Yardage??

I saw a post from Pattypurple a few days ago. I believe she was in a new sewing area??
Anyway she made the statement that she had to move 500 yds of her fabric. Does everyone know how much yardage they have??? Boy, I have NO idea????? lol lol I still have a lg bag full that I bought @ a closing and haven't even put it away!! I have a quilt on my table and no room to organize the new material...
Really do you all honestly know????????????? Should I be doing this??????

thimblebug6000 08-06-2015 04:22 PM

Not happening at my house :D Just returned from a 4 week holiday and added another huge pile of fabrics I had purchased as I collected Row by Row patterns! I enjoy spending time in quilt shops and as long as I can I will support them so that they don't disappear :o That's the excuse I'm giving....

About a year ago I carefully folded fabric to fit into a "small" Home Depot moving box.

The box was 12x16x12 inches -
I got 115 yards of fabric in it.
The fabric weighed 32 pounds, 8 ounces.

(The empty box weighed 14.5 ounces.)

On this particular batch of fabric - Fabric Traditions - it was 3.5 yards of fabric per pound. (A yard of this fabric weighed approximately 4.5 ounces.)

Me, too. Especially moving internationally. The logistics are scaring me to death.

bearisgray 08-06-2015 07:26 PM

PS - I have no idea how much fabric I actually do have!

BETTY62 08-06-2015 09:30 PM

I do not know. I do not want to know. But, no matter how much you have, it's never enough.

notmorecraft 08-06-2015 09:33 PM

Not enough, my stash fits in 1 slim drawer unit I try and stock up anytime I visit US, as fabric 2-3 times the price a yard in UK, but then I use it all, so stash very small unfortunately, I could kill to have the same stash as some of you gals xx

tessagin 08-07-2015 02:48 AM

I have about 300. Not including what isn't on comic boards. Some comic boards have 3-4 yards and that's too much on a board. Then we have the scraps. Ughhh!!!

Ain't that the truth:)

ManiacQuilter2 08-07-2015 03:57 AM

I moved 2 years ago and I had 300 bolts which normally I kept two yards or more on a bolt.

Onebyone 08-07-2015 03:59 AM

We plan on moving next year and I won't be counting yards as I pack my fabric. I don't care about how many yards I have. I do plan on donating a lot of it before the move.

luvstoquilt 08-07-2015 05:10 AM

I know I have a lot more than I need but I will buy more if I get in a quilt shop.

dunster 08-07-2015 05:37 AM

I don't want to know how much I have, and I don't want to know how much I spent. I just want to enjoy using it, and I hope I can avoid buying more. I'd love to have empty shelves in the quilt room, but that isn't likely to happen.

christi54 08-07-2015 07:51 AM

I have been packing my sewing room up for a move to texas, so far I have filled the spare bedroom with floor to ceiling with boxes that are filled with fabric. At last count had over 75 boxes and that is only half of my stash packed. I really did not know how much i had collected over the last few years. It did not look like it was that much fabric when it was lined up on my bookcases. Maybe when I get to texas when I unpack I will measure it all just to see how many yards I truly do have. Christi

LyndaOH 08-07-2015 07:51 AM

We are just finishing up a remodel which included new flooring, paint and a design wall in my quilt cave. I had to move everything out of the room to get it done. It's now been packed up for about 3 months. (I miss my stuff!) Next weekend I'll be able to unpack it.

I had clearly overbought as my enthusiasm for quilting grew. I tried to edit out fabric when I was packing up and I did a pretty good job, but I'm going to do some more editing when I put everything back. I'm determined to never again have the mess I had before I packed up.

As for how much there is - I'm going to be counting the yards as I put it back because with the renovation we have to increase our homeowner's insurance and I'd like a somewhat accurate account of the replacement value of everything in the room. I think it's going to be a shocker!

Christi - I have to laugh because some of my stuff ended up at your house! I had no idea you were more "over stocked" than I am! Lynda

Lori S 08-07-2015 08:23 AM

I don't want to make that kind of calculation.... Ignorance is bliss! And I have an abundance of bliss!

crafty pat 08-07-2015 09:44 AM

I have no idea and have way to much to worry about. I could get several quilts made before I could measure it all.

bearisgray 08-07-2015 10:17 AM

You could get a postal scale and weigh several different measured lengths of fabrics to get an "average" of what a yard weighs and just weigh the fabric to get a fairly close guesstimate.

There is a difference in weight per yard -

caspharm 08-07-2015 12:46 PM

Don't know how many, but have more than 12 - 12 gallon totes full of fabric.

luv-e 08-07-2015 01:02 PM

Ladies, you have made me giggle, alot and like Lori S... I too am in a blissfully state...LOL LOL

Material Witness 08-07-2015 01:10 PM

Not happening at my house, either. How many sewing hours would I have to give up to count it? Not trading those hours in.

needles3thread 08-07-2015 01:10 PM

If you need to get rid of some, I could use some yardage, jelly rolls, fat quarters & charm squares. any kind as long
as it is cotton for quilts.

quiltsRfun 08-07-2015 01:45 PM

I'd be afraid of the results if I tried to calculate the yardage. In this case I'm in favor of the "What you don't know won't hurt you" theory.

Maggie Mendes 08-08-2015 03:53 AM

I don't know how much fabric I have but I can put all in one small box. I started sewing last year, and here in Portugal the Fabric are very expensive ( 15€/ yard) Maybe when I move to Canada it will be easier :)

LITTLEOLDME 08-08-2015 05:57 AM

Have no idea, have 28 rubber made tubes full that I was given last year, made 9 quilts (queen size) out of them .

annette1952 08-08-2015 06:58 AM

I don't know how much fabric I have but it makes me happy & I'm always happy to buy more when I can. All of you know it is in our blood & we need our fabric! It is a part of our life. Isn't it fun???

Nanoo 08-08-2015 07:27 AM

I collected fabric for 15 years while I was working because I was going to use it "someday." I am 69 years old, and now I realize that if I live to be 130, I will never use all of my fabric. Now I have just a few chosen people that I allow to come into my quilting room and select fabrics. The price is always the same--$0.00. I cannot make myself just strip the shelves all at once.

ghostrider 08-08-2015 07:53 AM

I know roughly how may yards I have, but it doesn't matter at all to me. No way am I even considering purging any of it. It makes my life more enjoyable, more convenient, more efficient, and more productive to have what I need already on hand in the here and now. That I won't use it up in my (statistically expected) lifetime is totally irrelevant.

Carol34446 08-08-2015 07:53 AM

Do not want to know, but keep telling myself "DO N OT BUY ANY MORE" as I have no place to store it.

Mitch's mom 08-08-2015 08:08 AM

Do you think moving companies charge an up charge when they have to move a quilter's home? I don't know what would be worse for a moving company worker; a book collector or a quilter.

trolleystation 08-08-2015 08:12 AM

It gives me a headache to think about it.................................

Tink's Mom 08-08-2015 08:15 AM

I don't know how much I have...don't want to know. Besides....it won't be my problem to move it...that will be the problem for my kids.

MargeD 08-08-2015 01:02 PM

I have no idea how many yards of fabric I have, but I'm afraid to even attempt to figure it out. I don't even want to count the totes, however, I'm sure my DH has and he wants me to get rid of most of it, which is not happening. I purged when we moved from a 3 bedroom home to a 2 bedroom apt. where I have a small sewing "area" in my bedroom and probably gave away nearly half of my stash, which was extremely traumatic for me. I inherited my sister's fabric when she passed away suddenly at 72, and I hadn't even begun to sort through it when we had to start packing for the move to MA, after 33 years in our home in NH, where we brought home our daughter when she was barely 4 weeks old and our son was 2 1/2. Granted, our son, his wife Jen and our DGD Zoe live just 3 miles from us now, we don't get to see them as much as we would like, and Zoe is now 5 years old and starting Kindergarten in Sept. Good luck Pattypurple with your move.

Becky's Crafts 08-08-2015 02:26 PM

Most of my fabric is scraps or fat quarters. I have very little yardage, although I've started gathering some at special sales and closings lately. My husband thinks I should get 5 yd pieces, but I get 3 maximum unless I'm buying it for a project/quilt backing. I've been given most of it by a friend, but I keep using it until there's nothing left. That is easier said than done, but it's going down!! Then I buy more & fill the tubs up again! LOL! I have no idea how many yards I have nor do I really care. I enjoy it & I use it. That's all that matters to me... :-)

maryellen2u 08-08-2015 05:23 PM

I don't know how much fabric I have but it seems I am always wanting more! It is also a problem because I think< "How am I going to get all these planned projects done?" Maybe I should mail them off to Scotland! We could arrange a swap. I send the fabric and you send me back a completed quilt!
