Would anyone be interested in an Affairs of the Heart QAL?

I'm going to start Affairs of the Heart quilt in January. There are 36 blocks, so I'll need to get three done per month to finish in a year. Would anyone else who has this book be interested in joining me for a QAL? I'd love to see other people's quilts grow!

susie-susie-susie 10-15-2014 09:12 AM

That quilt is on my bucket list, but I don't think I will be ready by January. I would love to follow along and see everyone's progress. I have the book, the backing, and the patterns cut out of template mylar. I have several quilts to finish before I take on a whole new quilt.

I am in the middle of an applique quilt and won't be ready by Jan. the one I am doing now won't end until April. Otherwise I would love to join.

woody 10-15-2014 12:10 PM

I have all 36 blocks done and need serious boot up the behind to put this together and finish the borders. I'm hoping you will all inspire me :p

I have the book, and really want to make this quilt. I think a QAL is a great idea, but unfortunately, I will not be ready by January. I sure would love to follow along though.

I looked at this one

It scared the beejeebers out of me

Got the book and need to get the fabric....though it does lend to using up scraps. Will be in this one!

imsewnso 10-15-2014 05:40 PM

Have the book and have wanted to get on this, but won't be ready by Jan. Have way too much on my plate. I will be interested to see your progress.

I think it looks more complicated than it is. The book has very clear instructions on how to cut pieces and applique. I was intimidated at first but I've had time to read the book and I think I can handle it!

Joy Higdon 10-16-2014 03:26 AM

I have just finished block 30. I am doing needle turned applique and have never seen soooo many points. Slowly but surely.

kaelynangelfoot 10-16-2014 08:27 AM

Any pictures Joy? I'd love to see it

bearisgray 10-16-2014 08:32 AM

What is a QAL?

Rhonda Lee 10-16-2014 10:40 AM

Oh this does sound intriguing. Where did you get the book or pattern? Quilt alongs do help! This looks like it could be a tad complicated....am I right in this assumption?

If you type in AOTH and search you will see some of mine and lots of others. You will love doing this quilt. Good luck.

maryb119 10-16-2014 12:26 PM

I started one several years ago and have some of the blocks done. This could be just what I need to finish it. Good idea.

Rhonda, I bought mine on amazon. Here is a link: http://www.amazon.com/Applique-Maste...s+of+the+heart

I also blog a bit and was considering running it as a linky party on my blog. I did some poking around on QB and there was an Affairs of the Heart QAL back in 2011-2012.

Hi Lynnnie, check out the site mentioned on the first page. I think it says they are 7" blocks.

Rhonda Lee 10-16-2014 09:22 PM

Kaelynanglefoot, thanks for the info. I think I might just do this! After Christmas though, lots a stuff to do before that gets here.

Cindy60545 10-17-2014 02:35 AM

This could be just the nudge I need to get it done. Count me in after the holidays.

ckcowl 10-17-2014 03:47 AM

I had not paid any attention to this topic when it showed up a few days ago, thinking... I need to get through the holidays before I even think about a new project... Finally clicked on it ( the intrigue was pulling on me) and see .... January.... That I can get my heart around! So, I ordered the book, and am now motivated to wrap up all the other *stuff* ... I have looked at and considered this project for years, a quilt along is a great way to get it done. So, I'm in, and looking forward to the adventure!

pjnesler 10-17-2014 05:49 AM

I checked out the link provided - what a beautiful quilt! I'll be watching this thread to see how it progresses, I don't have the book, and can't imagine me doing a whole quilt, but would love to do a wall hanging!

Rhonda Lee 10-17-2014 08:20 AM

OK folks, I don't what to lose this thread cause I think this will really help me with my embroidery skills. What fun to being doing something like this! Thanks for getting this one started.

kaelynangelfoot 10-17-2014 08:22 AM

Since there seems to be a good amount of interest in this, I will get a hold of an admin and clear it with them. I also really like the idea of running a linky party through my blog so I'll have to see how QB feels about that - I know there are rules about advertising personal blogs.

PolkaBabe 10-17-2014 08:50 AM

Bought the book a few years ago. Would love to do this quilt, just may have to join in.

kindleaddict63 10-17-2014 04:38 PM

Might pick up anyone who started it and didn't finish it?

busygranny 10-17-2014 06:54 PM

I am working on this quilt right now and not hard. Have all my blocks made and machine appliqued. Am now doing the embroidery and I have 10 blocks made. So far it has been fun and look forward to finishing it. Don't be afraid of this pattern. It's fun.

Are you planning on applique by hand, machine, or is it machine embroidery? I don't have the book or know anyone who has done this, but I am tempted.

Oksewnsew 10-17-2014 09:10 PM

I think this would be a great project for next year - I LOVE applique, don't do needle turned, but enjoy machine applique. Will start looking thru my fabrics & scraps and getting them together..

DOTTYMO 10-17-2014 10:00 PM

Sorry I have left mine half finished while I go to monthly applique and embroidery class. We have 4 blocks to do each month. Paid for classes and have a 5 hours travelling there and back so committed to that at present. If you keep logging in and letting us know how you are getting on could, if all goes well, join in march next year.

Knitette 10-17-2014 11:26 PM

I love appliqué, so am tempted. Does anyone know how much embroidery there is? is it on every block? I hate hand sewing...............

mojo11 10-18-2014 09:12 AM

For all of you brave ladies who have made this quilt or are making or will be making..........please post pictures of quilts and progress. Thanks.

kaelynangelfoot 10-18-2014 06:46 PM

Okay, to answer a couple questions:

The quilt can be done with either hand or machine applique. I think I will be doing hand applique. I'm machine appliqueing Elsa's Coronation Dress for my cousin's Halloween costume and I'm personally finding the curves a bit tedious. I do have a question for those who love machine applique - do you use a satin stitch or a blanket stitch?

There is a fair amount of embroidery, but I think it is mostly optional. You could get a close approximation of the embroidery with some FMQ.

I am personally considering needle turn applique, hand QAYG, and then machine piecing the finished blocks. It is Hockey Season, so I'll have plenty of time to sit in front of the TV and stitch. However, the quilt can be put together in whatever method suits you best.

Oksewnsew 10-18-2014 09:00 PM

To answer the machine applique question - I rarely use the satin stitch - I love the blanket/hem stitch, you can vary the size to use on small pcs. There is also a stitch on my machine that does a funky straight stitch that is neat.. It kinda goes forward, then back a couple stitches, then forward, etc. It gives a sort of a 'raised' stitch, I sometimes use it with the blanket stitch. I'm NOT a hand stitcher, never have been..lol but I have machine appliqued for years, it's just enjoyable to me. Hope that helps..:)

Oh man this board never ceases's to amaze me! I love this quilt so much and I would love to improve my hand applique. I take it we buy a book? Is there a kit available? I am in the process of finishing a scrappy civil war quilt. I loved making the fabric choices for this beast, but I need a break. Any suggestions?

There is a book that you would need to purchase. It is Affairs of the Heart Applique Masterpiece by Aie Rossmann. I also did stumble across a BOM kit being sold by an online retailer that start releasing the blocks next February. If you do a google search for Affairs of the Heart Block of the Month, you should be able to find it rather easily. The BOM I looked at does state that you will receive the book with your first month's blocks.

Thanks for the advice, I will try to test out the blanket stitch on some scraps and see if that goes smoother. I'm using the satin stitch for the applique on the dress.
