A few months ago I purchased the Bernina stitch-in-the-ditch foot. I didn't even know about it but I came across someone suggesting it for machine binding. It took me awhile to locate one as every Bernina dealer was sold out and the item was on backorder. I received mine after about a 5 or 6 week wait.
I finally got to use it today. It is amazing. I read some mixed reviews on the Yahoo Bernina group but I have no reservations whatsoever. The blade on the foot opens up the seam and just lays the stitches right in, well, the ditch. For this quilt I spray basted it (on my bed for the first time, no problems) started my stabilizing stitches around the inside of the border. When I was done I could barely see the stitching. I tried to get a picture of it. The stitching on the horizontal border is as close to perfect as I have ever come. It took me one side to get the hang of it but once I did it was super easy and much faster because I didn't have to keep stopping and starting and making sure I was holding the seam open, the foot does it for you. As an aside - this is also my first time using Hobbs wool batting. I like it. Already with the stitching around the perimeter of the quilt and then the grid inside it has a nice fullness, just shy of puffiness. I can't wait until this one is done and washed. |
What is the number on the foot? I have used the #10 edge foot for this in the past. Wondering if it is something different.
Thanks, |
Which one did you get? There is a new sole plate for the walking foot that is a stitch in the ditch foot. Is that the one you got, or did you get the regular one? I have both and you are right, they make it really easy!
BTW, love the little bit of your quilt that the pic shows...how about a shot of the whole quilt??? |
Great information. Definitely need the number of the foot, please.
Well, this board is great! Didn't know there was suck
H an animal for the Bernina. Will look for it. Many thanks. |
My typos keep getting better. Oh,well there's another day.
I picked one up a couple of weeks ago and have not used it yet. It is a sole plate for the walking foot. I have the box right here......It is not a foot so there is no number on it... the part number written in small print is .32913.70.00 Price on mine was $33.43 but it got it 20% off because my store is closing. They just say it is an "Interchangeable sole with guiding plate for the walking foot 50"
The number 10 (also C & D) foot is called the edgestitching foot and works for stitch in the ditch also. It all depends how thick the quilt sandwich is whether you need to use the walking foot or not. I have the 830 and many times use the #10D foot with my dual feet and it works great!
They have a comparable for Viking .... LOVE IT! I will never hand sew a binding again. Sorry all you hand binding sewers, but machine stiching at 12 stitches per inch with perfect tension beats hand sewing for long lasting durability on the binding .
I actually have two one with a single hole and another I can needle over to either side ..... many.. many uses. |

I think they also call it Foot sole w/center guide. A couple of the stores I went to tried to sell me the WHOLE walking foot rather than just the sole. Yikes! |

Oh thanks, I have a BErnina and didnt know about this foot...
Thank you for sharing this information and have fun!!

I was wondering how the SID foot helps with binding. Is it for sewing the binding down on front after you've already stitched it down on back? I use the walking foot for binding now, sewing it to the front, and then I hand stitch the back.
I have tried that foot... wasnt a fan. Wonder if I should give it a go again?

I'm actually looking forward to doing the binding on this quilt. I hope it goes faster as well. |

That being said, on the last quilt that I did of the same pattern with the same methods as above the SID quilting did not come out as nicely. |

I also have the stitch in the ditch foot for Viking. It's called a joing foot. Have shied away from stitching in the ditch, but after using it for the first time to sew a flang on pillow shams I am Sold!! I could sew faster and got great results. Next I will try it for binding as was suggested on this list.
Will have to check on this new sole plate...wonder if it will work for the older Bernina's or only the newer ones?

I have the SID # 10 and the walking foot SID sole plate. They are great. I used the # 10 and moved the needle over just a little to try a binding. It worked great.
I recently bought a new stitch-in-the-dicth base plate for my walking foot (I have a Bernina Aurora 440) and it's wonderful! How did we ever get along without these aides before?
OHHHHH I need one of those.
great foot love it
The Pfaff bladed foot is good as well.
How about a picture of the foot?
What number? Please share. |
I saw the foot you add to the older walking foot. Cost was $39.95. I was just glad we didn't have to buy the whole foot. Between my Bernina 200E and 830 I have feet of every kind except for my 37 foot. Couldn't find it so bought another but was told if I found it to bring the other back. I have the greatest dealer. Gina's Bernina in Knoxville, TN.
I've never heard of this foot. Thanks for the information.
Thanks! Sooooo excited to hear about this foot plate for the walking foot. Have added it to my shopping list. Can't sew anything with batting without my walking foot. Love it!
Thanks for the info. I put it on my list next time I go to my Bernina dealer.
I agree, that foot is wonderful. I have a Bernina 820 and the number of the foot for that machine is #5. I also have a Janome 6500 and it has a stitch-in-the-ditch foot too. Tools, tools, wonderful tools!
I just bought a stitch in the ditch foot for my Janome. Can't wait to use it, too! SID has always been a challenge for me.
By the way, I'm standing here in the kitchen, ON THIS BOARD, with my mop in the bucket, supposed to be washing the floors. This board is such a wonderful distraction! Been washing floors for over 50 years, easy, and nothing ever distracted this Suzie Homemaker like this board does!!! |
Thank you for the info!
I love my SITD foot! It's good for lots of things.
I have the ones for the Viking, too and tho they were pricy they are well worth it.

I have a SID foot for my Pfaff 2144 but can't say that I like it. Seems easier to me to just guide it with a regular presser edge stitch presser foot
I'd love seeing a picture of the foot too. I have a SID foot for my Janome but I don't think it helps hold the seams open. Sounds pretty cool!
