I went from one corner of the quilt to the other while quilting a pattern with no bobbin thread. I left everything right there, turned off the machine and went to bed. Had a good laugh about it the next day, but not that night!

Booo Bad time. Those things always seem to happen in the evening, so I try very hard to do my cutting in the morning when I am fresh, and my mind more alert

MargeD 09-19-2013 10:06 AM

Oh honey, I've been there, done that so many times I've lost count. I once cut strips for a quilt, then discovered that they were not large enough and I had to cut more. I usually make these stupid mistakes when I'm tired, so now I try (notice I said TRY) to quit when I'm tired - tomorrow is another day and a better quilt.

sewmary 09-19-2013 10:21 AM

Haven't laughed this hard in a long time! Thanks Folks.

You flip the edges back to trim the 1/4 inch paper piecing flying geese and inadverently cut their little wings right off. I turned out the lights and went upstairs to bed.

irenecarter 09-19-2013 11:23 AM

I've done this exact thing. It was on a pattern that had to have pieces taken from 4 different piles. they all landed on the floor in a mess. I also went down one side of a binding with no thread in the bobbin.

Been there, in fact, the other day I was cutting up 9 patches for an EB pattern and instead of cutting a straight line (even though I had a cutting edge) I went off to the left into the block. Luckily, it turns out I didn't need that block, so it will go into the scrap bag.

In another case, it took me 5 tries to finish sewing the binding ends on a small quilt. Every time I thought I had it, it turned out I had sewn it either backwards (facing the wrong direction), hadn't measured the length correctly (too long, then too short), or twisted. It took me 3 days of trying, I would try it twice each time and then decide I better find something else to do rather than get more frustrated. I had another binding that it took 2 tries. For some reason I was having trouble finishing bindings that week. :) It did get better.

 We all must be related!!! LOL........I haven't done all these but enough of them to be counted in the number.....so glad you all now make me feel 'normal'......... LOL

I was quilting a queen size quilt on my first machine that I ever owned. It was a Janome that was brand new $200. I was at quilting retreat. I was burning up my sewing machine from high speed quilting. You could smell it. Pedal to the metal was still going very slow. I just threw everything down, turned off my machine, got up, said "good night", and went to bed. The next morning my machine was fine and I started again. Everyone got a good laugh out of it. And over 10 years later, it is still brought up. Bought a new machine shortly after. I just quilted a king size on my machine with no problems. I am ready for a new though with a deeper throat since I tend to make larger quilts, it seems.

This is great, hearing everyone has made the same boo boos I have......thank you! I did something worse, after ripping, sewing, ripping and sewing again I decided I was too tired to go on so I went to bed and had a nightmare about sewing on the binding wrong, redoing it and sewing it on wrong again! Now how do you escape that?

Been there, done that! This gave me hope that I'm not the only one! ROTFL!!!

When you start calling your sewing machine bad names.

DonnaPBradshaw 09-19-2013 06:13 PM

I'm sorry that you have had a bad day trying to sew! Some days are just not suited for sewing! The trick is knowing what day that might be before you start to sew!

meanmom 09-20-2013 03:24 AM

WHen you are making a DP9 patch and sew almost every square together sideways. Then you rip them and re- sew them the wrong way again. Time for a glass of wine, some dark chocolate and then bed.

WTxRed 09-20-2013 03:27 AM

...When you end up having to cut more pieces because you suddenly don't have enough to finish piecing the block you're working on - only to get it constructed and see you 'accidentally' reversed all the colors ... lol. Turn out the lights, the party's over! Came back the next morning and ripped and fixed :)

Grannyh67 09-20-2013 03:42 AM

LOL, been there done that

Sitting here early in the morning reading these...........so funny.....but when I read this one I just bust out laughing.... surprised I didn't wake up the DH. I've done most of these too, but not this one......yet!

BillieJean 09-20-2013 04:11 AM

Done it too...

Corby013 09-20-2013 04:22 AM

ooohhhh, been there done that - only it was a lot more than 8":(

Mimmis57 09-20-2013 04:46 AM

I think I've done most of these too! I remember piecing rows of a quilt together and couldn't find 1 row! I looked and looked and couldn't find it. Luckily I had enough fabric to make 1 more row but knew I didn't like it as much as the original but what could I do? I put the top together with the new row still thinking I liked the orig better but I have to live with the adjustment. I turned around in my chair and guess what was hanging right behind me? The original row! I swear there are quilting gremlins that just like to mess with us!

weezie 09-20-2013 05:05 AM

Although I've not yet sewn my clothes to my quilt, I have done many, many of the things mentioned in this thread. I'm particularly good with the backwards and/or upside down thing. They were not funny at the time, but I have laughed all the way through this thread.

Emma S 09-20-2013 05:45 AM

Time to quit when you cut through the binding on the quilt that is finally almost done. Still havn't got up the courage to go into my sewing room and survey the damage. Yes, happened just last night. Cringe!

kloe49 09-20-2013 07:48 AM

What a great way to start a Friday morning at work. Laughed out loud on several and since I have only been quilting for a few months, I am sure these will be mistakes I will make as well. Hopefully not sewing my pants to my quilt, but probably could happen.

taryn72 09-20-2013 09:11 AM

add me to "Been there done that"

Bluebell 09-20-2013 10:09 AM

Or, you joined the block with the last piece of your favourite fabric to another block, but sewed a wobbly seam, so you got the seam ripper out and cut a huge hole in the fabric. OMG.

only 8" ? That's not really bad, not at all--it's that long, long seam that is frustrating when you realize you ran out LONG ago.

LesterLou202 09-20-2013 01:08 PM

Thank you all, you have made my day! One does get to the point where they believe they can never get things right. It is so nice to know that others have been there too!

meanmom 09-20-2013 01:49 PM

I have done all of these and then some. As some said they weren't funny at the time but they are now. The only reason I haven't sewn a quilt to my pants is I am allergic to hand sewing. I try to avoid it at all costs. But if I did hand sew, I am sure I would manage that one too. Thanks for all the laughs. It has been a long week.

I can laugh with you on this one. I sometimes wonder what on earth was I thinking (or not thinking)

These things seem to always happen at the most inconvience time., must be the devil at work while our angel is on break. I, too have had my share of them. Hope you have a better day tomorrow. Hope all my quilting friends have a blessed and wonderful weekend.

moonrise 09-20-2013 04:19 PM

Just a couple of days ago, I was working on a Halloween tablerunner. It was made with three 12-1/2" squares, and the ends were to be triangles so it would be pointy. I'd just bought some $12.99/yard fabric specifically for this table runner, and had bought exactly enough. (I usually don't spend that much if I can help it ... I wait for a sale or a coupon!)

Anyway, I got the three squares sewn together, reached for the triangle end pieces, and they were GONE. I turned this room upside down trying to find them. They're just GONE.

Since that's all of the fabric I had, I couldn't re-cut them, and I didn't have transportation back to the store. I had to finish my tablerunner differently than planned. Grrr!

In the end, it turned out relatively okay, but it sure was frustrating.

And I STILL haven't found those triangle pieces! I figured they'd turn up as soon as the tablerunner was finished, but apparently they sprouted legs and walked right out the door. ;)

Eight inches?!!! How about the whole side??!:D

cwessel47 09-20-2013 04:47 PM

I quilt in my lap and have sewn to my pants on many occasions. Not far - cause I can't turn the piece really quickly. I've cut wrong, sewed wrong, ran out of fabric - ok, well almost all of these things. The worst was when I cut ALL of the pieces I needed for a quilt and had reversed the lights and darks. Then I had to come up with an entirely new plan. Guess what ? It worked out great and stretched me to something new. Sometimes mistakes are the right thing to do. And - I feel your pain!

Only 8 inches?? I have gone 2/3 around a quilt, unpinning the binding as I went! We have all done something like that, and you are absolutely right! Time to quit and look at something else for awhile! That is when I come and sit on the Quilt Board site!! Need that positive warm, fuzzy!

When the dog tells you to please stop barking so he can sleep.

Divokittysmom 09-21-2013 11:12 AM

It's time to quit for the day when you sew through your thumb..... twice!! Yes, I really really did that!! Fortunately, it was only the very edge of my thumb first time, edge of nail second time..... My darling grandma used to say to me when it comes to sewing,... haste makes waste!! Sure does!! Lesson learned! OUCH

kaelynangelfoot 09-21-2013 11:27 AM

When you have to tear out every other piece of your block because it went in wrong. I tore out three pieces before giving up for the night and going to bed.
