Wow -- this site makes even my quilts look great!!!

janedennis 05-25-2009 08:24 AM

You people are BADDDD. Imagine if one of those people are on here and reading what you are saying. Everyone is not as gifted as you all are. We all have to start somewhere and not everyone has the craftiness in their soul but we all need to give them an E for effort and call it a day. They won a prize with their craft, even tho its for being the worst, did we?

You never saw a picture of mine. Maybe because I am ashamed to put a picture on here, you maybe say nice compliments but do you mean it.

Jane, the thing with that contest is that people sent in their OWN stuff. They know how bad it is, the major mistakes they made that they can now laugh at and probably learned a lot from. I don't think it's done in a mean spirit. We laugh because I bet a whole lot of us have been there, done that. We laugh in sympathy and remembrance of the horrible things we have done too.

So true Pam, I could have entered one in that contest1 I keep my failures in a closed plastic tub, and every once in a while I get them out and laugh at myself!

I do believe it was done in good fun, at least that is the way I took it!

I think this contest opens up a whole new category of inadequacies. Just imagine getting rejected for "not being bad enough." At that point, do you laugh or do you cry? :D

I read about a quilt horror where a woman used the polyester serger thread to sew a quilt top. When she ironed the top, all the thread melted and she had to start over.

janedennis 05-25-2009 11:12 AM

Maybe some of you did, but some people who have been criticized may not.

Jeepers!!!! I could do better than that if I had my eyes closed the whole time I was working! In fact that is how these look their best, with my eyes closed.

Joan 05-25-2009 12:19 PM

Everybody starts somewhere and I personally give each and every one of these quilters an "E" for effort. If nothing else, it adds credence to the concept that quilting does require many skills to have a successful looking finished project. All of them tried but missed the mark but they did try. Look hard and I bet you could say something positive about each of them. ("oh, good colors" or "oh, good design")

(and it makes me terrified to EVER enter any of my quilts in a show....)

from a retired special ed. teacher who always tried (and still tries) to see the good in everyone and everything.....

kwhite 05-25-2009 03:00 PM

Yeah if they didn't have a sense of humor about it they would never have entered the contest knowing full well what it was about. I do not like insult humor cause it is mean in my opinion but the people being made fun of did not sign up for that. These people did and I applaud their courage.

We have all had those quilts that just didn't pan out. They knew exactly what was wrong with their quilts, that's why they entered, trying to win "The Worst Quilt Contest" We aren't laughing at them, but joining in laughing with them! I applaud them for being able to laugh at themselves!

I'm an untrained eye when it comes to quilting since I just started and I hope my first one will turn out better or I might just send it there, too. :P

As for shows, like any other art and craft, one has to do research to be sure they are submitting their piece(s) to a credible gallery. However, one cannot shoot for the star right off and lesser gallery or high risk galleries are sometimes a place to start perhaps even including a worst quilt contest. :)

redrummy 05-27-2009 01:32 PM

I am a firm believer in the statement, "If you can't laugh at yourself, you can't laugh at others". I can laugh at others cuz I do laugh at myself alot. I know I make mistakes, and we all here share our stories for fun and learning. I was sooooo overly critical of myself I seldom could finish for reverse sewing. Till here, and all the advice I gained. No I speak of my own faults, and expect others to laugh at stories. If they put them in ugly contest, others have already told them what we are saying.

I enjoyed this 'awful' quilt show. However, on looking further into Ami's topics I found a site called AlzQuilts.org. This organization is fighting this disease with quilt auctions and is also asking for purple fabric donations for some quilts they are making for research. They are asking for purples (solid, print, dark, or light pieces) They also have small quilts that can be purchased and are also looking for small quilt donations. Most look to be about 9 by 12 inches.

QuiltinCuzn 05-27-2009 02:53 PM

Oh oh oh!!! That is the funniest stuff I have seen in a long time! LOVED the snarky comments by the judges!!! Seriously hysterical! Thank you for posting this! I'm still laughing!!!

I think a lot of the quilts are texturally interesting to keep the patients enganged. (Corduroy, wool, shiny stuff, etc.) Alzheimer's is such a scary disease.

As far as the entries to the Ugly Contest. I can imagine that the people who enter the contest have a sense of humor and are not tied to ego.

cinnienune 05-27-2009 05:46 PM

I love this site. I now feel a little less embarrassed by my first attempts at quilting.

okie3 05-27-2009 06:46 PM

:D :D :D I had forgotten how crazy that sit was. I love Ami Simms she is a nut that can make fablous quilts. I still laughed till I cried. LOL Mom thought I was loosing my mind then she gets out of her lift chair (I should have taken a picture of this) and when I looked over she was at the front door tending to her dog--but the chair was up as high as it would go. It LOL looked like a dump truck from the back. I got so tickled again I couldn't even tell her she needed to get the control buttons and let the chair back down. At the time I was viewing the quilt that had the shrinking middle.  :P Oh well got my laughs for the day.

kd124 05-28-2009 10:23 AM

ROFL!!! These are great--I really laughed at the famous quilter's entry. Not at the quilt but that he--JF--would enter one. Now that shows the spirit of those that enter! We can laugh with not at those that enter.

My ugly is all polyester ('70's pants fab I bought to make Mom pants). A couple of years ago I made The Beast, all squares, no batting, poly on both side, and heavy. My purpose is strictly as a camp quilt. Air mattresses get cold in the night air and my ugly quilt solves the "I'm freezing" problem.

I love the bread wrapper batting. This reminds me of a quilt made for a raffle by the Ladies Club (in community I grew up in). They worked hard making a double bed size quilt entirely of triangles. I can't remember the size (it was many, many years ago), but I would guess between 4-6 inches. Get ready, here comes the good part. Each triangle was stuffed with --and not loosely--not using polyfill---but nylon stockings!! Are you laughing yet? That baby was so heavy one person could hardly lift it!!!! Of course the winner, who wasn't in the ladies club, didn't know the weight of the thing until he/she received it. I can just imagine getting under that thing and not being able to move!! LOL At least it would keep you warm in those cold winter nights in the north!! BTW--can you imagine how long those ladies saved their stockings? Perhaps they got some from relatives.

:-) :-) :-) kd124 I can relate to your story. When I found out my oldest son was getting married to the sweetest girl in the world (she's our girl to this day) I was into crocheting. So I make them this queen size "granny square" afghan. They were married the end of June (boy was it hot that day)
by the time winter came around I had it done. They used it as they were living in the Baptist Student Union Apartment at the collage they were going to and that place was cold. Their only complaint --we can't turn over in bed, but we stay warm! :-) :-) June the 29th they will be married 18 years and they still have the afghan upstairs in the guest bedroom as a bedspread. The funny part is I made that silly thing right under their noses, and it never entered their minds I was making something for them. The collage is only 10 miles from us, so they spent a lot of time at our house during the collage years.

How wonderful that they still have it on a bed. What a great story and memory for them. I don't think I could have made anything like that around either of mine. They probably would have been asking who it was for.

EagarBeez 06-02-2009 07:19 AM

I am not a very expierienced quilter, I have made one block quilt for my grandson's crib. I have made a few puff quilts which I have gotten better at. I have yet to try quilting, and I want to do a small lap quilt for starters. I got a kick out of these quilts, but, then I also see creativity in them. I admit, I would never be happy with something like that and more or less would probably stick it in a bag in the back of my closet, but, it was an attempt. Still got me laughing though. I just could not stop with that christmas cow chip!!!
Have a great day all.
Keep smiling
Brenda

thanks me an my son an future daughter inlaw had a good laugh

Kara 07-20-2009 12:00 AM

Wow  Some of those are just... bad... They needed to stop and take a minute, learn a lesson... wow...

Like they called it... "Worst Quilt Contest"...

Lisanne 07-20-2009 08:18 AM

I'm so new to quilting that most of these looked just fine to me (gulp!).

One of them mentioned puckered binding. It made me race to check the table runner I did in my beginner's quilting class. I can proudly say my binding isn't puckered, no matter what-all else is wrong with it. (And there's plenty wrong, from the chubby binding mitered corners to a bow-legged sashing, to widow's peaks on my quilt-stitch corners.)

reneebobby 07-20-2009 08:55 AM

 I look like i'm a pro at this.

Iluv2quilt 07-20-2009 08:59 AM

I wonder how much real effort and seriousness was put into those quilts, I hope I'm laughing with them, not at them.

rismstress 07-20-2009 02:35 PM

I especially loved the gold one-- made of drapery fabric- so heavy it could hardly be lifted-- and then she made her prom dress out of that fabric!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would love, love, love to see that prom dress. Bet there wasn't much dancing that night.

That's the first thing on my mind when I saw that..."what the heck did that prom dress look like???" It must have been hideous. Perhaps there is an Ugliest Prom Dress contest that she got an award for too.

Thanks for sharing this site. I laughed until I hurt, and felt ever so much better about my own quilting attempts. Some of these were so bad I wondered if they were done on purpose for the contest!

Eddie 07-20-2009 04:40 PM

Goodness, I laughed till I cried. :D My favorite was the Chronologically Challenged quilter who only got August in the right spot on her calendar quilt.

kwhite 07-20-2009 05:35 PM

I am glad to see this resurrected.

earthwalker 07-20-2009 11:45 PM

Thanks for sharing....brightened up my day and put a huge smile on my face. I loved them all....so quirky and HUMAN. I have bookmarked it so I can get through my "I can't get it quite right" times!

zennia 07-21-2009 05:20 AM

Good way tostart the day-a fun laugh. Guess i shoul'nd give up on mine.
Some of them have have nice idea-just gone bad.

Boston1954 07-21-2009 07:40 AM

Glad to see this one brought back up front. I just put it in my favorites. Any time I think I am not doing very well, I should look at this and realize that I am a better quilter than I thought.
