools. Does anyone know what I can do with them. Seems a shame to throw them away.
Thanks
Rita

I saved my grandmother's wooden spools. My kids use to play blocks with them, string them with shoe laces and played bowling with the spools and a tennis ball. They are now in a clear vase and makes a pretty sewing room decoration.

Type "ideas for wooden spools" in Google. I did and it responded with lots of sites.

I have a very large old fashion pickle jar/jug about 20 " tall (clear) and I put them all in there ~ quite the conversation piece !
I enjoy looking at them in their various stages and yes when in need I do dig through it looking for a specific color. Never had the threads break -- I guess its still good ! And the grandchildren play with them too !

scouts & 4-H groups are generally very interested in taking them for projects if you want to pass them on- check with local scout groups- or even the public school -pre-school, elementary teachers & art departments---since schools have lost so much funding often teachers have to come up with supplies out of their own pockets- they appreciate donations.

Years ago I bought my niece a "spool bed" for her dollies .... yes, made out of old wooden spools!

Now I wish I had it and I'd make miniature quilts for it.

I always used old wooden spools to wind embroidery floss on.

Suze9395 07-23-2012 04:39 PM

I have a bunch too. Unfortunately, most of the thread is too old to use. I have decided to decoupage some of them and use them as the knobs on the cabinets we recently put up in my sewing area. I think the different thread colors will be pretty.

Wonder what the base for the wreath is?

mom-6 07-23-2012 06:32 PM

I like the dolls made from wooden spools.

barny 07-23-2012 06:35 PM

People used to collect them like they do buttons. Don't know if they do now or not. I don't know where you would look either.

I got all of these at a garage sale for $3! There is over 10 # of spools in that basket. In the second picture, I took some fabric scraps and wrapped it around some old plastic spools and glued in in place. I have those in a little glass jar. Pretty to look at!

My daughter has a collection of wooden spools. She would love to add to her collection.

Don't throw them out, they are worth money. I have a box with wooden spools and put a note on it for when I am gone for my children to not throw thme out.

I currently have mine in a gallon jar waiting for a project ... and the time to do the project! The make nice wreaths! You can stain them, use them as they are, or wrap bits of fabric around them to match your decor or holiday choice.

I have been in the process of redoing my sewing room and have many wooden spools from my husbands grandmother. I modgepodged the thread on and am using them for drawe pulls, the look really cute, I saw in on sewmanyways.

calicojoan 07-25-2012 04:16 AM

I bought a large old looking canning jar and filled it with wooden spools. You can find the tops with wicks online for them, and fill them with lamp oil. It makes a fun hurricane lamp!

They actually have almost no value as collectibles. Only the very old ones before paper labels and in excellent condition are worth anything and you have to sell them in bulk to make any money on it. There's a healthy craft market for wooden spools, but that's about all.

rush88888 07-25-2012 04:28 AM

i would be interested in purchasing them if you are willing to sell.

Latrinka 07-25-2012 04:29 AM

I would probly donate them to a church for vacation bible school kids to make stuff with.

helenquilt 07-25-2012 04:43 AM

As a child we made dolls out of them. We used a very heavy thread or thin wire putting buttons at the end of the arms, feet and big button for a hat.

Donnamarie 07-25-2012 04:57 AM

I purchased a wooden spool Christmas tree ornament at a quilt show once. It had painted flowers on it. Every year I take it out and just love it!

matraina 07-25-2012 05:17 AM

My sister-in-law, who collects antiques, told me they would be valuable some day.

Noiseynana 07-25-2012 05:19 AM

You could send them to me. hehehehe and I'll pay postage.

I am thinking about making a thread spool garland for my mantle for the holidays.

Treasureit 07-25-2012 06:26 AM

My husband's grandfather made a table and used the larger wooden spools to make the legs...sounds weird now, but it looked really cool. He also made an inlaid top for it.

I took them to a kindergarten class. Also they like egg cartons and empty paper towel rolls.

117becca 07-25-2012 06:34 AM

When i was in 4-H (way back in the dark ages ;) ) I took shoestring and strung spools together to make a doll. I put it into a kit used for babysitting - now it hangs on a what-not shelf.

I'd take a picture, but the room is filled w/ stuff from my bedroom while i'm staining woodwork.

noradi 07-25-2012 06:36 AM

I also put mine in a 1/2 gallon jar & put 1 of those lamp tops on it. My spools still have the thread on so it is quite colorful. Someday, I'm going to cover the shade in quilt fabric.
