Yin Yang Quilting Block

2 Attachment(s)
Ok, my daughter is a bit of a hippy. She loves peace signs and tie dye.

I thought it would be fun to make her a quilt made out of different 6" blocks representing peace and balance.

Little did I know that it's hard to find free quilting patterns for that type of thing.

So I broke down and made my own.

I made this yin yang design by tracing some free clip art and creating an applique.

It turned out pretty well don't you think?

I like the feel of the black and white on top of the blue. It creates that feel of earth and ocean. I didn't originally intend to do that, but it works.

I'm looking forward to finishing the quilt with blocks of different appliques. I can't wait to see her face when she gets it.

This is going to be a 3 block by 3 block (total of 9 blocks) wall hanging for her room.

The only thing I'm having a bit of trouble with is what should the other blocks be? I'm already doing one with a piece sign, but I need at least 7 more blocks to finish it out. I don't really want to repeat a design.

Can anyone help me with more ideas? I want to keep with the theme.

Thanks everyone. Your help is greatly appreciated! :)

Great appliqué! I came across a double happiness quilt block that you might consider.

Flower power?
beads?
sandals?
fringes? (SunBonnet Sue wearing a fringed vest and bell bottoms!?)
VW bus?
Beetles? (Lady bugs?!)

I love your color choices! Very nice!

Here are a few ideas I found:
http://quiltinspiration.blogspot.com...1_archive.html scroll down to THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2012 - Peace on Earth

http://www.nydailynews.com/life-styl....950858?pgno=1 – you could do each child in a different tie-dye shirt!

http://nonniequiltingdreams.wordpres...ng-with-color/ - balance of color

http://nonniequiltingdreams.wordpres...ythm-homework/

http://mariaacevedo.com/sketches/sun-and-moon/ - would make a nice compliment to your Yin-Yang

I agree with Nanny -- show us your blocks as you go! Good Luck!

When scrolling down to the peace on earth cherisews' first idea, I noticed a butterfly quilt on the side. You know "butterflies are free" -- so I suggest a butterfly block. Kathy

You can google for kanji (Chinese/Japanese writing) symbols. I found the one for peace. http://www.clker.com/clipart-2813.html

I love the one with the cranes on December 26, 2012. I suggest starching the heck out of a piece of fabric and actually doing an origami crane to make a dimensional block. My mom always told me that the cranes would keep the bad spirits away. As she was Japanese, I always believed her and have one sitting on my desk at work. LOL

A scale, maybe weighing somethind

starshine 07-19-2013 06:10 AM

How about a Dove,
Olive branches -maybe in a circle like the wreath of the original Olympics,
two fingers making a v from the WWII symbol that was later adopted by the hippies.
the words peace and balance
tight rope walker (for balance)
Heart
Daisies
or a wreath of daisies entertwined with olive leaves/branches

starshine 07-19-2013 06:23 AM

did you want some pieced blocks as well as applique?

Bright Hope
Money wrench or snails trails would also compliment the ying yang. (And you don't have peace when there is a monkey wrench in your plans.)
Friendship star
House
Tree of Life
Trip around the world

KLO 07-19-2013 03:57 PM

Jan in VA mentioned a VW or VW bus and I think either or both of those is a great idea. Maybe put a flower design on the door or just use big flower fabric? I know there are quilt patterns out there for both those vehicles so maybe you even could look at them and design your own.

Well, they turn out to be easy to find so here you go:

Here's the bus one:

And here is the car:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/GROOVY-NEW-P...item5d41a24017

This should be a fun quilt to make!

sahm4605 07-19-2013 05:39 PM

maybe a great big tree in the middle of the quilt blocks. sort of like a great big tree of life. I would also suggest batiks. they seems that they are something hippie ish. at least to me. I would go with maybe more idea than steriotype. I knew a few types that would be called a hippie but they wouldn't be pleased to be styreo typed as the "hippie" most think of. go with her person ality and things she would have in her home.

I will! I've got excellent ideas going on now. I especially like the sun/moon idea and flower power.

Thank you cherisews and Jan.

I love the Tree of Life idea. I'm thinking I might include the green man in that.

My daughter is pretty proud to be called a hippy. We embrace it at the same time as her Marine grandfather.

I really like the tree of life idea and I definitely think that batiks should be used throughout. They have more of that tie dye feel to them. ;)

I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful ideas. I already have a block made of this cool butterfly. I'll try to get a picture of it up soon and put it in this thread.

carolynjo 07-20-2013 05:47 AM

I also thought of snail trails because of the circular pattern similar to Yin and Yang.

fangman 07-20-2013 07:56 AM

I can't wait to see all the blocks.

Here's the butterfly block that I'm going to add to the quilt.

I was also thinking of adding this celtic knot block to it too. It kind of adds the infinity symbol to it. But I'm not sure if it would work well.

LUANNH 07-20-2013 09:15 AM

Love your ying yang. How about a pair of bellbottoms with a wide belt.

MargeD 07-20-2013 09:36 AM

You did indeed come up with a good pattern for a yin yang block. It was always a favorite of my daughter and her best friend, but I didn't make any quilts with that pattern. Something to think about.

Quilts&Angie 07-20-2013 11:24 AM

Don't forget that ever popular Smiley Face!

sahm4605 07-20-2013 11:55 AM

why not a double infinity symbol? it would look great too. Love the butterfly also.

kareno 07-20-2013 11:59 AM

Those are some great ideas. Makes me want to do one also!! Can't wait to see the finished one

seasaw2mch 07-20-2013 09:43 PM

don't forget the girls with the daisy flower chains in their hair, you could do one showing the back of their head with the daisies showing

Love you color of the yin-yan, perfect!

silhouette ideas

This is one I made for a nieces HS grad. I asked her 'what' she liked and then searched for silhouette that would represent her requests. search clip art, silhouette, color book pattern, applique pattern etc.... there are a lot of good images -out there- hope you find what you are looking for--cw
Rachel loves books, lillys, hearts, biking, drama, etc...

helenhiwater 07-21-2013 07:19 AM

What about one of those tantric meditation mazes? Can't remember what they are called, exactly.

Do you mean the Labryinth path?

Sewnoma 07-21-2013 11:58 AM

I am "hippy spawn" -both of my parents are tie-dyed hippies; here's what come to my mind (that hasn't already been mentioned):

"Om" symbol (https://www.google.com/search?q=om+s...w=1237&bih=802)

Lotus flowers

Mandalas of all kinds

Excellent inspiration! They would look very pretty too! Think of all the possibilities in fabric.

You guys are awesome! These are such excellent ideas it's hard to know where to start. Today I'm going to work on a couple of peace signs (the typical one and the two finger hand). After that, I'm going to have to reread all the comments. There are excellent ideas all throughout. I'll keep posting pictures as they turn out. Thank you everyone! Keep those ideas coming. I might have to make a second quilt for the next child in line. ;)

Here are the two designs I made and fleshed out yesterday for this quilt.

I'm thinking of making a checkerboard pattern alternating between background fabrics in black and white.

I'll keep you posted on the next ones as they get done. ;)

cherisews 07-25-2013 02:52 AM

Very cool blocks Rebecca!! Love your colors. Can't wait to see what you come up with next!!

Today I'm going to make a tribal tree of life. I'll post a picture of it as soon as it's complete.

I finally completed the tribal tree of life block. I chose the tribal version because my daughter likes tattoo artwork. This particular one also stands out to me because I can see the green man in it too.

Now I got most of the blocks done. Just a few more to go before I can assemble the quilt top.

How do you think this turned out? Any additional ideas?
