When I first moved here, I felt like I was in the boonies. Fort Smith is 18 miles and I no longer have a car. Then I discovered that I could order online. I feel like I can "visit" any shop in the entire USA. I still can go to Walmart, but I have other choices as well.

Like so many others I never depended on WalMart for fabric except when there were no other options. In rural areas LQS are few and far between. It is nice to be able to pop into WM and know I could find something to fill the time when visiting my mom in rural Illinois. Did that just the other day,in fact.

We have a couple around here, some of the fabric is pretty good, some not so much.
I buy their nice stuff that I like and leave the rest. |
I really missed the Walmart fabric until a truly unique store in a nearby community stated carrying lots of fabric. She carries wonderful QS fabrics, mostly designer fabrics, that are maybe 2-3 years old. Nothing is over $4 a yard. Lucky me. For anyone living in south Alabama. The store is Glenn's in Sanford Al. on Hwy 84 between Opp and Andalusia.

Walmart stopped carrying fabric before I started needing it but it's nice to know there's one Wally-world nearby that still has it. Fabricland has better selection and prices around here and I've only been to Len's Mill once. The fabric at the LQS's is nice, but generally pricier than I want to pay if I can help it.

I was talking to the clerk in what used to be fabric dept.
She said they will carry 2 yard cuts pre packaged. I guiss Walmart didnt want to have to pay for someone to cut fabric. I buy most of my fabric online now and save alot of money. |
i won't miss them either and if i really feel the need i can drive 45 minutes to the only walmart in the area that is keeping its fabric department.

I once saw a documentary on Walmart and it showed how Walmart gets their items to sell. They go to the supplier and say "I will carry your stuff but I will only pay X dollars for it". Maybe the fabric suppliers couldn't offer the fabric at the price Walmart needed to pay. With shipping costs (because of gas prices) skyrocketing suppliers have to pass the increases on to the buyers.
I remember in the 70's when we had oil shortages it became very hard to buy double knit fabrics and if you found them they were very expensive. Just a theory! |
