A few months ago I purchased the Bernina stitch-in-the-ditch foot. I didn't even know about it but I came across someone suggesting it for machine binding. It took me awhile to locate one as every Bernina dealer was sold out and the item was on backorder. I received mine after about a 5 or 6 week wait.

I finally got to use it today. It is amazing. I read some mixed reviews on the Yahoo Bernina group but I have no reservations whatsoever. The blade on the foot opens up the seam and just lays the stitches right in, well, the ditch.

For this quilt I spray basted it (on my bed for the first time, no problems) started my stabilizing stitches around the inside of the border. When I was done I could barely see the stitching. I tried to get a picture of it. The stitching on the horizontal border is as close to perfect as I have ever come. It took me one side to get the hang of it but once I did it was super easy and much faster because I didn't have to keep stopping and starting and making sure I was holding the seam open, the foot does it for you.

As an aside - this is also my first time using Hobbs wool batting. I like it. Already with the stitching around the perimeter of the quilt and then the grid inside it has a nice fullness, just shy of puffiness. I can't wait until this one is done and washed.

What is the number on the foot? I have used the #10 edge foot for this in the past. Wondering if it is something different.
Thanks,

Which one did you get? There is a new sole plate for the walking foot that is a stitch in the ditch foot. Is that the one you got, or did you get the regular one? I have both and you are right, they make it really easy!

BTW, love the little bit of your quilt that the pic shows...how about a shot of the whole quilt???

I picked one up a couple of weeks ago and have not used it yet. It is a sole plate for the walking foot. I have the box right here......It is not a foot so there is no number on it... the part number written in small print is .32913.70.00 Price on mine was $33.43 but it got it 20% off because my store is closing. They just say it is an "Interchangeable sole with guiding plate for the walking foot 50"

The number 10 (also C & D) foot is called the edgestitching foot and works for stitch in the ditch also. It all depends how thick the quilt sandwich is whether you need to use the walking foot or not. I have the 830 and many times use the #10D foot with my dual feet and it works great!

They have a comparable for Viking .... LOVE IT! I will never hand sew a binding again. Sorry all you hand binding sewers, but machine stiching at 12 stitches per inch with perfect tension beats hand sewing for long lasting durability on the binding .
I actually have two one with a single hole and another I can needle over to either side ..... many.. many uses.

Sorry to hear about your store closing. The store where I bought my Bernina closed about a year or so after I bought my machine. It is always terrible to lose another store.

I think they also call it Foot sole w/center guide. A couple of the stores I went to tried to sell me the WHOLE walking foot rather than just the sole. Yikes!
