I went to JoAnn's today. I found the perfect fabrics for a quilt for my niece. She wants bright pink and bright green.

Their fabric prices went up!!! I can not believe how much. I am going to LQS Monday to see the price differences.

Usually 3.99-5.99/yd is now up to 7.99/yd.

Yes, I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the prices are going up about .50 every time I go in.

lots2do 12-02-2010 04:16 PM

I was talking to a new friend who works in a shop. She says it's not the fabric itself that's making the big difference in the price increases but the higher shipping costs to get the fabrics into the shop. Of course, we live way up here in New England and are not close to any major ports.

Lori S 12-02-2010 04:35 PM

The prices at JoAnn's has gotten more ( alot more) than I think the quality warrents.

CoventryUK 12-02-2010 04:37 PM

Wish we could get fabric at that price!!!!

I read somewhere recently that the price of cotton (not fabric - just grown cotton) has gone up considerably -- thus the tremendous increase in fabric prices.

wanderingcreek 12-02-2010 04:54 PM

That goes for me as well!

QazyQltr 12-02-2010 04:57 PM

Guess we had best build up our fabic stash before we can afford to quilt? :-)

QazyQltr 12-02-2010 04:58 PM

Darn keyboard ... meant to say CAN'T afford to quilt

tjradj 12-02-2010 05:03 PM

I'd give my left arm for good fabric at $8/yd. Here in SW Ontario, quilt store fabric is $15/meter and up. Batiks are even more.
"Cheap" stuff is $10- $12/Meter (just bigger than a yard)
Warm and Natural batting is $69 for a queen size package.
Needless to say, I wait for sales.
With the Canadian $ being so close to par with US right now, it's almost worth the tank of gas to shop over the border, and I'm 3 hours away!

QuilterGary 12-02-2010 05:08 PM

As for the cost of fabric not only has cotton gone up the price of deisel has gone up. When gas goes up people get mad but you can use (in some cases) public transportation or you can choose not to travel as much. When the price of deisel goes up and no one says much. But everyone buys deisel everything that moves uses trucks or tractors you have no choice but to buy deisel.

rebeljane 12-02-2010 05:12 PM

Me too. In Australia quilt shops sell fabric for up to $35.00 per metre

mommafank 12-02-2010 06:00 PM

Was going to complain about prices also but then seeing what they are paying in other countries felt it not a great idea. So I guess we all should concentrate on how to quilt with less money. Lets all exchange ideas for obtaining our fabrics at a more affordable price. I used to shop at Walmart until they deleted all the fabric from their stores.

Yes!!! I heard that too. I heard the prices are going up because how how bad the cotton crops have been.

pjustice63 12-02-2010 06:05 PM

Went to LQS on Black Friday. Moda fabrics were $11.25 a yard. Guess I will really use my stash now. I refuse to pay those prices.

Amen to that!!! Glad I have an abundance of fabric..

CarrieAnne 12-02-2010 06:34 PM

It really has gone up!

purplefiend 12-02-2010 06:42 PM

I've been shopping more from my stash and buying fewer new
fabrics.

crochetetc 12-02-2010 06:51 PM

Our LQS actually advised us to buy now because prices were going up Jan 1 and even took the time to explain why in their newsletter. Right now I pay $8 a yard for Batiks and plan on hitting the hard for backings after Christmas for all my WIPS that will need them.

Farm Quilter 12-02-2010 06:59 PM

I just ordered some from http://www.eleanorburns.com/shoponline/fabricsale.asp - the prices start at $3.00.

Not out here...crops looked good !! The price from what I've been told is so much going overseas, that makes no since, we could have more mills here. But I'm not going there:)
Could be a sign someone is thinking economy is turning, and thats not a bad thing!!!
Anywhoo could be the amount of growing less than normal, helping the price.
Just glad to see the farmers have a good year !! Can afford new equipment, then hello steel workers, etc. :)
Just my take....:)

wanderingcreek 12-02-2010 07:42 PM

I have 3 patterns that have been waiting for just the right fabrics to make them and I finally found it (Northcotts Stonehenge Collection) but when I saw it recently they were selling it here for $22 metre (39" instead of 35") for the cottons. I can't afford that so now I have to keep looking for something else to use and if prices are going up even more, these may never get made unless I win the lottery!

Also the wild weather conditions all over many countries has contributed to bad conditions and affecting the quality and quantity of cotton available. I read someplace that it'll take at least 7 years before it'll be back to normal

joan_quilts 12-02-2010 08:38 PM

The last time I went to JoAnn's, the fabric I bought was made in China. I just don't get why we have to pay so much for fabric. I understand the costs of diesel fuel, bad crops, etc, but I don't like paying $3 more per yard for the same fabric I bought last year for less. I will be using my stash too!

twospoiledhuskies 12-02-2010 10:09 PM

I'm with you. I went there looking for xmas material. I to was shocked some of it was $10.00 a yard. I'll go to my LQS and get much better quality of fabric. If I don't need alot and on sale I will still go to Joanne's. ;-)

earthwalker 12-02-2010 10:52 PM

Another Aussie here...our prices are really high. I only shop when my favourite shops are having sales. Today Textile Traders had 25% off storewide, I bought 1 metre (a little over a yard) of butterfly print and 1/2 metre each of pink and yellow solids - cost $10.50 (Aus.). I love to quilt...it so helps my health and spirit, if I can't find new, it's off to charity shops for remnants or clothing I can cut up.

gramma8 12-02-2010 11:22 PM

I just got a coupon for 50% off any single cut of fabric of any kind that is not on sale, as that's what the coupon says. So, I think I'll run on down there (I'm fortunate that JoAnn's is only about 5 miles away.) and buy something that catches my eye. I usually end up buying solid color fabrics, as they are easier to match colors. (for me anyway)

rona thickpenny 12-03-2010 12:28 AM

here in the u k I have seen fabric at £14`s a metre, thats £s not dollers.

I SO agree with this. JoAnn's quality is mostly poor, especially in their "keepsake calico" fabrics. I choose their "premium" quilting fabric more and more. Their Legacy, Stonehill, Susan Winget, Debbie Mumm, etc. fabric are somewhat better quality. I can use coupons on those lines and at least feel that I got a bargain. :D :D

I wish the LQS would run more specials, but I do understand their overhead prices, etc.

I thought the ships came in to Portsmouth Harbor or somewhere in Maine. I grew up in NH, but never thought about what ports got what. Interesting...

I agree. Most of us here pay 12.99/metre and up, usually around the 17.99/metre & batiks can be as much as 27.99/metre, now grant you, this is LQS prices. Our Fabricland or Fabricville runs about 11.99/metre and most of the fabric is of very poor quality. If the prices keep going up, I'm not sure what the next step will be once our stashes are gone. Once the prices go up...they never seem to come back down!

auntmarie 12-03-2010 02:47 AM

try www.quilt-in-a-day.com

fabric fpr $4/00 yd or less.

plainpat 12-03-2010 03:27 AM

Our Joanns prices started going up at least 2 yrs ago. Many of the "cheaper" cottons are $5.98yd & better ones $9yd.Notions are the cheapest thing to buy there, especially with a good coupon. Our Walmart fabric area is a joke. Notions look dusty & old.....& it just kills the clerks (you have to call them) when you ask for fabric to be cut.I don't shop there at any price.

Sounds lika a road trip! When we lived in New Mexico years ago, I got SO tired of being told "it costs more because of shipping costs - we're west of the Mississippi." Guess things haven't changed that much!

applique 12-03-2010 05:12 AM

I love batiks and my LQS now has a 40% off on Hoffman prints! Christmas is going to be early! I also buy from Roberta when she sells batiks here on the list.

mayra 12-03-2010 05:17 AM

For me in CT JoAnne's fabric are about the same prices as our local quilt shops
