Would you even bother?
2 Attachment(s)
Obviously I fussy cut flowers out of this fabric and now I'm left with this...
and silly me, not wanting to waste fabric, I'm thinking I can cut it further and use it in a scrap quilt but hmmn, what a pain in the you know what. I don't think there is an easy way. What would you do? How would you attempt to cut it? Or seriously, would you even bother? And I'll try to get a pic of one of the quilts that came from this mess if it will work... |
oh my gosh, what a sweet little quilt!
I would probably cut some strings from that piece of swiss cheese ;-) |
I would take the larger square template that you used & just cut as many of those size squares as you can. Might only be a few, but those little squares sure add up.
Pretty quilt! |
That is a very pretty quilt. There seems to be a lot of scrap fabric left .... :) if you wish you can cut that fabric up into lumber yard cuts, ....... 2 X 2, 2 X 4, 4 X 4, etc. or just cut it into useable hunks.
Might be time to throw that one out. would take a lot of time to cut it into something usable.
I save everything so I would cut out all that I could. I do this in the evenings when listening to tv. love the quilt
Pretty flower quilt! I would use the square and cut as many as you can, making sure they were on the straight of grain.
It looks like that piece of fabric did its job and gave you everything it had to give.
I think it might be difficult to salvage what's left, even for a scrap quilt, especially if you needed patches that are cut on grain. You have a lovely quilt; don't give the leftover hunk another thought. |
Seems like you could get some strips for a string quilt from the leftover piece--but it is a little hard to tell the dimensions of the leftover piece.
I would cut out the salvageable sections which I see are many. I toss the smaller unusable scrapes into a bag and donate them to a lady who makes bedding for the local shelter. Funny, my cleaning lady had them tied up ready to toss in the trash. I stopped her just in time.
I see several places to fussy cut more squares. The rest I'd cut 1.5"x1.5", 1.5"x2.5", upwards for log cabin strips. The fabric is too pretty not to use as much as possible. :)
The quilt is beautiful! |
I have a piece that looks just like this one. However, I have some fussy cut motifs still that I can harvest and then I will whack the rest into smaller squares. I am like you, just don't want to waste any.
I would cut it into 1.5" strings and throw it into my bag of 1.5" strips to be cut up later when I know what I'm going to do. But there is going to be a lot of waste.
I agree with others, cut some strings or blocks with what is left and put them away in your scraps. Then when you see them again to use in a project you will think of your beautiful quilt.
If you do any paper piecing, there is plenty of good left in that piece. Just cut up into largish hunks and toss it in the scraps! If you're not a paper piecer, I agree with the others - cut as many squares, strips or rectangles as you can without making yourself nuts, then discard the rest (or donate it to someone who uses tiny scraps for stuffing or whatever).
There's plenty left to salvage. Great looking quilt!

Very pretty quilt. I'd just cut the scraps in strips with a rotary cutter. After that, whatever happens happens.

What difference does it make if it is in the bottom of my scrap bin or on top of my trash bin? Either way I will never use it.
Beautiful! I'd say fussy cutting definitely worked! I would cut squares of the remaining fabric.
I would cut tumblers and add to my pile for a scrappy tumbler quilt. It wouldn't be as hard or any harder at least as the fussy cutting you already did. :-)
There was a time when I would try to get more from it. Now I give it to a lady in church who does not have much money to buy fabric.
I see a couple of hexies in that piece, however I like the idea of donating it to someone who would appreciate the fabric and the kind gesture.
I love your quilt. It's beautiful.
Once upon a time I had a piece of fabric like the one you fussy cut from and after many, many months of trying to decide what do with such a mess, I finally trashed it. But, I will admit it was not easy to throw even that piece of fabric away. LOL |
My Go Baby would make wonderful circles for yo yos or hexis in a short while. Maybe a friend has one you can use....
Lovely little quilt.
I always cut my leftover fabric into 2.5" squares. I've made some beautiful scrap quilts. Sometimes I ilike them better than the carefully-planned quilts.
Would be good for nickel quilts or miniature quilts. Too beautiful to throw away. If you don't want to cut up use in a doggy beg for stuffing. You did a beautiful job on your quilt
Yup, I would bother. I collect scraps. How I do it depends on the time and peace I have. When I get a commercial-sized pickle jar full of all sorts of cut scraps and have the urge to sew and do not have a project or am healing from a project, etc. I dig out the jar and sew "manufactured material" or test blocks or try out a new technique.
Scraps rule. P |
First cut the largest squares you can get, then smaller squares, then largest rectangles, then smaller rectangles, then strips and strings. Even the scraps of that fabric are beautiful!
You still have a few usable scraps left in there. Me being somewhat frugal... I had some fabric with big flowers like the swiss cheese - mine was kind of drape material - not a whole lot of it but I had several different prints - I made a patch work tote bag for my daughter - her bo-ho bag. When she wore it out she wanted another one just like it - she had a lot of compliments on it. Then for her birthday I made another one. I used calico and it didn't go over as big with her as the ones I did with the big prints. She said bo-ho is the bigger flowers... what ever...
What a lovely quilt. Since I save everything I would cut the remaining piece into whatever size I could salvage and then save what was too small for pet beds.

Grandmothers flower garden, look at the paperpieces website.

It sounds like you could send it to someone who would love to have it if you don't want to fool with it.
I would cut them into 2 1/2" strips, 2" x 4" rectangles or 2" x 6" rectangles. It won't take long to do that with your rotary cutter.
Very nice quilt! We are practically neighbors because I live in Benton City, WA
Your quilt is very pretty. I agree with Sync.
