Yard sale find

I found this at yard sale . I think it is called chicken scratch. How do I quilt it? Does it have to be hand quilted. It also has the batting stitched in so do I add another batting? It must be a throw because it is square. Can I rip out one side and add to bottom and make a twin quilt? So many questions and so little time. lol

You can definitely take out one side and add to the bottom. I would do this a block at a time.

I don't understand how the batting is. Is there a backing fabric? Was the chicken scratch done through the top fabric and the batting?

Edit: Oh, I just saw your other post and photo of the back. It does look as if the chicken scratch was done through batting. I think what I would do, after changing the block arrangement, is simply add a backing fabric and hand or machine sew over all the block seam lines. The chicken scratch is already enough "quilting" to hold the batting together to the top fabric. I would just be very careful when washing and drying the quilt, and would also be sure the backing fabric is pre-shrunk before layering.

Lovely old quilt!

I love "chicken scratch" I have used it on childrens dresses and did make one quilt with it. Did white hearts on red gingham and then hand quilted each block around the hearts and along the stitch lines. Was just thinking about doing some blocks with it the other day...funny that it came up here now....

What a great find! My mother did one with strawberries on red and white check for my niece years ago. So sweet!

Chicken scratch is a type of embroidery done on gingham material.

Your quilt is pretty. I love chicken scratch. I remember when everyone was doing it. We could'nt get enough of it. Looked everywhere for different patterns.
