I make quilts to be used. If they wear out from use, so be it. If it wears out from "miss-use", that another issue. If it's used for a pet blanket, left in the sun, or laundered without care, it makes me sad. But a gift given, is a gift given. Quilts I make for my personal use, are used. Some are on display, some are on the beds, some are left to snuggle under on the couch. I love looking around my home and seeing my craft in use or on display.

USE IT!!!! Now I do have a few well worn ones that were my grandmothers which are rarely used but used just the same.... very gently

I am sleeping under 4 of them. There are others for different seasons in the closet, and a couple waiting for fair time. I am making one for "Sam" who plows my snow.

I've given most of my quilts away. The ones I've kept are all in use. My daughter use most of the ones I've given to her. The ones not in use are displayed on the stair bannister. Her daughter took one to college with her. My DIL and DGSs the ones I've given them, too.

I definitely want most of my quilts used, loved, washed, and in tatters. But I am getting ready to make 2 Dear Jane quilts for my great nephew and great niece and I will want those to be displayed.
So, it depends on the quilt and the vision for it! |
I don't enter quilt competitions so my ribbons and prizes are seeing my grandchildren and children use my quilts and love them right to pieces sometimes. I recently repaired a 40-year old quilt for my daughter and an 18-year-old quilt for my grandson. Yes, I have some I don't particularly want down on the floor but mostly I want my quilts loved and used.

When my dear MIL passed, my husband and his sister took turns picking the quilts that she had. Some of the older, worn quilts were the 1st to be picked. It was the memories that made some more special than others. It was a fair way to keep the quilts alive and I cherish the ones my DH picked. I've told my kids they have to do the same thing when I'm gone even though my DH says he's going to sell them all at a yard sale for $1 each. He's kidding.... he loves my quilts and I always get a big hug and kiss when he teases me about it. And the kids argue over the quilts every time they're here together for a visit. |
I make mine to be used and abused (i.e. loved)! I would much rather replace one than find it later in perfect condition!

I have a quilt of my great-grandmother's that has definitely seen it's better days, holes everywhere and the batting is falling apart. I am cutting the parts out that are still salvageable and incorporating them into my own quilts.

Wall hangings etc. I would not be washing too often, and I have a UFO that has tons of applique. It will go on the bed, but will be removed at night. My husband kicks all comforters, quilts etc. on the floor and they are a hazard for me if I get up. |
