This comes as sort of a follow up to a thread yesterday. I wasn't too keen on posting it on the open board as I do NOT wish to come across as trying to be a "know it all". I just hate seeing people send their machine to the shop for two weeks, or totally give up on it.

There are two manuals for sewing machines, one is an Operator's Manual, which comes with the machine. The Operator's manual is just that, how to sew with the machine.

The other manual is a REPAIR Manual. That is the one that is a national secret. (Hey, repairmen have to earn a living too!) This manual tells you how to FIX the machine. You can Google to find a Repair Manual for your specific machine. Usually available for around $10-12. Voila, there's your magic.

This info DOES come with a disclosure. I am NOT an expert on sewing machines. (Or anything else except chocolate.) My husband has ALWAYS repaired my machines using this method. My BIL does the same. My machines have NEVER been in the shop for repairs and I've been sewing, well, for a hundred years. Further, we've had no issues with my computerized machines, so the above information has NOTHING to do with the computerized machines.

That's how my husband fixes our cars ;-)

I need a new husband LOL

Ditto here too!! But on the other hand my DH does help pay for my fabric addiction and takes me on some fabulous cruises, at least one every year. We've even got the next three cruises booked, whoohoo!!!

Additional thought to ponder.

Have you ever noticed that when you go to your doctor, he talks to you in the exam room, leaves, comes back and treats you? Where do you think HE'S going? Yep, those dang Repair Manuals come in all forms!

Joyce 07-24-2010 06:57 AM

2k,
I absolutely love your response!

Sharon321 07-24-2010 09:13 AM

EVery women needs multiple husbands:
1) The man who makes lots of money.
2) The man with good "bedroom" skills.
3) The man who can fix anything.
4) The man who likes to travel and shop.

Preferrably all at the same time but that would wear me out. Guess I will stick with what I have.

whew! Thank goodness I have them all in 1. It would be hard shopping for 4 husbands.

I'm going to check this out- I have a few machines that I wouldn't mind experimenting on with the tension.

Thanks for the info!
Barb

Well I guess I cover all of those bases so I am good!!

But you forgot to add:

Takes the time to listen to your thoughts and problems
Understanding/considerate of your feelings
Makes time to share in your interest and hobbies
And puts YOU and FAMILY first before him.

love it!

Me thinks we need to clone Billy.

I'm a great, nice single woman who would like a husband with any of the 4 qualities listed. Any one know of a good single man? LOL. It's gets tiring do it all yourself if you know what I mean.

Give your "honey's" an extra hug tonite for us "single" gals that don't have someone to share their life with.

Blessing to you all

jeanau 07-24-2010 07:34 PM

How right you are!!

Well your in luck. My brother lives in the Seattle area and has all those qualities. (well I'm not sure about #2 though)
And he's single. He's 51 and I'm thankful he's my brother.
I wish I could have cloned him for a husband.
Thanks 2K for the info. I'm going to look mine up.

AND COOKS!

BTW, DH and I have searched on line for a repair manual for my Pfaff machine. Any ideas? In English (not German), please! :)

BellaBoo 07-24-2010 08:21 PM

Some repairs interest my DH but I know my sewing machine would not be one of interest. I like finding the solution for myself. I have repaired all my machines at one time or another. I don't mind taking one apart at all, computer or mechanical. I figure if I can read I can learn.

DebraK 07-24-2010 08:46 PM

I understand what you are saying, but I am happy not to have to work on the cars any more, and that I have a machine and partner that I'm not needing any work on. Hubs wants to buy me an extra machine. I'm the one who says wait till we find what we want. There is a plan ;-)

wvdek 07-24-2010 09:01 PM

Well I guess I truly lucked out with all the qualities in a husband except maybe #1, too. He even took me dancing tonight. Eeeehaw! Eat your hearts out ladies and yes, I will gladly give him an extra hug.

Ybridgegal 07-25-2010 04:25 AM

Whoa....I just need a husband.

I know I can sure unset the timing on my machine with very little problem! And I love the multiple husband reasons. Who could be lucky enough to have a husband that could do even 50% of the list?

The cooking sealed it for me. (Actually a DH who was occasionally home would be a bonus in itself!) Let's get scientific and see about cloning Billy. What do you think, Billy? Willing to donate a little DNA in a good cause? LOL
And MJ I love the wooden quilts. What a great idea.

quiltlin 07-26-2010 05:41 AM

My DH is handy too and does all of my repairs and cleans my machines. The only time it had to go to the shop was about a year ago when I broke a belt on it that none of the shops said I could have broken and they wouldn't sell me one so we had to take it in. We have a set of mini vacuum attachments and he uses those as well as oil where it's needed. He did get a manual for my machine but hasn't had to use it yet.

I might be on the market after I take this trip the month of September if you go to my PDA and look at page 23 you will see what I am talking about.

Hmmmm I guess we could hold a raffle or auction....

weslynn 07-26-2010 07:01 AM

Ditto for me!! Am looking with no success. When they see my "sewing"room, they turn and run. Of course, it has spilled into my living room too!!

Marlys 07-26-2010 07:26 AM

Let's see - my DH doesn't really fit much in any of those categories except he does cook (but he doesn't clean up afterwards). But you know what - I love him anyway!!!

Yuppers.. Good ole Chilton's books.

BUT my Hubby can't seem to change the oil in my Hummer so it has to go to the shop.. he tried once, and I heard a lot of words he doesn't usually say. LOL

nwm50 07-26-2010 10:52 AM

and don't forget he absolutely has to know how to cook!!!

Patched 07-26-2010 05:40 PM

My sewing repair man comes to my house. I've probably used him 15 plus years and he usually has my machine(sewing, embroidery, serger and long arm) fixed in 30 minutes or less. Only one time did he have to take my machine and then just for overnight. Also very reasonable on price, never paid more than $60.00

nwm50 07-26-2010 05:44 PM

thanks for the links...got it. Listed most of my favorite shows plus Andy Griffith, Dark Shadows, any of Steve McQueen shows, etc, etc, etc....

Oh oh, bad timing for this advice. I took my mach. to the mach. hospital today. I'm in no frame of mind to deal with a manual right now. I just want somebody to make it right.

Wish I had somebody to fix the leaking pipes under my sink in the upstairs bathrm. I've been to Home Depot twice to get the right trap & now the darn thing is wider than my pipes. Now I need a pipe doctor.
I don't know how I'm going to live without my mach. for a wk. or so.

Annz 07-26-2010 06:58 PM

I need a husband who would do repairs. Mine does not have an interest in anything that involves tools etc I usually do all the repairs and so on in the house. I also own all the tools in our house and I have a lot of tools.
