I like this one the best, but think it would be more eye catching to show the entire image with a small photo in a corner. Looks like an interesting book.

Most of the text of "how to" is done, just need a little more detail here and there, and then I need create some generic patterns (which I may ask for volunteers to make up for me, to add pics to the book).

What do you think of this? And how does the title catch you?

Due to a family emergency, I am behind on reading the board so I know this response is late but number 3 is great for the cover because it gives the clearest picture of taking a photograph and turning it into a quilt. I have been wanting to try one of these quilts. I think they are amazing. I think you will finda a market for your book.

I like number 3 but then i'd like to see a completely different finished quilt in the lower right or left corner or a series of finished quilts along the bottom?

Today I caught this thread about cover ideas for your proposed book. Having just done the technique my preference is definitely #2, with #5 for the back cover. I agree that the text should be wrapped and not overlay the images. As for using the term Portraits, my feeling is it makes a great first impression. The fact that subjects other than people can be done this way could be conveyed in a tag line on either, or both, the front and back. Include a small graphic of a landscape or still life, with an offset of the fabric image on the back cover to further illustrate the point.

Thanks again for devising this unique process.

Thanks for the suggestions. And Yeah - I am so glad someone has tried it and likes it. Looking forward to seeing your quilt. :-P

Let me get this right. You're going to take a newly printed book and sell it right out of the gate at 40% off to any present or future QB member? Your classified here will be searchable on the web so anyone can join QB and get the reduced rate, no waiting time involved for buyers. You may want to reconsider this plan.

Classifieds is not intended to be a store, it's meant to be a thrift shop...as Patrice is so fond of reminding us. ;)

Wow, thanks for pointing this out to me. I had not done my research on rules for classifieds yet.

So, NO, it will not be posted in the classifieds, you are right, I do not want to sell it at 40% off immediately.

So, I will post a note (need research correct spot to post), that says it is ready. I have just redone my blog page to allow for this new info. Right now it basically says nothing! But, I have set up pages to put the info when it is ready. So, become an email follower, and you will know when info is posted.

Maybe Links and Resources would be better ?

But, grammatjr, there is nothing stopping someone else from starting a thread with a link to your blog pointing out this fabulous new book is now available.

ps if you want those contract outlines, just PM me your address so I can mail them (scanner is still down).

Ok, I took Friday off, and wow - you all were so chatty. I have caught up to all the comments. And I will now work on the PM - there are 2 dozen! Wow.

Over the weekend, I thought the name of the technique, and title of the book should be "Cut Work Portraits and other art quilts" - what do you think?

wildyard 08-29-2011 12:39 PM

I think cut work is a perfect name for this technique!

I had a chance to actually see a layout this weekend. Up till now I had been working mainly on text and patterns, but not really tried to lay it out.

Just to create the templates, I quick typed an Intro. There are bunches of typos, and I didn't have everyone's name at home with me so, it is not really accurate, but gave me an idea of the "look".

What do you think?

I have created an even simpler way to create the patterns, so decided to try it out with my 6 year old granddaughter. That was a hoot!

She did really well - until she decided to do her own thing, and then got bored and didn't finish! :-P

Anyway, she didn't understand the concept of angle perception, so free hand drew another ear to match the first one (not quite in the same place, but really pretty good) - her ear really is sort of hidden behind her cheek in the photo. Also, she didn't like her hair, so started drawing her own style, then got bored and quit, so she is bald on one side.

She hurried too much, and so the lines aren't exactly where they should be, so shapes are a little off too.

But, all that aside, I think she did pretty good.

lol she certainly did better than I am doing. Why don't my outlines look like my grandchildren to me? I see the likenesses in all the other photos and outlines, just not in my own. What am I doing wrong?

Your pattern is really good. I think the new technique will help you even more. I will be sending the instructions for the new technique to those who have already volunteered to help me out (and you are one of those). I need to write up that chapter first! It was sort of a "duh" moment when I came up with this way to do it. Maybe you will be a little happier with the pattern done the new way.

BTW - beautiful little girl!

one-and-only 09-06-2011 03:50 PM

I think you are doing a great job, really anxious to see your book come out. I am sure it will be a big success.

Your granddaughter is a delicate, fair child. The heavy lines aren't able to convey her youth and lightness. Since children's noses aren't as heavily molded as adults, I think defining only the tip of her nose and nostrils would make it less mature looking. Ditto for the lines beside her mouth--accent the dimples and not the shadows.
A much thinner line would make reproducing the eyes more accurate and the upper eyelid is needed. Her real brows are almost invisible. I'm not sure how one would show them in this technique. Try a few very thin lines for the inner brows and just some wisps for the rest.

She is so beautiful, I can see how you would want to do her portrait.

wildyard 09-06-2011 05:16 PM

Thank you so much for your help Green Heron. I may revert to doing the flowers, LOL.
I have a picture of a green heron on my livingroom wall that my son photographed then had printed on canvas to look like a painting for me because I loved his photo so much!
