Working with Minky material
 

Our family is being bless with twin boys, I have brought Minky material to make a baby quilts/blankets.
Is there anything I should know about how this Minky material will sew out. Should i do seams or not
I was thinking of adding cotton backing instead of the Minky material. Can I do a rag blanket with this material.
or hide the seams.
I am looking for anyone who can help me in how to make this for the twins.

I really like using Minky on the back of quilts. I am not sure how you are having it quilted but what I have learned is if you have the most stretch going left and right it quilts up wonderful. If you have the most stretch going up and down not so good it stretches out. Be sure and feel how it stretches and you will understand. What ever you decide I am sure will be wonderful!

PS Am not sure about making rag quilt with minky... I think it would shed too much. Will be interested in what everybody says about that.

minky would not make a good rag quilt because it is a knit fabric. woven fabric is used for ragging because the fibers come loose from the weave and make a 'fringe'.

Don't know if this would work. But it sure is a cute quilt/blanket for a little one.

There are probably many discussions in posts about quilting with Minky. You might want to look at them by going to the advance search. I tried sewing with Minky once and won't ever try it again. If you have a LAQ, you won't have as much of a stretch problem since the sewing machine glides over the quilt but with a DSM, I would suggest you keep the back with the Minky on top so prevent as little stretching as possible. I'm watching this thread with interest because I just bought some Minky to try out for baby quilts and I've never sewn with it either.

If it stretches when being quilted - does that mean FMQ is better for Minky than straight stitches w/a walking foot? Seems like that might help it stretch less. And probably spray basting would help, I'm thinking...

I just did 4 baby quilts that had minky in them as blocks and appliqué. I didn't have issues but I did use a walking foot. I also double check seams so there no scant ones with minky

I don't think Minky would work for a rag quilt-the cut edges just 'fall off' in short threads, they don't unravel, fray and stay attached to the body of the fabric like regular woven cotton fabric. But I have never tried it. I only made one quilt with Minky and it did OK, but I did find it frustrating to quilt with due to stretching and sliding around.

I have used minky many times for baby quilts and carseat blankets. I found that if you spray glue the mink to the quilt it keeps the stretch andbunching down. I'm planning on making a couple here in a couple months since I amdue in October. The boys will love it. Also there is differentypes of kinky the one that is soft on only one side is not as thick as the doublesidded soft ones.so they shift less. Hope this helps.
