Why, with some fabric, won't the wrinkles come out no matter how much you iron it or steam iron it. It makes me crazy. Is it something with the fabric or what? I need a solution or else have to change out the fabric in my quilt.

saf 07-30-2011 07:18 AM

I've found that spray stach helps

amma 07-30-2011 07:20 AM

Spray starch or sizing :D:D:D

crafty pat 07-30-2011 07:21 AM

I try to iron fabric like that while it is still wet. It has worked for me most of the time. Then I spray starch it. Hope it works for you.

Holice 07-30-2011 07:22 AM

i have heard that vinegar works in taking wrinkles out

qbquilts 07-30-2011 07:29 AM

if a fabric is really stubborn, I'll use spray starch (if handy) or lightly dampen with water to relax the wrinkle and then lightly smooth the fabric with my hands as it dries to a damp dry before ironing again.

jeeze,,,,, I have some "premuim muslin" like that... I tried everything... starch, sizing, ironing while damp , while wet, steaming.... I got it flat enough to cut , but thats all I can say!.. I'll try the vinegar.. of course I bought a # of yards of this stuff...sigh...... and it was rough and stiff as cardboard even after several washings... I'lll never buy that again... looked nice and was soft before I washed it.... grrrrrr

eastermarie 07-30-2011 07:30 AM

Try the white vinegar.

janRN 07-30-2011 07:48 AM

Bluteddi, I did the same thing--the muslin I bought must be made of steel. No matter what I do, can't get the wrinkles out. I also bought a lot of it---hmm, maybe that's why it was on sale at LQS. I'm going to try the vinegar method; I've done everything but lay it on the road and drive over it.
Thanks for the suggestions and for posting this thread, Nolee..

Annaquilts 07-30-2011 07:49 AM

Spray starch can help but I also do have more of a problem with cheap fabric, Walmart etc.

Cracked me up, Jan!!!!

My fabric was from the quilt shop, a batik. I'll sure try the vinegar.

ckcowl 07-30-2011 10:32 AM

usually for those stubborn wrinkles-- i prewash the fabric-then press it while still damp.
starch usually takes care of it too.

MadQuilter 07-30-2011 10:34 AM

rewash, toss in the dryer but take it out before it's completely dry, then iron with sizing or starch. If that doesn't work - incorporate the wrinkles.

Can you take it to a drycleaner to have it pressed? they have those enormous mangle presses.

Polliwog 07-30-2011 10:35 AM

Did you wash a piece longer than 3 yards? I usually subcut long yardages before washing and then use the handwash cycle for washing and delicate for drying. If I don't have a project idea ready-to-go, I will usually leave the long yardage unwashed - with a little reminder to wash later pinned on.

Downey makes a great product called Wrinkle Release. Look for it near the spray starch, etc

JulieR 07-30-2011 04:23 PM

Spray with water until damp, then fold and place in a plastic bag. Let sit for an hour so the moisture will distribute itself evenly; if you won't be able to get to it in an hour put the bag in the freezer and it'll keep.

Remove from the bag when you're ready and press with spray starch if desired.

Nolee 07-30-2011 04:30 PM

I haven't washed it yet; maybe that is the "wrinkle" in this problem. I'll wash it, leave it damp and see what happens when I iron it.

Nolee 07-30-2011 04:31 PM

Ohhhhhhhhhh, I'll use that wrinkle remover for future problems. Thank you!!

SnowQuilt 07-30-2011 05:28 PM

I had the same problem with a baby quilt I'm making and used spray starch. It worked great. :)

The freezer method that JulieR mentioned works for cross stitch linen so I would think it would work for cotton. Dampen the fabric, place in a plastic bag, and place in the freezer. When you remove it from the freezer, iron.

If you try this, let us know if it works. :-)

ironing the fabric while it is still damp with a little spray starch or sizing seems to help a lot

janmwalker 07-31-2011 04:10 AM

I also use Magic sizing and if necessary you can use a spray bottle with a little vinegar. The smell will dissipate.

dunster 07-31-2011 04:24 AM

Batiks are notorious for bleeding, so it would be best to wash it before using.

jan22 07-31-2011 05:55 AM

I've used Mary Ellen's Best Press with fantastic results. Some of my fabric has been folded for a very longtime and all the wrinkles come out with the Best press. Well worth the costs.

Dayken 07-31-2011 07:04 AM

One thing that has really helped me is my mangle. When I iron it while still a little damp and roll it through the mangle it really comes out beautiful.

joyce888 07-31-2011 07:05 AM

I hear you. I've had the same problem and have even told the salesperson I did not want the wrinkled part in my yardage. Some oblige, some won't.

Cookie64 07-31-2011 07:10 AM

1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water, works every time.

When you wash it, don't dry it (what my mother used to call it) bone dry. It's not really wet but not dry either. And spray starch always helps.

Rann 07-31-2011 08:06 AM

What is a mangle? You lost me on that one.

hoppa 07-31-2011 08:07 AM

I use a wrinkle remover but will have to yry the vinegar and water solution too.

quilter68 07-31-2011 08:10 AM

A mangle irons large material like sheets and bedding. Who does that anymore?

I do this as well. It has always worked for me.

My mother used to have one when I was growing up but have not seen one in years and years and years..... might be telling my age now.

Where can you purchase one now? Never thought about using one for quilting fabrics.

You must be young!!! A mangle is a type of ironing roll about 3' long. It has roll of padded fabric and you bring a cover down over it that forms to the roll. I remember my girlfriend's mother having one in her kitchen when she ironed clothes. Look it up on Google and see if they have a picture of one. It was so neat!! That was about 1956 for me.

Nolee 07-31-2011 08:37 AM

I googled "picture of mangle" and the first picture is the one I remember.

If a fabric wrinkles that much, I won't use it in a quilt. They'll probably never come out & I may not want that look in the finished piece.

ShirlinAZ 07-31-2011 08:55 AM

I find that a good misting with a spray bottle, let set a few seconds, then iron will take out most wrinkles. Occasionally there is a stubborn spot or two after the first treatment, so I repeat on those spots.
