I was feeling so good, happily sewing together the last row of blocks for my quilt as you go string quilt. I finished the last seam and picked up the top to add the last border on.

What? This doesn't match, strange I had the quilt turned to the side to make sure I was sewing them together right. I tried the other side, still no match. Then I realized I had the top edge of the quilt towards me when I started matching up the squares!!!!AAARRRRRGGGGG

Time to take a break before I put Jack the ripper to work.I have to take out every seam and start over. You can be sure I will make sure I am using the right row for my guidelines this time!!! :|

Bummer!

cindyg 08-24-2010 10:25 AM

Have you tried the eyebrow shavers. They come 3 to a package and are only about $1. It makes ripping out seams a quick job. My DH saw me using it one time and he was impressed - LOL.

Practice makes perfect?

tolepainter54 08-24-2010 10:36 AM

The upside is I would count it as 2 done!lol

GGquilts 08-24-2010 10:36 AM

it is a bummer, whenever I see your name I think I am going to get a laugh, not this time this is not funny, been there done that not funny at all.

I wonder does anybody use a fine, very pointed pair of scissors to rip seams? I just cut the line of stitching every 1/4 inch or so and it just pulls apart. I find I don't accidently cut the fabric using the scissors. Sorry Ditter about your having to undo. All of us have been there. I'm a better ripper than a piecer or a quilter. More practice.

Linda B 08-24-2010 11:05 AM

I'm either going to show my age or the fact that I'm not into much makeup, but what are eyebrow shavers?

I use that same technique except I use a size 11 exacto knife. The point slips under the stitches really easy and the blade is thin.

raptureready 08-24-2010 11:44 AM

I sometimes use my tiny Ginghers or other scissors to rip out---I use whatever is handy at the time. I'm not crazy about it. BUT I can't wait to see your new quilt.

Rachel 08-24-2010 11:47 AM

My Gma taught me to rip seams with a razor blade, works great, you just have to pay attention.

This is a great tip, I am also a frequent unsewer!!

I've used razor blades too!

sidmona 08-24-2010 12:19 PM

Sorry for your trouble with your quilt - {{{{{hugs}}}}}

oksewglad 08-24-2010 12:21 PM

As ye sew so shall ye rip!! Been there done that, too.

ann clare 08-24-2010 12:22 PM

I am an expert with the stitch ripper. Lots of practise.

plainpat 08-24-2010 12:41 PM

Isn't that enough to make you crazy? I will admit, I've not only sewn blocks wrong, ripped it, then sewed it wrong a 2nd time! That's time to quit for a while.

Eyebrow shavers?

quilter711 08-24-2010 12:50 PM

Ditter,
Don't feel so bad. I have only made two quilts and each one has been torn out after sewing the top together. I am hoping the third one goes smoothly!

Hang in there!
Nancy

Oh no Ditter! Thanks for sharing though - seems like there are many ways to rip out seams. Good tips resulted. But I still don't know what an eyebrow shaver is. Or how it would be used.

That is too funny!!! I got it all taken apart and resewn. Now to add the joining strip and add it to the quilt. I had hoped to finish it today but now it will be tomorrow at the earliest!! :-D

quilter711 08-24-2010 03:29 PM

Eyebrow shaver looks like a dangerous tool to use on your eyebrows or a quilt!

Walgreens has them. I'm not sure how to work them properly, but I have them.

ganny 08-24-2010 05:34 PM

I use a pair of little "snippers" (not sure what they are called - the kind with no finger holes - cost less than $2). The points are very precise and they are excellent for going in the seam and only clipping the thread. I love them.

littlehud 08-24-2010 06:29 PM

Oh my, how frustrating is that.

Oh, thank goodness someone asked the question!! I was too chicken to ask!

GGquilts 08-24-2010 06:59 PM

I sometimes use a small pair of embroidery scissors they have a small hook that catches the thread easy.

renda 08-25-2010 02:07 AM

Has anyone used something called a "Ripper-Clipper"? I love them so much I keep a pair by each machine. They can be purchased at Shoppers Rule and Nancy's Notions.
They have a very sharp point to pick up those tiny stitches and are also a wonderful clipper.

deirdre ann 08-25-2010 04:19 AM

I think I'd cry!!!

colorfulgrammy 08-25-2010 05:07 AM

I really feel for you. I'm working on a large block quilt for my DGS for his big boy bed. After I had nine rows of 8.5" blocks sewed together, I realized that half way thru it, I had flipped the quilt. The tension in my head and in my hand ripping those seams out was undescribable.

Keep a loose upper lip!!!

Connie Merritt 08-25-2010 05:10 AM

I am like the quilters using the razor; I use the rotary cutter (saw this on TV with Alex) and tried it. Must be careful and pay attention to what you are doing but it really works fast.

Rettie V. Grama 08-25-2010 05:35 AM

Hi Jack the Ripper

Don't quite understand when you say the blocks don't match, but did you ever hear the old adage: "There is always one mistake in every quilt. Why not camaflage someway and not rip. I have done the same thing. You can cover in up, believe me. Add a nice little border at borth ends or on that end make it with a border and some appliques. You can fix it, but don't rip it. It is your creation, perfect or not.

Charleen DiSante 08-25-2010 05:50 AM

I feel for you!! Unfortunately, along with many others, I can say I've been there too. I was wondering if you could post a picture of what you have done/undone so far, I'd like to do a QAYG quilt so it could help to see it part way done.

A mans mustache trimmer works great. At a retreat last year I kept hearing this "buzzzz" sound from across the room and finally had to go see what was happening. The lady was using the mustache trimmer to unsew. Stopped at Walgreen on the way home and bought one. Came home and said to my hubby, "see what I bought for you". "HUH!! I don't have a mustache". "Oh, guess I will have to use it to rip seams". Hee hee. It does work like a charm though.
