I to have to agree, the quilt is absolutely beautiful. I would try my best to try and preserve the quilt. If your mil needs something more to stay warm I would suggest maybe a simple 4 patch or 9 patch to the sweat shirt as you previously said. It would be newer and would hold up much better than a 70 year old quilt. Good luck with your decision. :):):)

Whatever gets the quilt loved and used is the most important thing. In my opinion doesn't matter how old or valuable it is if it is hidden away and not used. I think it was meant to be loved.

OMG... I have a quilt my grandmother made for my mother. It is in a lot worse shape that this one....I found it after my mom passed away. It seems she could not get rid of it sooooooo I won't get rid of it or try to cut it up...not that I could make anything out of it. It is in such bad shape. I will just hold on to it for fond memories. Your quilt is lovely.

I agree - make a smaller quilt with the intact parts (you could reinforce some seams in the process to make sure the "quilt redux" is stabler) and use the other parts for other projects. I am a big proponent of "if it started out as a quilt, do what you can to KEEP it a quilt."

I'd repair the raggedy blocks as best I could and use these to make a table runner, one-block-wall hanging(s), or other items that won't get much wear. If you use these items for a garment, it'll get washed and used in directions that neither the fabric nor the seams might not be able to withstand at this point in its age.

How about a baby quilt and a matching teddy bear made from it.

How about making it into pillows? They could be given to relatives....for birthdays or christmas?

personally I would use the best pieces and frame with the quilts history and give as gifts to family members

I would repair it and display it somehow. Maybeeven in a quilt museum.

Enjoy it anyway you choose, it was made to be enjoyed.
