Worried about my quilt

At the last minute I decided to make a baby quilt for my granddaughter who lives in Arizona - we are in Georgia. Her baby shower is today. I did what normally takes me 4 weeks sewing at my leisure in only 6 days. Have never sewn like that! Last Wednesday I sent the quilt with a stuffed animal and card/check via Priority Mail and was assured delivery would be this past Friday...that is also on my receipt. Whew, I made it! And with a day to spare.

But....Not only was it not delivered on Friday but not yesterday either. Breaking my heart. USPS Tracking says "delayed, in transit" as of noon yesterday. I signed up for delivery updates via text but have not received a revised delivery date. Now I am concerned it is lost/stolen. I also use UPS and FEDX for shipping but I went with Priority Mail as I had their perfect-sized box on hand.

Dolphyngyrl 02-11-2018 07:04 AM

If it says delayed it might be due to weather I wouldn't worry just yet

SusieQOH 02-11-2018 07:07 AM

That's disappointing for you but I don't think it's lost. Probably as Dolphyngyrl said.

Monika 02-11-2018 08:14 AM

So sorry to hear this. I understand the pressure you put on yourself and then through no fault of yours it falls through. I usually have good luck with Priority Mail, but have had delays. Let us know how it goes. I am sure the new mom will be so pleased that a few days delay won't even be a blip on her radar.

zozee 02-11-2018 08:27 AM

I know it's disappointing and kinda nerve-wracking, but I wouldn't worry about it being lost or stolen, because you do have a notification of it. It's just that USPS isn't what it used to be, not even in Priority Mail all the time. Maybe it will arrive today. Sometimes I get packages on Sunday.

LavenderBlue 02-11-2018 08:31 AM

Zozee, I was wondering last night if they ever do after-hours or Sunday delivery in case of delays. You give me hope!

meyert 02-11-2018 08:59 AM

I am sure you are disappointed. I have mail "delayed in transit" as well - - - I don't know what exactly happened. But that is why I like Fed Ex or UPS over the mail they seem to do better

that being said I don't think its lost. It will probably get there late which in itself can be disappointing but I think it is still safe

Annie68 02-11-2018 09:56 AM

Sorry your pkg didn't arrive as planned, so frustrating! Sure hope it gets there tomorrow. It is most likely weather related.

mermaid 02-11-2018 10:24 AM

Could the PO have contracted pkgs out to another carrier?? On Thursday nite, on I-40 west, in TN, near me, was a collision between FedEx and Freightliner...( one truck was merging from ramp into lane) local paper said "pkgs scattered all over the area. Drivers survived, but am not sure abt the pkgs. Sure hope yours was not among---don't know from where it was mailed.

quiltingcandy 02-11-2018 11:02 AM

Friday I got an e-mail from FedEx saying they have delays right now due to weather and there will be delays due to the Mardi Gras is LA - not sure what that has to do with it - but it was nice they let me know.

I suggest that you call USPS and have your tracking number on hand. It seems that the USPS distribution center in Phoenix is having ....... problems with packages going missing ...... ummmm I mean being delayed ... I have a package that was suppose to be delivered on Feb. 6th, tracking said it made it to the Phoenix distribution center and LEFT that center on Feb. 3rd., package did not arrive by the 6th and tracking now says delayed. BTW, I live in Tucson, AZ. which is 2 hours away from Phoenix. It does not take mail more than 2 days to go from Phoenix to Tucson. Unfortunately, for me, this has not been the first package to be lost ..... ummm delayed .... between the Phoenix distribution center and my home.

Boston1954 02-11-2018 12:27 PM

That happened to a Christmas package I sent to my parents once. What did I pay this amount for? They did get it the day after.

I'm sure your present will get there.

LavenderBlue 02-11-2018 01:11 PM

I read that you can get a refund but only for Priority Mail EXPRESS......I believe mine was regular PM.

jmoore 02-12-2018 03:14 AM

How disappointing for you. I can understand your concern but I’m sure it is safe, just late. I just sent a baby quilt to my DGS in Key West and opted for more insurance...just in case. : /

ArtsyOne 02-12-2018 03:54 AM

The post office must have had a bad week last week! I sent a package from Minnesota to Wisconsin and when it didn't get to its destination on the planned date, I started tracking it like you did (it also said "in transit - delayed". Mine went from Minnesota to Iowa, back to Minnesota, and then to another location in Wisconsin before finally getting to where it was supposed to go, 4 days late. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

coopah 02-12-2018 04:50 AM

So sorry your package didn’t make it in time for the shower. Please keep us updated. Things go awry, but here’s hoping that it did not go missing. Hugs!

junegerbracht 02-12-2018 05:06 AM

On a positive note - your gift will arrive after the fact and not be lost in the shuffle of all the other shower gifts. Downside is shower guests didn’t get to admire it. One way or the other your granddaughter will love it.

cook25526 02-12-2018 05:52 AM

I won’t send anything else via USPS. Recently I sent a quilt via 3 day priority US mail from SC to TX and it took 2 weeks to arrive.

Rennie 02-12-2018 06:05 AM

I ordered some special cream through Amazon (prime - 2 day delivery) needed for my Mom who is now in a nursing home. They sent it UPS and sent me the tracking number .... that was two weeks ago, and they have now advised the package is "missing" and I will not get it... and it is not available through a reorder. The tracking number shows it left the provider, but nothing else.

stichinluvr 02-12-2018 06:44 AM

It happens. We have packages that take the scenic route. Don't stress - she'll get it and love it.

LavenderBlue 02-12-2018 07:28 AM

Good News! I received a text update very early this morning from USPS saying the package arrived in the Phoenix distribution center last night at 7:38. What a relief. Was not given a new delivery date but my fears have vanished. Thanks for everyone's support and info!

Tartan 02-12-2018 07:35 AM

At least it's at the distribution center and I hope it arrives safely!

I had a UPS-like store for 29 years (an independent shop) and I still have on online store. I NEVER send anything weighing more than a couple pounds or valued at more than $40 thru the mail. It is not that they do not deliver a tremendous number of packages and letters, it is because if there is a problem, you do not get the responses you need or want. Folks think that UPS and Fed-X are so much more expensive - not so. What you are paying is the higher fees charged by the location you are going to. Go online, print your own label and pay online. Then you simply drop it off at any location FOR FREE. I often just hand my packages to the driver as he delivers other stuff. This also allows for exact day delivery info so you can alert the receiver as to when it will get there and they can make arrangements to be home. At this time of year, weather can be a concern, but delivery in bad weather is only rarely affected with UPS and Fed-X. And, you can use ANY box with them as long as it has a legible label - so use that priority mail box to ship with UPS or Fed-X! Also, with any carrier, lay a plastic bag inside the bottom to stop moisture and put a label inside the box just in case.

USPS does deliver on Sunday. I received a package yesterday. I had received one on a Sunday at Christmas time, but I wasn't aware that they did it year round. Your quilt is good hands.

MaryMo 02-12-2018 08:02 AM

I had a priority package that was shipped from a very small town post office on Jan. 15. Tracking showed it departed and then it dropped off the face of the earth. By Feb. 1 I had lost all hope of receiving the package ... even after filing forms with USPS (on line and at local post office). There was no response and local post office manager said he could not provide any information (what kind of customer service and job dedication is that?). Saturday, Feb. 10 it was quietly laid on my doorstep when the delivery postal worker normally knocks when he/she is delivering a package. I am happy about receiving the package but bewildered by the actions of USPS. In the last several days I have read about and seen videos of local postal workers dumping undelivered mail at various sites - apartment complex dumpsters, illegal dump sites and in black trash bags set out for local neighborhood waste pickup. This adds to my lack of faith in the postal system and further confirms that it is an outdated system full of lazy, undeserving workers. I hope your package is received very soon.

Boston1954 02-12-2018 08:15 AM

I'm so glad to hear it. Bet your blood pressure is going down.

LavenderBlue 02-12-2018 09:04 AM

Received another notice that the package is out for delivery today!! Although I am very relieved, I will consider this a warning to only use UPS and FEDX in the future. I also realize all carriers have problems at times.

cashs_mom 02-12-2018 01:43 PM

I"m glad you got an update. I recently had a USPS package take over 2 weeks to get from Cali to Houston. After 2 weeks I emailed the place I purchased from and they sent me another one out. Both packages arrived the same day. Go figure.

LavenderBlue 02-12-2018 02:46 PM

Oh Cash, that is ironic!

stitch678 02-12-2018 05:47 PM

The parcels do not ship directly. They first go to a sorting " hub",often located far away. Your parcel may be in the snowbound area north of you!

When I graduated high school I had to take civil service exam to even apply for a post office job. Nothing under a 85 was even considered for interview. Only the cream of the crop was acceptable. Now most of the workers are contract workers. The post master at our po said the new hires only have to pass a drug test and he hopes they can read at an 8th grade level.

lovingLakeMich 02-13-2018 03:41 AM

I'm glad your gift arrived safely. You can follow the trail with the tracking number. I once mailed a package in Michigan to go to Massachusetts. It went to Texas first then meandered to Massachusetts. I think it went on vacation.

susie reardon 02-13-2018 05:48 AM

Oh how frustrating it must be!!! you put so much work into it at a very fast pace only to have someone else delay it!! I am so sorry.
Think of how happy she will be to have another day to celebrate her baby!!!
Great job!!

sewbizgirl 02-13-2018 05:56 AM

"Delayed in Transit" seems to be a new postal class! It happens way too often and they can't blame it on the weather. It's the same weather we have every winter. USPS service just keeps getting worse and more unreliable, yet they pay their workers a very high hourly wage for unskilled labor, and they raise their postal rates regularly. It's outrageous.

grannie cheechee 02-13-2018 06:11 AM

I sent a Christmas card with ck Dec. 12th. Come to find out I put 6 instead of 5 for the address which is across the street. I kept checking with the bank to see if someone cashed it. I got the card back Sat.. According to the sticker put on by the post office it was sent back Jan. 3rd. Who knows where it was for 2 mos.. My check was still there, and it the envelope didn't look like it had been opened.

Lee in Richmond 02-13-2018 09:58 AM

I am glad you finally got notification that your quilt still exists. My story did not end quite so well -- after being marked delayed in transit it was finally declared to have been involved in an accident and nothing that was on the truck would be delivered (for whatever reason). But mine was not a handmade item.

SusieQOH 02-13-2018 02:12 PM

Lavender- I've sold on Ebay for many years and can honestly say a Priority package has never been lost.

LavenderBlue 02-13-2018 07:06 PM

Thanks Susie, that's good to know. ;-)

My husband has done some online sales the last few years. He's had really good luck with priority mail. Occasionally, something like this happens and something is delayed. I don't think anything has ever been lost though.
